  1. A buddy gave me a packed rig for the weekend but cautioned me to repack it. Him: It's a shitty packjob. Me: What makes it shitty? Him: The packjob. Of course it opened beautifully.
  2. Cheers, Just reporting yet another positive experience from dealing with Richard Hazel @ Buildarig (a Safire 149 canopy). The guy who I was helping to buy the canopy screwed the payment up a bit and it spent a long time clearing at the bank... long story short, the canopy got here (overseas) a couple days BEFORE Richard got his money for it. He was very good and understanding about it.
  3. I think a far more interesting comparison would be for people to list what they think is "the worst currently produced BASE gear."
  4. Renamed the picture for easier viewing.
  5. Aw, come on. You know, it's more of a "if you can't help going in, at least do it with some dignity" kind of jump
  6. A plane breaks in many pieces at 20,000ft, and three hundred passengers are hurtling towards the ground, among them a skydiver. He looks around and wonders, "Whoa now... let me get this straight. Here we are, three hundred people at 20,000 feet making our VERY LAST JUMP. How come nobody is doing any RW?"
  7. Can I send some beer your way? Thanks! I hope it works out with Lori (the seller).
  8. That solution, while very viable, is just no fun!
  9. I've acquired a Sony DCR PC109 camera that unfortunately came without a handycam station. Ordering it online does not seem to be an option so far as I checked, and a local dealer has it for $260 (which is about $40 more than what I got the camera for). Surely there's got to be a cheaper, easier way to transfer video off the camera and onto my PC? Thanks!
  10. That was an expostulation duly repudiated! Bravo!
  11. I am not sure I follow what you mean... what sort of beams? I tried making a few figure-eight folds around the legs of a stool, but it worked fairly poorly (it was slanted to whichever side the last fold ended at).
  12. Well, packing outside has ceased being an option for me (or rather the only way to pack), now that it's officially winter in Moscow. My apartment is fairly cluttered, and I can't make enough room for unrestricted packjobs. Now I have a big canopy. What is the best way to retain the lines together symmetrically and keep them under tension while I do stuff to the canopy?
  13. No. I don't want to trust my reserve any more than is necessary, and I am confident I can land with rears (although I never did that with the toggles fully released and trailing behind... not sure how big a difference it makes, probably fairly significant since the tail is totally unrestricted). I do carry a hook-knife, but replacing a steering line is not that much easier than a repack... (in the field I mean). I think I will try to sew something together and see if I can make it work, I guess.
  14. An unnecessary cutaway and a possible loss of a $1300+ main. I am thinking more along the lines of this, but way, way less easily released.
  15. Let me clarify by saying, "intentional toggle release"...
  16. Are there any designs that allow for toggle release in skydiving? Except hookknives.
  17. The jumper is unhurt, and very much unsure of what happened. He says he can't really remember what he was doing because the whole crew got busted shortly after the jump, and he was a bit overwhelmed. Thanks for the input, guys! I learned a lot of interesting things.

Care to elaborate on that? I've seen it done a few times, and it never was pretty, and sometimes downright scary. Personally I am guilty of #3, jumping after a couple sleepless nights. That was one ugly jump. I could never concentrate on the task at hand, and I kept dozing off on the climb up. There's been a picture posted here somewhere of someone in freefall with an undone chest strap; that was me. Luckily it was a TARD jump (tard in more ways than one, eh).

    "Bad Ideas" list

Jumping/packing drunk. Jumping/packing under drugs. Jumping/packing after 2 sleepless nights.
  20. There was a light, think 6-8 MPH, crosswind.
  21. I don't think so because the other jumpers had nice smooth flights to where the cameraman is, I just excluded them from the video for size purposes. Basically, the canopy never gets any forward speed despite the jumper having unstowed the toggles, and just drops straight down. I have yet to get the jumper's impression of what happened, though.
  22. Please watch the video (2mb, WMV). What do you think would cause the canopy to behave so weirdly? (Gear: clapped out 350-jump Troll 265 MDV, WSX)
