I did, actually. It just does offer anything but an anecdotal example, and not a great one, at that. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

I think you misunderstood my post. If there is only a single interest, no matter what that interest might be, there can be no conflict of interests. You asked me if a single interest constituted a conflict of interests. It cannot. The shareholders' interests are placed ahead of the patients' interests in the current system in the US. If the patients truly had autonomy, they could get whatever treatment they desired, without interference from insurance companies, or even their doctors' better judgement. That certainly is not the situation in the US. Patients do not have autonomy, and there exists conflicts of interest, conflicts in which the patients all too often lose. Math tutoring available. Is the DMV in Your Town/County/State Run Efficiently
jcd11235 replied to Gawain's topic in Speakers Corner
Wow.. it certainly is tragic that the Red States are run so poorly. I guess the DMV there should be turned over to faith based organizations so it can be run much better. Sorry. But when I lived in Wisconsin, it was just as bad. Try again. Hmmm I seem to remember Wisconsin as being full of GOP...like Tommy Thompson... running things.. Maybe they should just turn their government over to faith based groups too. Its the Red State thing to do... or at least a whole lot of radical righties seem to want that. This might help your memory. Sucks getting old. It be a bit more ingenuous to note Wisconsin's voting preferences from when you lived in Wisconsin. Did you live in Wisconsin in 2008? As nice as the idea may sound, a line item veto would be far too easy for the President to abuse and could upset the checks and balances between the executive branch and the legislative branch. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Not trying to be flippant, but no. It's only a single interest, so it doesn't have anything to conflict with. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Apparently, citizens of the red states vote Republican so they can feel justified in whining about how poorly run the government is. There's nothing like setting themselves up for failure. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -
I'm not selectively forgetting anything of the sort. Health insurance is, best case, an experience good, although is probably better described as a credence good. Consumers having a choice offers little to no benefit. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

I'd prefer to take my chances with the government, who may be lobbied, than with the corporations that hire the lobbyists. The lobbyists may influence decision making, but the worst case of such influence is what the corporations would decide on their own. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! So you clearly have not read WHO report. Mnealtx apparently has. Something you might keep in mind.... I have not read the report recently. It's been a few years. I knew that the term did not mean what lawrocket had claimed, which is why I specifically asked for him to clarify. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Would you be so kind, sir, since you claim to have read the study, to post a quote of the relevant text of the study that defines level responsiveness as customer/patient satisfaction? That's essentially what I thought it meant, not satisfaction of service. The study's findings w/r/t responsiveness are also consistent with anecdotal feedback I've heard from European skydivers who have received medical treatment in the US. It's the only area in which they felt America was superior to their home country's services. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

President Barack Obama will lift his predecessor's restriction on federal funding of human embryonic stem cell research on Monday and will give the National Institutes of Health four months to come up with new rules on the issue, officials said on Sunday. Obama will not lay out guidelines himself but will let the NIH decide when it is ethical and legal to pay for embryonic stem cell research, science adviser Dr. Harold Varmus said. Researchers and advocates have been invited to a White House ceremony at which Obama will make the announcement, said Melody Barnes, director of Obama's domestic policy council. He will also sign a pledge to "restore scientific integrity in governmental decision making," Barnes said. … Reuters article Thankfully, another Bush mistake will be corrected. I would rather it be the government than for-profit insurance companies or HMO's. Why? Because being for-profit causes a conflict of interests. For-profit entities operate with the owners' best interests in mind, not the customers'. A for-profit insurance company's reason for existence is to maximize income for shareholders, not to ensure patients get the best care possible. While the government may not be perfect, that conflict of interest does not exist. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Don't look now, but you're making an argument supporting universal healthcare over private, for profit care. No ... I'm not. I'm saying that I do not WANT to and MANY physicians do NOT fight the decisions by the government. In that situation, the patients will be limited in their options.... and the physicians will have to be the evil ones to tell them "no." Right, but many of the things you are fighting are instances of the government spending a dollar to make sure a dime is received undeservedly. With a well designed universal system, you don't have to say "no, because you can't afford it" nearly as often as you do now or if we had no government healthcare at all. Your concerns are highly unlikely to be addressed without socialized healthcare or, as one poster has suggested, universal coverage provided by private not for profit insurance companies (apologies to pirana for over simplifying the latter description). Yes, I deal with it by being informed and voting for elected officials who will make every attempt to correct the problems with the system, such as Obama. I vote for what is best for the nation as a whole, not just what is best or most convenient for me. One does not need to be a doctor to understand that the healthcare system is broken, or to understand why the private, for profit model is very unlikely to be successful. Math tutoring available. Correct. A good rule, and one I typically follow when walking. Or, I'll walk behind the car trying to turn. Unfortunately, it's not really practical at night, when I can't see into vehicles. I was riding on the sidewalk. I think it varies by state, or perhaps city/county. Here, in Orlando, when riding on the street, cyclists are governed by vehicle code. However, they aren't prohibited from riding on sidewalks, at least not in practice. None of three LEO's from two different jurisdictions mentioned anything about not riding on the sidewalk last night. W/r/t safety, maintaining the lowest speed differential among traffic is the best practice, so I ride my mountain bike on sidewalks (when they exist) on any streets with a speed limit over 30-35 mph. I was riding north along the sidewalk on the left side of a state highway, for which the light was green. as I entered an intersection (via crosswalk), a car that was on the cross street turned right (south) on red onto the state highway, across my path.
