Because although there have been no new cases here for a couple days the ones that we have had lately have come from truckers. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/manitoba-covid-19-update-1.5600052 The update means three of the last four cases identified in the Winnipeg region have been truck drivers. Last week, two other truck drivers tested positive for COVID-19. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/manitoba-covid-19-update-1.5593375 There have also been some cases imported from Alberta, where there is a political push back against Covid prevention measures (like wearing masks) among some people.

I'm still trucking into WI and the mid-west in general. But I'm thinking of quitting soon. The last few cases here in Manitoba have been traced to truckers working cross border into the Infected States of America.

But how many Americans tuned it to see if the rally was successful or not? Who can turn away from a train wreck? Basically he crashed and burned and the nation is laughing at him now.

Personally I do not believe Ron and his group are blind to Trump's faults at all. Rather, they are blinded by fear and hatred of liberals and the idea of social changes that they see coming. Trump is just the agent that currently is helping to slow down the change.

I uploaded a file. I did not and probably could not read the thing. It runs nearly 600 pages of Bolton's bile.

Apparently the fanatical side of the right wing has become inspired by Heather Heyer's killer. Running over protesters is now a thing. https://www.npr.org/2020/06/21/880963592/vehicle-attacks-rise-as-extremists-target-protesters

It all depends on who is motivated enough to vote this time. The effects of Covid-19 and GOP voter suppression combined are a big unknown.

Most of the power is still held by white men as far as I can see. Others have made some inroads, but for now the patriarchy seems largely intact. But at the same time it is clearly beginning to be displaced and make way for change and power sharing through a meritocracy. It's all part of the strange ch ch ch changes that so many see coming and fear.

He (Simon Esler) is the best kind of con man. He's Canadian!!! https://poddtoppen.se/podcast/1458666262/journey-to-truth/ep-54-simon-esler-worlds-within-awakening-journey-spiritual-warfare-qanon-tactics Not much info on him yet. He is still young but bound to make a splash. His acting career failed, but now he has a new gig fooling stupid Americans.

But who would give money to John Bolton? I can't imagine.....
-
In a society filled with as many killing machines as the USA unarmed police would be ineffective. It wouldn't even work in Canada. It only works where there is effective restrictions on weapons.
-
There absolutely will be a mass vaccination campaign happening in about 12 months from now. The only question is how effective and long lasting the available vaccines will be. Yes, it has not happened before. But we have never had the tools and resources available that we now have. There will also be huge public battles over who gets it first and who will be required to get it. This will make the conspiracy theories currently being fought over look quaint. It will be a Battle Royale.

Ummm.....yes, and several legacy carriers failed. Deregulation happened here at roughly the same time as in the US. There were no money losing airlines before deregulation. That's what regulation was, protected markets leading to a guaranteed profit. Which lead to inflated labour agreements, which in turn led to failed carriers when the protections were removed. But the real point I'm making is that private airlines and public services are completely different in nature. Society can handle turmoil in the airline industry as an inconvenience. Turmoil in the police is far more concerning.
-
The airline industry did not succeed in getting labour costs under control until deregulation happened. The police are still a public service monopoly. It is far easier for a politician to deal with the fallout of a bad contract than it is to deal with a police strike. Or rotating walkout, or whatever political pressure the union brings to bear.
-
I merely said they are more popular than the politicians they are supposed to answer to. That is not a high bar.
-
The source of the problem is far deeper than the police. Police racial attitudes are a reflection of societal attitudes. But that said the behavior of police should be controllable. We have allowed a certain amount of accountability as long as we feel safe and that most of us are not victims. Yes, we need disciplined police. But we also need deeper reforms.
-
Count me in. We clearly need police. But we need the police to be less of a military operation.
-
I'm not sure why you think that. There is a treatment announced this week that cuts the death rate of those on ventilators by 25%. That is helpful, but hardly game changing. Prevention will always be far better than treatment. And some of the less deadly effects of this illness are beginning to look pretty bad.

There are laws requiring good faith negotiations with unions. It is fine to "not renew" an agreement, but you must negotiate a new one if that is what you want. Generally if a new agreement is not agreed upon the old one remains in force. Laws at the state level will be needed to bust those unions and even then there will be constitutional issues. That is why public service unions have not been banned by red state governments. They have protections.
-
I don't know how it is where you are, but labour laws here do not make it so easy to bust a union or a collective agreement. And for good reason. Doing away with police union and agreements will require passing legislation. This will be a huge struggle.
