This is a really interesting thread. Lots of people have lots of ideas about what makes them a "skydiver". For example, if you don't/do have a license. If you don't/do have X number of jumps. If you don't/do know this person or that person. If you don't/do have X number of years in the sport. If you haven't/have been to that boogie...And all are valid points, milestones, and goals...but they don't define, for me, what a skydiver is. To me, it's about an acceptance - of risks, of joy, of challenge, of life. It's about an attitude: I can, if I try... It's about looking at the sky NOT as "that thing up there", but as the playground. It's about seeing in a brand new way - with all your senses awake, maybe for the first time. It's about a yearning, a longing, a different way of relating to yourself and to the world around you... It's about a willingness to take yourself somewhere most people haven't been, and won't go, and take yourself there with eagerness and with a smile. It's about many, many things. Sure, jumping out of a plane makes you, by definition, a skydiver. But I know jumpers who have none of what I think of as "Skytude"...and it's when you have "Skytude" - well then, to me, you are a skydiver. Just my thoughts - as usual.... 1) you must be a sky diver! depends on who you talk to...some call me a skyfaller... 2) you must be a dropzone.com member. That's true. 3) you must have an impeccable safety record Does this mean in the sky, or driving, or workplace accidents, or small arms fire, or??? 4) you must have an annual income of at leat $12,000.00 a year, or be in college. Hmmmmm. Gross or take-home? 5) you must own an automobile that "could" be considered a sports, or luxury automobile, even if it's a junker! [Wink]BLack Jetta, leather seats, stick shift 5-speed....does that count? The insurance co. thinks it is.... 6) someone must have taken a "shot" at you for being a Yuppie, at least once in the last 6 months Well, there have been shots taken, but no-one's called me a Yuppie.... 7) you must conduct yourself with the utmost restraint, even under the heaviest of fire Well, this leaves me out...I yelled at someone recently...and hung up on him...under extreme provocation, I might add...but still, that was not "conducting myself with the utmost restraint". 8) you must give freely, and willingly to the newbies of our sport, giving back when you can Hee hee, that's the fun part. 9) when you see a place where your "Yuppie" brother, or sister could, or is stumbling, you must render aid, if you can. I can usually tell when they're stumbling, but have no aid to render, as I usually am laying face down in the dirt at that time...cause it's me they've stumbled over... 10) last, but not least, be safe, have fun, and when you can, lend a hand. Done.... So, I don't think I meet all the requirements...however, I will work harder to accomplish this, and someday, maybe years in the future but someday, I can join the august ranks of Skydiver Yuppie-dom! Well, Lovie-Dovie, I am not a guy, so I'm not going to flirt with you or anything. But I am gonna tell you a truth or two I've learned in my life. 1. Most everything changes. What's shit today, can turn around tomorrow. Hang on until tomorrow, and see what's changed...maybe you, maybe the circumstances, maybe someone else...but it is never the same. 2. Too much hard liquor makes you sick. Eat expensive chocolates instead. They just make you fat.... 3. When you're too depressed to do something for yourself, do something for someone else. Send someone a card; hold the door for someone who doesn't expect it. Do little things for others, and you will start to see your value again. 4. Crying is good for the soul. Walking around with puffy eyelids isn't. Cry. Cry hard, cry long. Wail into the pillow. Then, get an icepack for your eyes. You'll have the best of both worlds. 5. A hug from a child changes the world. Get a hug from a child. And since I strive to recapture childhood daily, here's one right now: ((((((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))))))))))))))). Uh, Nathan, do you realize it will take at least 90 minutes to get to Perris? Lots more if there's traffic, even more if there are lots of cops that I have to dodge.....so the earliest we will get there is 10:45 pm...and that's if your flight is not late, no traffic, you haven't checked baggage, etc. We could be there very very late.... Oh, I am. As I was explaining it to a friend the other day, I always hit back, but never hit first. And that stragegy was great in tourne's, too, cause then they had to defend after attacking, and most people can't fight well in both areas. Not to mention they were generally having to fight while going backwards...tee hee..... As to getting my "b", this accuracy landing thing is getting to me....I've tried to find out if you have to land on your feet, or if your bottom counts... Actually, shortly, I will be taking the B license - likely after the October festivities...but I'll know more then. Broken things many times, but no x-rays to post 3 years: split my lower lip wide open playing airplane with my Dad 5 years: cracked my noggin open falling from a fence 7 years: broke right leg (tib fib and ankle)and severe concussion when I was hit by a car 10 years: a fight in the school yard fractured my left wrist...but I won...came back the next day and whacked the bully over the head with my cast. I got suspended, but he got stitches.... 12 years: in gymnastics, tore all ligaments in left ankle 13 years: lacerated palm and thumb...a tomato was the cause (trying to make a salad has it's challenges) 31-34: all toes (many times), most fingers earning my black belt 34 broke left ankle while doing a backflip pushing off the wall, pretending I was 17 and Jackie Chan, at the martial arts studio 34: Broke a rib during a black belt tournament...but I won anyway. 35: broke 4 ribs sailing over the bannister and through the plate glass window (ex..) Morning, Kids! Just got an e-mail from Jack Gramley....re: the team room and a bunkhouse... I mentioned to him that we will be meeting @ 8-9 in the Bombshelter, so if there was anything he needed from us as a group, that would be the best time to catch us... he's being most excellent about this .com invasion, and I for one really appreciate it.
