Obama to cut $100 million in federal spending
jcd11235 replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
I suspect that I'm part of a minority of Americans who still believe that $100 million is a lot of money. It is, however, comical to watch the same people (not specific to DZ.commers) who criticize Obama for spending too much money out of one side of their face while criticizing him for calling on his Cabinet to find ways to cut administrative costs out of the other side. I'm not sure that a person can legally refuse to get out of their car when ordered by a police officer (with appropriate jurisdiction) to do so. I'd love to find out that I'm wrong, but I'm not aware of any guaranteed rights under which such a refusal is allowed. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Well said. To quote T.A. Preston, Jr.: "I was a poster child for famine when I was just a kid. Hell, I had to get out of the bathtub before I pulled the plug; I was scared to death I'd go down the drain all my life." I resemble that (Preston's) remark. Over the years, I've met many people who some might consider overweight or obese that live far healthier lifestyles than I do, including quite a few in my own family. They eat better (not to be confused with eating more) than I do, and they get as much, if not more exercise than me. There are lots of reasons people might be overweight. In my experience, most of them do not involve being lazy. I'll have to refrain from joining the holier than thou crowd just because I've never had a doctor recommend that I lose weight. If they want to search your vehicle, they are going to search your vehicle. In that position, I would make it clear that any search would be executed without my permission, but the place to fight the officers' actions is in court, not on the side of the road. There is no need to make a stop more stressful to officers than it need be (nor is doing so in anyone's best interest). One can be polite and reasonably cooperative with officers while still exercising rights guaranteed by the Constitution. The framers established a judicial branch separate from the executive branch for a reason. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Don't forget the people that fail to keep their vehicles tuned and their tires properly inflated. I would expect such inactions to result in more than an extra 18 gallons of fuel burned annually. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

The deniers' general failure to make their case in respected, peer refereed scientific journals is what eliminated reasonable discussion. Credible scientific research trumps op-eds when discussing topics of science. So, by your standards, I guess we can conclude your statement about reasonable discussion being eliminated was intended to be persuasive, not objective, since you used the adverb effectively. Of course, the multiple references to group masturbation are also a clear sign of an attempt at persuasion rather than an attempt to address the topic objectively. More topically, studies published in respected, peer refereed scientific journals are objective. Op-eds decrying those who acknowledge reality as doomsayers are persuasion. In other words, you're wrong, but for the right reason (except w/r/t adverb usage, where your error need not be qualified). Off topic, it's quite sad to see an attorney incorrectly attempt to correct grammar. Proved and proven are interchangeable as past participles of prove. Perhaps you should invest in one of these. For some people, the discussion is over in their minds. For some other people, the discussion is simply over their heads. Still others, particularly those who view the topic objectively, recognize that policy is open to public discussion, but the validity of scientific research is something for scientists to determine. So, by extension, you don't give a shit about the Constitution. Fair enough, that's certainly your prerogative. However, such an attitude undermines your interpretation of the law regarding torture, which includes water boarding. Well that is a stretch. But I understant to attempt to make your point valid this is what you have to do. It's not a stretch at all. It's pretty clear, actually. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! Those US agents carrying out the torture are covered under the Constitution an international treaties to which the US is a party. So, you are on record as being okay with torture. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

