  1. Bump to share this article about renter's insurance. http://www.smartonmoney.com/five-myths-regarding-renters-insurance "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  2. Maybe it's just a bad print/bad scan, but she looks pretty blonde in the last pic. Could just be that my eyes are bad since I'm old, bat-shit crazy, and over a size 8, though. 3. Probably laziness on the part of the original reporter(s), and lemming syndrome on the part of the rest. With the way news budgets have been slashed of late, more and more news sources (be they newspaper, TV, radio, or their supporting web sites) are doing much less of their own reporting and writing and a lot more of pulling things off the wire and republishing them. Wire stories have always been a part of the news industry, but it seems with the proliferation of news on the web, the 24 hour news cycle, and the desire to constantly feed the "news machine," there's more and more poorly-researched and poorly-edited garbage out there, and it's able to multiply faster. That's not even touching the fact that it's become less "news" and more "sensationalism." "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 4. Talk about stating the obvious?! One would think. Yet there are an awful lot of people who seem to think that life happens to them. 5. Oh, yeah, there is an immense amount of stupidity on the hiring side as well! "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  6. ... if you're a snake. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1366202/Snake-dies-silicone-poisoning-biting-models-breasts.html?ITO=1490 (Possibly NSFW) "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 7. But isn't how you react to something that someone else did to you also a choice? I remember my mom saying something along the lines of "You probably blame me for [whatever I might have been bitching about]? I said "Mom, I'm an adult who's been out of the house for a long time. If I'm still blaming you for my current problems, that says more about me than it does about you or anything you ever could have done." We'll call that "other." 9. You really hate women, don't you? WHERE DID YOU GET THAT FROM? If anything I'm envious! My bad, actually based on what we know about you, it really does make perfect sense that you would envy those exact things.

  11. Me too - I love the balance of quiet time and social time that I have with my SO. This thread reminds me of an IM conversation I had last night with a single male friend (who, btw, is a very cool guy that I would - and have - set up with a friend) J: outta here. J: Hot date K: do tell J: Not much to tell yet. K: have fun :) J: thanks. K: i've just got a trip to costco. not nearly as exciting J: You can always "pick something up" there. ;) K: LOL K: actually, i'll take costco over being back on the dating scene. J: yeah, i can understand that. Waking up this morning and reading this thread only confirms that sentiment. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 12. Students are typically cleared for solo status after completion of AFF or their initial set of static line/IAD jumps. They're still considered a student until they have their A license (minimum 25 jumps, completion and documentation of all required skills for the A license). However, no matter whether we're talking "cleared to solo" or "completed A license," your statement is still not something I'd want to hear from an instructor. Our job is to grow student skydivers into A licensed jumpers, whether that takes 25 jumps or 50 or more, not to tell them to quit just because they aren't progressing at the fastest pace. Of course we have to make judgments about those for whom skydiving really isn't the right sport, but that judgment should come only after trying different teaching techniques (including different teachers, if necessary). I can't think of too many things that would cause me to give up on working with a student who really wanted to stay in the sport (and working with them might mean handing them off to another instructor or coach if we weren't clicking). About the only time I might consider giving up on a student is if he/she were a constant willful danger to him/herself and/or others and wasn't willing to work with the instructional staff to understand and modify their approach/actions. Of course, students can be a danger to themselves and others without it being willful, a lot of the time it's just because they're learning and making mistakes (one of our instructors called them "blue-jumpsuited killing machines" at Safety Day when he was strongly encouraging experienced jumpers to assume that students don't see other jumpers in the pattern in the student landing area. He's right, but we work with our students to gradually get better at that, and most things.) "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 13. I know there's a lot of folks looking for work these days; I think this is one of the best overall articles I've read on job hunting and all the stuff people should do but don't (or shouldn't do and do). The third tip in particular is pure gold. http://www.wisebread.com/how-to-avoid-getting-hired "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 14. He's great in this movie. Of course, I'm also a total Aaron Sorkin groupie, too, so anything that has Sorkin behind it will usually get me into the theater. 15. if he is still on student status after 30 jumps then i have to say the instructors are not doing their job right then again they may not have givin him the proper bowling speech either
