    Tonight I was having a beer with a friend after work. Beer is good. Friends are good. Soon time passes 2 am and I had best be heading home. Om my way I pass the main building of my university, a place that was founded in 1479 (yes, that is before Columbus). I decide to walk the shortest route possible, and I find myself walking past the entrance of the supreme court. Not a guard in sight. I pass the church where our heir to the throne was baptized a few days ago, whereupon I continue past the main entrance to parliament. Noone to be seen. For some strange reason I thought this post just might belong in Speakers Corner. (oh, and in the 7-11 I ran into one of our most well-known actors. He looked a bit drunk.)     It may not meet your definition of torture, but at the very least I think it is a violation of the 3rd Geneva convention, Part III, art. 17: This is a treaty signed by the US.     Also we do not know for certain that we are at the global minimum of the vacuum energy. Cosmological inflation indicates that vacuum has decayed at least once in the history of the Universe. It might do it again. We might set it off... As for the monopole it would just look like a platinum nucleus (lots of ionization) traversing the detector in a strange trajectory.     Actually it would be way more entertaining if it turns out that bound states containing s-quarks are energetically favourable to the regular u,d-type matter, as so-called "strangelets" might then form in the detector and start a chain reaction turning the entire Earth into exotic hadronic matter.