The article in the opening post contradicts itself with regard to immigrants illegally taking IRS tax credits. Without a cite and the original report, it's difficult to tell whether it is simply sloppy journalism or intentionally misleading propaganda. It says the tax credits were taken improperly, citing that Social Security numbers were not used. The article then goes on to explain how, under current law (more specifically, tax law that was in effect in 2007), there is no requirement to use Social Security numbers to claim the tax credit. The Internal Revenue Service allowed the tax credits even though the workers did not provide Social Security numbers on their tax returns, J. Russell George, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, said in a report. The workers instead used government-issued tax identification numbers, which are available to immigrants for certain tax-filing purposes -- regardless of their legal status -- but are not valid for employment in the U.S. The issue highlights a weakness in current law, according to the report. Federal law does not require a Social Security number to receive the $1,000 child tax credit, which is available to workers, even if they don't make enough money to pay any federal income taxes. So, it appears the only law that was broken was some of the foreigners being and working in the country illegally. The article does not offer any evidence that the foreigners cheated on their taxes. The article in the OP looks more like piece of anti-immigration propaganda. No wonder the poster didn't link to the source. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Actually, that record goes to GWB, if you care to look at polls. you need to catch up and get in the proper context Proper context? Did you even read the article? It clearly refutes your assertion, making explicit comparisons about the divided public opinions about Presidents, past and president. If that's not proper context, then you should state your assertion more clearly, because, as stated, the article proved it to be incorrect. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! The instructors of the class readily acknowledged that that it was pretty much a no win situation for troops that are put in such a position. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. It was illegal prior to Bush entering the White House. Why should one believe that changed? Part 1, Article 1 and the US Reservations of the UN Convention Against Torture: The term "torture" means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in or incidental to lawful sanctions. The US Reservations for the UN Convention Against Torture: In order to constitute torture, an act must be specifically intended to inflict severe physical or mental pain or suffering and that mental pain or suffering refers to prolonged mental harm caused by or resulting from (1) the intentional infliction or threatened infliction of severe physical pain or suffering; (2) the administration or application, or threatened administration or application, of mind altering substances or other procedures calculated to disrupt profoundly the senses or the personality; (3) the threat of imminent death; or (4) the threat that another person will imminently be subjected to death, severe physical pain or suffering, or the administration or application of mind altering substances or other procedures calculated to disrupt profoundly the senses or personality. Article 32 of the Fourth Geneva Convention any measure of such a character as to cause the physical suffering or extermination of protected persons in their hands. This prohibition applies not only to murder, torture, corporal punishments, mutilation and medical or scientific experiments not necessitated by the medical treatment of a protected person, but also to any other measures of brutality whether applied by civilian or military agents. Article 147 of the Fourth Geneva Convention: torture or inhuman treatment, including biological experiments, willfully causing great suffering or serious injury to body or health Article 7(2)(e) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court "Torture" means the intentional infliction of severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, upon a person in the custody or under the control of the accused; except that torture shall not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in or incidental to, lawful sanctions. Inter-American Convention to Prevent and Punish Torture For the purposes of this Convention, torture shall be understood to be any act intentionally performed whereby physical or mental pain or suffering is inflicted on a person for purposes of criminal investigation, as a means of intimidation, as personal punishment, as a preventive measure, as a penalty, or for any other purpose. Torture shall also be understood to be the use of methods upon a person intended to obliterate the personality of the victim or to diminish his physical or mental capacities, even if they do not cause physical pain or mental anguish. The concept of torture shall not include physical or mental pain or suffering that is inherent in or solely the consequence of lawful measures, provided that they do not include the performance of the acts or use of the methods referred to in this article. 18 United States Code Title 18, §2340(2) “torture” means an act committed by a person acting under the color of law specifically intended to inflict severe physical or mental pain or suffering (other than pain or suffering incidental to lawful sanctions) upon another person within his custody or physical control From the US Constitution: This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding. Unless you can show where the Constitution calls for torture, then water boarding, like other forms of torture, was illegal during the bush administration. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! Front line soldiers are no lawyers. It's one thing if you're talking about killing the prisoners. But the nuance between legal interrogation and unlawful torture? Just a bit past their pay grade. I think they can reasonably rely on the information they've given. If it's false, those supplying it are responsible. When we were given a class on the topic in basic training (US Army, 1993), it was made clear that it was our responsibility to understand what constituted an illegal order. If given such an order, we were legally obligated to not follow it; following orders was not a valid defense, and we could be held fully responsible for any illegal actions we might take if we did obey such an order. It was also made clear that we were legally obligated to obey all legal orders. Furthermore, if we disobeyed a legal order because we thought it was illegal, or, if we obeyed an illegal order because we believed it to be legal, we could be held legally responsible for our actions/inactions. It was neither explicitly stated nor implied that being able to tell the difference was "above our pay grade." Exactly the opposite was implied; the call was not above anyone's pay grade, from E1 to O10. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Interesting. Out of curiosity, how do you refer to those who are actually significantly left of center? If we likened the left-right political spectrum to the span of a commercial airliner (not a jump plane), Quade might be on the port side of the aisle, maybe even in a window seat, but he's still inside the fuselage. Of course it might be hard to see that for people sitting next to the starboard winglet. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

I think it would be more accurate to say he has adopted the time honored tradition of previous Presidents in their first year of office, executing the budget signed by their respective predecessors. So they were protesting because the government needs more revenue to cover its expenses? That probably didn't go over very well with the protesters carrying signs that read, "Taxed Enough Already," who appeared to be in favor of lower taxes. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! I agree that he should be called on it if he knew. Heck, as CinC, he should be called on it whether he knew about it or remained willfully ignorant. However, I think an international judicial venue is a more appropriate forum for him to receive a fair trial and found guilty or not guilty. A not guilty verdict would make any trial appear to the international community to lack credibility. In an international or foreign court, a not guilty verdict would be less likely to further damage the US' image abroad. I think Obama's reasoning with respect to CIA agents is similar to Ford's reasoning behind pardoning Nixon. We, as a nation, need to put it behind us and expend our energy moving forward. However, unlike Watergate, laws against torture (and possibly other war crimes) are not merely national laws, but international laws. Thus, the international community has a stake in seeking justice. For fuck's sake, all you had to do was ask me to turn it down. Actually, loud music in the next room was never a problem for us during basic training (i.e. the first 6-14 weeks of military service, depending on branch; I had 9 weeks, zero week plus eight weeks of BT). All while spending increased. Clinton left office after steering the nation to and along a path of fiscal responsibility. Apparently his successor did not see the value of a responsible fiscal policy. Oh wait; I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt a perfectly good rant about taxes with a dose of reality.
