VFW members duct tape flag burner to flag pole
jcd11235 replied to wayneflorida's topic in Speakers Corner
Looking at it like that would mean that the VFW effectively sold the rights to burn their flag one time, and there was no vandalism. If any ordinances were violated due to the actual fire, the VFW commander was an accomplice. No matter how you look at it, the VFW post commander showed a lack of respect for the rule of law, not maturity. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

Last time I heard, even plea agreements had to be approved by the courts. The story didn't mention the VFW post commander being a judge. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

Political reasons can be very powerful incentives. Profit is often overrated as an effective incentive to maintain efficiency in normal operations. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

And I applaud Joe Wilson for placing a higher priority on free speech and truth than on a symbol or an office but I doubt you agree with me on that one. Public officials sacrifice some of their free speech rights. Arguably, Wilson's outburst would not have passed the Pickering-Connick test, and thus was not protected free speech. Thus, the House acted properly when exercising their legitimate authority to address Congressman Wilson's behavior. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

How do losses due to waste, fraud, and abuse compare between medicare and private insurance? I may be way off, but I'm betting that losses due to these things either come close, or exceed the savings in administration costs. It'd be interesting to see a comparison, but I haven't been able to find any recent statistics online. Agreed, it would be an interesting comparison. Waste, fraud and abuse occur on both the private side and public side, so I doubt they would have a large effect on the comparison. However, I don't have the data to examine to support or disprove that hypothesis. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

Not really. Really. Insurance is gambling. We just don't call it that because that wouldn't portray the image that we want portrayed. There's no real difference, functionally speaking. Do you know the difference between an actuary and a successful professional poker player? They use the same tool set, and make very similar calculations. The biggest differences are the actuary's credentials and that the poker player calculates in real time. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

Correct. Insurance companies are very similar to casinos. The odds are always in favor of the house. In the both cases, that slim margin is the profit and operating costs. That's why a public option is a good idea. By removing the profit margin, it increases the odds to nearly even. Since private insurance companies tend to have higher administration costs than public policies (e.g. Medicare), a public option would further shift the odds favorably for the consumer. The odds will still be against the average consumer, but much less so with a public option that the current private market. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -
It doesn't matter if it's a government run program or not. It is not practical to force insurance companies to accept all applicants unless all citizens are required to obtain insurance. No, that doesn't make sense, nor is that what is happening in the system in which I described (i.e. the market, not the government, will still determine premium prices). Yes, via Congress' Constitutional authority as granted in the general welfare clause of Article I, Section 8. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Exactly. this as definition, is illegal. What happened in the news report wasn't. Punishing, as in this definition, a suspected criminal outside the courts is wrong. The "punish" in the news report is a word thrown around by sensationalistic news reporter and an old guy who used the verb to describe the agreement both parties agreed to. Nothing illegal happened here. I don't know what their local laws are. I can't/won't assume that vigilantism is illegal in that jurisdiction. It is, however, an affront to the rule of law, even if it isn't an explicit violation of law. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

Did you watch the video? The post commander didn't catch the vandal in the act and stop him. He tracked him down days later to punish him, without police or the court system. That is vigilantism. No it isn't. What law did he break? Yes, it was an act of vigilantism. From Black's Law Dictionary: vigilantism. The act of a citizen who takes the law into his or her own hands by apprehending and punishing suspected criminals. I saw no reason to infer that the VFW post commander is a law enforcement officer or a judge. Did you? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

No, I didn't say that. I said I was disappointed to see that "the VFW post commander has so little respect for the rule of law and the Constitution that he once swore to defend that he would act as a vigilante." Acting as a vigilante is disrespectful of the rule of law. Having said that, he may have explicitly broken laws while acting as a vigilante. We were not given enough information to determine one way or another, so I haven't and won't make any accusations of such. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -

When the VFW post commander said, "To disgrace the American flag, we can't tolerate that," it shows that he places higher priority on a symbol than he does the first amendment. If he had complained about private property being destroyed, that would have been a little bit different. Instead of utilizing police services, the commander tracked the man down himself, as a vigilante. We'll never know what choices the man was given, or when they were given, so we'll likely never know exactly what laws were broken, if any. When I served, I swore to defend the Constitution, not to protect the flag. Part of defending the Constitution is defending the right to desecrate the flag. Math tutoring available. Nope. Most people support a public option along with private insurance. The people are speaking but legislators are only listening to those with the most "free $peech." > "Most people support a public option..." Not hardly dude, people don't support this bill, nor the Public Option. Typical Lib, saying, "Most Americans support...." before every sentance. Fast Eddie: Cause, ya see, twice, Sarah... once at Ames with Minnesota Fats and then again at Arthur's, in that cheap, crummy pool room, now why'd I do it, Sarah? Why'd I do it? I coulda beat that guy, coulda beat 'im cold, he never woulda known. But I just hadda show 'im. Just hadda show those creeps and those punks what the game is like when it's great, when it's REALLY great. You know, like anything can be great, anything can be great. I don't care, BRICKLAYING can be great, if a guy knows. If he knows what he's doing and why and if he can make it come off. When I'm goin', I mean, when I'm REALLY goin' I feel like a... like a jockey must feel. He's sittin' on his horse, he's got all that speed and that power underneath him... he's comin' into the stretch, the pressure's on 'im, and he KNOWS... just feels... when to let it go and how much. Cause he's got everything workin' for 'im: timing, touch. It's a great feeling, boy, it's a real great feeling when you're right and you KNOW you're right. It's like all of a sudden I got oil in my arm. The pool cue's part of me. You know, it's a pool cue, it's got nerves in it. It's a piece of wood, it's got nerves in it. Feel the roll of those balls, you don't have to look, you just KNOW. You make shots that nobody's ever made before. I can play that game the way... NOBODY'S ever played it before.
