I fail to see why it is the state's jobs to legislate your (not you personally) kids into behaving decently. That is your job as a parent. I would hope that my (future) children would come to me with stuff like that, and I will do my best to raise them in a non-judgemental atmosphere that makes it natural. A couple of things: Can someone please explain to me why it is considered OK to shoot a buglar. Burglary is not a capital offense. If anyone shoots an unarmed burglar they should be prosecuted for murder. End of story. Switzerland: I live there currently, and yes they all have guns of varying caliber allowing them to fight their way to their unit in case of invasion. However they are now contemplating storing the guns centrally due to a few too many cases of husbands deciding to use their wife's head for target practice. Americans and Europeans generally don't understand each other on this point (= guns, not Switzerland

My background is 16 years of Shinson Hapkido training. Two points: 1) When choosing a style or school I will tell you the same as I tell any parent when they ask me about what to choose for their kids: Go there, take a lesson and talk to the instructor. You will quickly figure out if it is a place where you want to be. They will not (or should not) be offended that you are just "shopping" around. They are used to it (at least I am). 2) As for TKD it is a mixture from the 50's of a number of Korean schools. There is no such thing as "standard" TKD, at least there didn't use to be. It is thus very much different what you will experience depending on who is the teacher/master and what his/her background is. Some places merely take bit enough of the Kukkiwon curriculum to be able to do competition fighting, while others take a shall we say more complete approach. I like your post. The problem arises when he shows up to warn about the fire, and all they see is a guy freaked out about the fire place in his room. Furthermore he was so busy getting out of his room that he didn't get dressed, and now we have him trying to convince the other guests that they should leave, while they try to get him dressed, so he doesn't catch pneumonia.

Depends who you compare with. I am not sure a comparison with France (or most EU countries for that matter) would be flattering. What I notice in particular is the difference in casualties. 50-60 people were killed in LA. I agree and stand corrected. Actually one might be tempted to say that we are quite sure that most (if not all) scientific theories are "wrong" in the sense of "not true". That however does not diminish the descriptive power of some models. Evolution, General Relativity, Quantum Mechanics... These are all models which we know to describe parts of Nature. Are they "true"? That question can per definition never be answered. Edit: Speling is hart...
