  1. Thanks for the microeconomics review. I'll play along. So, at what rate does the monetary value of each hour with your family decrease from the previous hour? (If you don't feel a constant rate is sufficient, feel free to define a function.) Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  2. Perhaps in theory. And I agree that in practice they should not. However, in reality, they do it all the time. And, also in reality, if they do so and get called on it, then they better be ready to accept responsibility and face the repercussions for their actions. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 3. Do you value your wife? What would you pay her to love you? @TomAiello: Clearly, by your standards, if you have a job outside the home, your family has a finite monetary value to you. For what price would you sell them? Not at all. But my time, at an hourly rate, can be sold, by me, in order to provide other things, such as time with my family. Okay, for what price would you turn your back on your family forever, never to see or communicate with them again? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  4. It isn't what you said. It is an implication of what you said. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  5. IIRC, marketing is generally intended to increase profits. I don't mean to state the obvious, but that particular marketing strategy appears to be failing GM. I think if GM is going to survive and prosper, they need to do some of the same things Apple did when Steve Jobs took the reigns (again) in the late 90's. They cut unprofitable and redundant models from their product line, and focused on a small number of innovative core offerings, each substantially different from the others. It is a strategy that has served them well, allowing them to become one of the most profitable computer hardware companies in the industry. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 7. So, someone who works two full time jobs in order to make ends meet and to try to provide a better life for his kids than he had doesn't value his family as much as someone who doesn't have the drive to keep a job and relies on charity to provide food and clothing for his kids because he'd rather stay home and watch Springer? 10. For more than a decade the Global Climate Coalition, a group representing industries with profits tied to fossil fuels, led an aggressive lobbying and public relations campaign against the idea that emissions of heat-trapping gases could lead to global warming. “The role of greenhouse gases in climate change is not well understood,” the coalition said in a scientific “backgrounder” provided to lawmakers and journalists through the early 1990s, adding that “scientists differ” on the issue. But a document filed in a federal lawsuit demonstrates that even as the coalition worked to sway opinion, its own scientific and technical experts were advising that the science backing the role of greenhouse gases in global warming could not be refuted. “The scientific basis for the Greenhouse Effect and the potential impact of human emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO2 on climate is well established and cannot be denied,” the experts wrote in an internal report compiled for the coalition in 1995. Article It looks like even those who cried the loudest about global warming not being real knew themselves that their claims were not true. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 11. LMAO. When reality doesn't match libertarian ideology, just redefine the terms of reality! There are countries that actually have government run healthcare (many of which offer better care for lower cost than is available in the US). The US is not one of them. As an example of efficiency of private versus public in the healthcare industry, Medicare is far more efficient than the private insurance sector. Private, for profit hospitals have higher admin costs (as a percentage of costs) than non profit and public hospitals. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  12. Yeah, teachers, soldiers, firefighters, etc., they're all just "button pushers trying to make it 20 years to get their pension." Your post indicates a distorted view of government employees. That's a common problem in the private sector, whether it occurs in the public sector or not. Neither the private sector nor the public sector is inherently more efficient than the other. … Or at least be able to parrot the author's opinions. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 13. I don't have to proclaim that water boarding is torture. Law and legal precedent have already established that to be the case. Ignoring such facts is what is unproductive. Convincing, well cited arguments have been given over and over and over again in multiple threads on the topic. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  14. That's really the issue under debate, isn't it? Simply proclaiming "my view is right, despite what anyone else thinks" is fairly silly. In a nation of laws, we give credence to law and legal precedent, even when it's not convenient. In this case, that precedent clearly shows water boarding to be torture. Again, There are none so blind as those who will not see. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  15. If one supports water boarding, they support torture, plain and simple. It is not legally ambiguous, despite what those blowhards Cheney, Yoo, et al. want to claim. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  16. Why should it? Subjective articles are rarely considered newsworthy, especially when their subjects are historical, rather than current events. It's no coincidence that the term news contains the word new. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  17. Most people in SC seem to be satisfied with the efficiency of their local DMV. Personally, it's been a few years since I've had to wait unnecessarily at the DMV. Usually I'm in and out pretty quickly, in the event I can't take care of things online. I've got no complaints with my local Post Office (or USPS in general) either. I wish every private organization I deal with worked as efficiently as those two government agencies, but the fact of the matter is that they are often far less efficient. Math tutoring available. Got my D!!

Me too. And, if an FAA representative had not required me to turn in my paperwork for the D license in order to do a demo, I would still only have my A. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  20. I didn't say the borrowers were victims. I said the safeguard that had traditionally been in place was largely removed as lenders were selling off more of their mortgages. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  21. We always had the option to do so at our permanent duty station at Schofield Barracks. A few people did, but I never saw the point. One guy in our unit set the post record (at the time) for the most pushups in there. Of course the concentration of the CS gas was much lower than it was in the gas chamber in basic training. 22. Considering the minimum payment for many credit cards, they are not beyond typical students' means to make the payments. It may not be wise to take out the credit, but it is typically within their means. Also, credit cards generally have much higher interest rates than mortgages because the the issuing banks expect a higher rate of default, but still want to ensure a profit on their investment with that higher default rate. That's what those unwise borrowers seem to think too. But somehow, between paying for rent, food, utilities, car payments, gas for the car, ENTERTAINMENT (of various sorts), and whatever other stuff comes up, credit cards and debt seem to start here for a lot of folks. And I think it's been pretty clearly demonstrated that a lot of kids just aren't able to pay....or they don't pay, for one reason or another. Regardless, the money is offered. Cash advances are offered. People love getting stuff and rationalize it easily (with factoids like "being in college makes me a *good* credit risk). Welp...here we are talking about this Freddie Mac CFO shooting himself in the head. ~linz But the difference is that as banks started to more frequently roll up mortgages into CDO's, the risk of defaulting borrowers was shifted away from them. They stopped taking all of the precautions they previously took to avoid lending to borrowers that could not afford to repay the loans. Banks that were less likely to resell the mortgages have experienced lower default rates with their borrowers. They didn't offer larger loans than borrowers could afford. The traditional safeguard remained in place. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  23. I have to. It has been into SBN a number of times. But it has no problem getting in. From what I see nothing is done to help short fields. No winglets, or raked tips and there is only so much you can to with a CF6. It's just taking off light. No cargo in the belly, light on fuel. You don't need 200,000lbs when your only flying for a few hours. That right there will make a 747 hop off the ground pretty fast. A former 747 captain I worked with told us what the modification was at the time. I just don't remember what it was right now. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  25. If you're going to debate, stick to the issues. She answered his question honestly and directly. If he disagreed, he could've used the blog to articulate why and open a dialogue rather than spew insults. How did I not "stick to the issues"? Psst … I think she was implying that Hilton did not stick to the issues. Instead, he resorted to calling the contestant a "stupid bitch" in his blog. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour!
