I'm confused as to why that's necessarily a bad thing. The money that organizations like Salvation Army and Goodwill (among others) make in their stores funds their programs. If you don't agree with their programs, that's one thing, but just because it's being sold doesn't necessarily make it a bad choice for donations. It's a more indirect way to get assistance to those in need, but it's not going to profits for profit's sake, either. When I moved from Seattle a lot of my donations went to Goodwill for a couple reasons 1) it was ridiculously convenient (about a mile from my house) and 2) I think their job training programs are a great thing. When getting rid of more formal business clothes I'd take those to Dress for Success, and other things would get sold on craigslist or passed on through freecycle. I'm due for another round of purging stuff as there's some stuff I just didn't get to before the move that's been sitting in my extra room waiting to find a new home. You know it only counts if she's *in* them, right? So you should probably scratch "Step 1: Sneak into her laundry room" off the list. Without a car you'll have a tough time getting out to any of the DZs in the area. Monterey Bay is more focused on tandems - you'll have better luck as a fun jumper at the other three DZs you listed. You might also look at Bay Area Skydiving in Byron (which is actually the closest to the city, though the others aren't considerably farther). As for "near to bars / hotels," again, you'll need a car to get to any of those from the DZs in Northern California. None of them has any within walking distance, nor is there public transit. I'd imagine the give a shit factor is quite high among all the people at the Wounded Warrior Foundation and the Special Olympics who benefited from the fund raising associated with the previous efforts. About the only thing you'll be required to bring is a good set of shoes... any sort of athletic shoes that enclose your foot will work ... don't show up in flip-flops. But as others have said, the rest will be provided for you. And if you think $300 for an alti is high (though you can buy a solid, functional analog altimeter for MUCH less than that, especially if you buy used), wait till you get a load of the costs for the rest of your gear. State Says 2 years and $4M, volunteers do it in 8 days with donations
NWFlyer replied to NWFlyer's topic in Speakers Corner
http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/04/09/hawaii.volunteers.repair/index.html?eref=rss_topstories#cnnSTCPhoto I'm not sure if I'm more impressed with the ability of this community of business owners to come together to get this done, or more saddened by the inefficiency of the state ... assuming that the bridge repairs are certified as safe, the fact that a team of 30 volunteers could do in 8 days what the state thought would take 2 years is pretty impressive. Granted, the article does imply that quite a bit of that 2 year estimate would be time waiting for funding to be available. Once you get your license, you'll find it very straightforward to skydive around the country and around the world, and the best thing about the skydiving community (especially if you get to know people through this and other online sites) is that you'll have an instant community when you land in a new location. I know that when I traveled a lot for work the local skydivers made my life away from home much more fun. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Mamba's a nice helmet, but it's not for everyone. I bought a Mamba (at the time, it and the original FreeZR were the only ones that fit my freakishly large head), and while it fits, it's just not comfortable for me. I don't like the way it hits my mouth/nose. Though I'm not suffocating, I feel like I am and I just can't get comfortable in the thing, so I sold it almost immediately. The FreeZR II, on the other hand, feels wide open and comfortable. I just got one, and so far have only used it in the tunnel, but for my head/face shape, it's a great fit. How in the H*LL Do You Sleep With Bruised Ribs?!?

Let's see. She's had x-rays. Takes a doctor to order those. She's had Rx muscle relaxants. Takes a doctor to prescribe those. She's getting PT. Takes a doctor to order that. I'm guessing that although it wasn't explicitly stated, she's covered on the getting it checked out by a professional thing. While I appreciate the desire to get a deal and/or let someone else break in the canopy for easier packing, if you pay $2000 for a new Pilot, you're not doing it right. Going through any reputable dealer, you shouldn't pay full retail price. As for the deal, yeah, it sucks, but as others have pointed out you weren't out any cash. It's possible that the seller was counting on a deal to come through for him (the ad does say that he's downsizing) and that didn't work out. Or any number of other things. Yes, he should be responsible and take it down, but I'm willing to bet there's quite a few items still listed that are no longer for sale for various reasons. Many people don't bother to take their ads down when the items sell ... which makes it annoying for the buyers, but it is what it is. Which weather website for Skydiving?
NWFlyer replied to aceofd1amonds's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Search here for the airport's AWOS (if it has it) http://www.faa.gov/AIRPORTS_AIRTRAFFIC/WEATHER/ASOS/ I have all of the local DZs that have AWOS programmed into my phone. Yeah, that's pretty dumb. Most of the places I've worked *officially* won't reimburse for alcohol with meals, but unofficially as long as your total charges are within reason no one needs the itemized bill so a couple beers with dinner never killed anyone. And of course, you're aware of the company I worked for that priced out its contracts so low that its employees would be stuck in non-pedestrian friendly areas (like, say, Atlanta ) without a rental car (because there wasn't room in the budget, of course ) and would have to rely on the kindness of their friends or the stupid hotel shuttle van to go anywhere. Thinking about packing my own reserve.

Why go through the effort of packing it at all? See the "seal polishing" thread for lots of great ideas so you don't even have to work at it. So how do I convince my irrational wife to let me skydive?

There's your problem right there. Your policy is covered by a credit default swap. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke -
Looks like that part's now working correctly. Now all we need is the "copy shortcut" link. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

Was that the Storm demo, or the Pulse? I asked specifically about this, and the Pulse is only offered in Vectran. Apparently, the shape of the airfoil (look at it from the front, it's crazy flat across the middle cells of the canopy then droops off) is critical enough that they're only using Vectran on it, so that it stays in trim during the life of the lines. That was the Pulse. No wonder the lines looked/felt different. We figured it was some sort of weird new Spectra coating. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Spectra. I tried the Storm last summer. Something was wonky about the trim on the demo I received so it had a built-in turn and noticeably heavier toggle pressure on one side (I think the left). There weren't any obvious differences between the brake lines (like massive twists), but I did report it to PD when I returned the canopy so they could inspect it. Only put three jumps on it given those conditions (and IIRC, weather was a factor, too). I don't feel like I got a fair shot at really knowing how the canopy flies, but I do recall great openings - "positive" is really the best word. Not snively, not snappy, just "there, quickly." Packing is obviously more challenging since it's all-ZP and was still quite new. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. I think that a table with the gridlines not showing/printing will achieve what you're looking for. (Assuming you're using Word 2003 or older): Table Insert Table Number of columns: 5 Number of rows: (pick a number - as you tab through it'll keep adding rows to the bottom or you can manually add them). Then once you've created the table, do this: Table Select Table Format Borders & Shading Borders: None After you do that you'll still see the borders in light gray on the screen but they will not print. You can adjust column width to suit your needs. Hope that makes sense. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please.