  16. I just read feuergnom's responses and can't get what either of them have to do with that? Are you just looking for opportunities to make everything into a gender issue? 18. You might just do better than anyone else. A few years back (2000) two 8-seeds made it to the Final Four. This doesn't happen (or at least, it hadn't happened till then). The woman who won the pool in my then-office was the one who picked one of those schools because she went there or knew someone who went there. General rules I follow (not that I've ever won one ): --Don't send more than 2 #1 seeds to the Final 4. --First round: Do not pick a 16/1 upset (never happens) or 15/2 upset (happens so rarely that picking it is not a good call), but pick one 14/3 upset (happens with surprising frequency, but the problem is figuring out which one). Also pick a 12/5 upset - again, seems to happen regularly, the problem is picking which one. --Flip a coin on the 8/9 and 7/10 games, or pick them based on equally arbitrary factors (I like their mascot! I know someone who lives near there!) --Send at least 2 teams with a 9 or lower seed to the Sweet 16, but don't send them any further than that. Cinderella's slipper usually falls off around then. 19. Probably not if you also want to skydive (of course, there are other ways to finance your skydiving, but that might mean packing on the weekends when you'd rather be jumping). Others have mentioned the specifics of the cost of living in certain areas; trying to get a place you can afford might mean living farther away from your job (which could mean higher commute costs, especially with gas prices rising). But if the job helps you meet your overall career goals, it might be a good move anyway. Only you know that. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 20. Don't forget the AAD if you have one! Soaking one of those for 24 hours could be an expensive wash! "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  21. I assume you mean anywhere beyond Japan. Here in CA, I've heard water level numbers from 1-9 feet higher than normal; risky, but not tsunami level. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/03/11/BAEU1I9993.DTL&feed=rss.bayarea "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 22. How about this: If you have an AAD fire because you got that low without deploying your own parachute, then you are automatically grounded for two months to think about it. I believe Perris had a one-month sit-down policy for AAD fires - can anyone confirm they still have it? I think it's a good idea to consider (as long as there are exceptions for legit fires due to incapacitation - though depending on how that happened and how the landing was, there might be a de facto grounding anyway while the jumper recovers). 23. I was around for one (jumper had 300ish jumps, you were probably around that day, too). Afterward he was surprisingly nonchalant. I talked to him a bit about it; I didn't get angry, but did say something along the lines of "You do know this is a big deal, right?" He agreed, but said that he wasn't that freaked out. I said "You will be. At least you should be. Might not hit you till later, but I bet it will." Sure enough, he confirmed to me a that he'd had a sleepless night that night going over the "what ifs" again in his mind. I think it's an ongoing process that starts with the FJC and continues well beyond the point where a jumper is under supervision of instructors and coaches. There's a point where there has to be a shift from instructor to mentor - I think the "mentor" relationship can lead to a more receptive audience in a licensed (but still relatively inexperienced) skydiver. I know for me personally it took a few years in the sport to really start to get it - while I "got it" on a conceptual level, I think it takes seeing / hearing about enough incidents and close calls to realize all the different ways that the "consequences' can come out and bite you in the ass. Not that I didn't get that you could die ... but it takes a while to absorb all the possible ways that can happen. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 24. I landed on the Washington State Patrol's high-speed driving training course and had to be retrieved by a couple state troopers. No one was training that day so the whole facility was completely locked down. They only drove me as far as the exit to the state property where a truck from the DZ was waiting for me. Once they confirmed I didn't need any medical attention we had some good laughs about whether I should be arrested for trespassing. Good Lord! That could've been real ugly, had the place been 'open for business'! The really good part is, you were O.K. and able to laugh about it. Chuck I made it onto one of the small patches of grass off the course itself, but yes, it was nice not to have to worry about dodging cars to get there. Worst case scenario I would have landed on empty tarmac. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please.
