Just to go on the record, I think this is a horrible event, and indeed sexual abuse of a child. Further, I also suspect a double standard...but I am not sure how many charges against men are dropped because the victim doesn't want to testify. As for house arrest and probation, I think that was a light, light sentence, but likely the best that the prosecutors could do with a witness who refuses to testify. So, now the argument is between free will and personalities. Jeannie, I see many people I knew as children who were whiny, spoiled, brats - trust fund babies, too...and who vote the democratic ticket. Similarly, I know many quiet, non-demanding, poor kids who grew up to vote the republican ticket. I'd like to see what passes for science in this study; this would take more than a brief "talk study" to determine; more likely a 40 year study following a huge number of kids, who were followed from birth through several serious election cycles, with a measurement of maturation of ideas and positions occuring along the way. At this point, I'd say that the study was flawed, and not really indicative of much else other than the studier's personal observations. Steve, if you think you might be, go see a psychiatrist and get their assessment. They're the ones who count. If it's not true, you'll be able to say "well, Gramma, that's not the reason. Dad's an asshole." If it is true, you have options to consider. Get a real therapist/counselor to give you a diagnosis, rather than here on DZ.com. There are some amazing folks (and they've posted here), but it's definitely not the same as having a Dr. tell you. Like we always say about skydiving, don't trust what you read...talk to your instructor (in this analogy, a therapist.). I sincerely doubt that I would be arrested - let alone charged - if I had acted in good faith to protect a child. If there were signs clearly saying "this is a stunt" then perhaps yes...but that isn't what happened. What happened was staged, sure...but there is no way for the passersby to know that, and because of that, I would take action to save a child...if it landed me in jail, so be it...but I doubt that it would...and if it did, any attorney worth his salt would be working on a settlement with the network for me because it was staged and I'm being punished for not walking past a child screaming for help. I've gotten involved in situations in the past...and I will again. I have been there...and I have prevented an abduction. I will do it again in a New York second...despite potential risks to myself. I saw the segment. It was rather realistic; the little girl was doing a very good job of getting attention, and of letting people know that man was not her Daddy...which is what the kids are taught to do. She struggled, and shrieked. In re the quoted part, as I sat there and watched, my reaction was "that guy would be one hurting son of a bitch if that happened in front of me..." I imagine I'd've tackled him at full speed, and taken him out before the people who were staging it could get to me and tell me it was a hoax. They'd be pulling me off him...or he'd be in front of a car. And those who know me know I mean it, and could do it easily. I'd rather be justifying my actions to a jury than justifying my actions to a mother of a child who was kidnapped, raped and killed because I did nothing about it. Good on you for taking in a stray, and a handicapped one at that. I know a network of shelters around the country that will spay for little to no cost in some cases. PM me your city, and I'll see if there's one around you. Yes, she will be a hussy; she's fed, comfortable, and relatively safe...what else is there to do but bring kittens into the world? She's street walking for sure, but it really can be hell on the humans, and also isn't too good for her. So let me know if I can help... Yes, several of mine do. Abby loves the news scroll on MSNBC, and Simon has been known to "talk" back to the television. He tends to prefer movies - louder sound, and it winds him right up. Makes it a little hard to watch them peacefully, but hey, he's funny. Abby, at the moment, is apparently allergic to the floor; she has been going through the house from one piece of furniture to another, avoiding touch-down. That cat can jump! But I've got to ask - why is Belle in heat? Are you planning on breeding her? Probably not a good idea with a genetic issue like her leg. So get her fixed as quickly as you can; it's not easy living with a cat in heat, nor is it safe (they can escape faster than liquid silver when they are in heat...). I love classical guitar, but I have to be in the right mood. However, the hammered dulcimer is an amazing sound, and one that, if you haven't already heard, should listen to some time. As I'm Scots Irish, that sound simply appeals to me on many levels. I also like pan flutes; when played by a master, and backed by strings and/or drums, there's something big and lonely and whole in them that can't be duplicated. Goes to show that there are some folks who are absolutely gorgeous but harbor such evil...looks don't make the man (or woman). I knew who it was from the first shot, but that's because I followed his story closely, and have read pretty much everything I can find about him. Fascinating fellow: brilliant, handsome, witty...and killed many, many women in some incredibly gruesome ways. And it's thought he killed far more than he was ever convincingly tied to. And yes, Park Deitz and Jon Douglas have some fascinating stuff they've written about him; he was a case study for some of their profiling methods, as well as part of the character Hannibal Lecter's makeup (there were two others: Ed Guine (I think that's how it's spelled), and someone else that I can't recall off hand...).
