Hi, all... Just thought I'd let you know that I got confirmation that the interview I did will be aired on September 16, 2002, at 9:30pm...the series is called "True Outdoor Adventures", and I am supposedly on the 2nd half of the hour show that night. The channel is ESPN2, rather than ESPN, 'cause there's Monday Night football or something like that. If anything changes, I'll post about it, but as it stands, them thar's the info. I am not a parent, unfortunately, but I can say that you are a wonderful man, and have managed to do right by yourself and your children. What better role model than that? Far better than some people will ever do, Lummy. You've made it through some really hard times, and some really sad times. And my letter to them this morning... ************ Dear Sirs: Recently, I have noticed that your programming has included skydiving and skydiving accidents/success stories. While I may not agree with most of it (i.e. the "Fun/Fear" episode...too many problems with that jumper to detail), I do appreciate your interest in getting information out there. As a skydiver, I see many things in the media which are inaccurate, and it saddens me. As you are in the "documentary/educational" aspect rather than the "news" aspect of the media, I thought I would mention that there is a huge event happening in the near future which you may be interested in filming, documenting and airing...and yes, of course it's on skydiving! In early October, "Jump For The Cause" will occur. This is a skydiving fundraiser to raise money to research a cure for breast cancer, and it is a week long event which will culminate in a Woman's World's Record attempt of 140+ women in the air, designing and performing a formation (all connected in one way or another to each other). All the participants are exceptional, world class jumpers, and this record is a difficult goal - but for a great cause. This year's recipient of funds raised is The City of Hope. Not only have these participants demonstrated great skill and dedication, they will be coming from all over the world from all walks of life, and have raised significant money for JFTC. They are coming together for a common goal - to raise money to research a cure for breast cancer. Skydiving is exhilarating, and to do it in conjunction with raising money for Jump For The Cause is an amazing way to contribute, don't you think? If you are interested in seeing what skydiving really is, rather than various death plunges (which makes for great tv but are not terribly accurate), please do not hesitate to contact me. I thought he grabbed something wrong...but I don't know that system, so I couldn't tell you. I will say he obviously didn't listen in the FJC....he had no arch on exit, and during his "death plunge" he was butt to earth, and he never accepted the possibility that his radios wouldn't work, and he'd have to land by himself....and never got the concept that you are responsible for yourself up there... Maybe I'm being too hard on him...but it was clear to me from the get-go that shit happens, and it's up to me to handle it... Good footage, though... DZ's charge what the market will bear. If the cost is too high, then the jumpers will find other dz's to jump at. If the jumper is willing to pay the price, then the DZ's stay in business....and if the high cost jump tix DZ retains it's customers, then other dz's in the area will raise their prices, because it has been demonstrated that the cost will be borne, and the customer base will remain. [on disclaimer]I am not an experienced jumper, and likely shouldn't be offering any advice...and the most important thing is to talk to your JM's, and learn from them, as they have seen you on the ground and in the air...[/off disclaimer] I have had similar rotation problems. My problem was my arms - stuck straight out and rigid...the solution I was taught was to be able to see both hands in the periphery of my vision at the same time while in freefall...and when I remember to do that, I don't rotate. But about the part I snipped and quoted. From what I understand, and from what my body says, the leg muscles aren't used at all...it's the contraction of the lower back and butt muscles which create the arch. If you lay flat on the floor, and then arch (not a creeper or anything elevated), you should be contracting the lower back and butt muscles, and not using the leg or arm muscles to create the arch. Try laying flat on the ground, and lifting your shoulders off the floor - without using your arms. Feel which muscles are working. Then try lifting your legs off the floor....and feel which muscles are working. Look at some of the AFF photos in the gallery and see what I'm talking about ...and then practice your arch over and over and over and over and over and over... If I understand this correctly, at our level (beginner) the legs and arms come into play to create "horizontal" (turning) stability, whereas the hips/belly/chest are what connects to the "column of air", and creating "Vertical" (up/down) stability (I know what I mean, just having a hard time articulating it). The only other piece of advice is "relax"...the moment you find you're not in control, take a deep breath, smile, and exhale...and then "rest" on the column of air... I don't have a ton of jumps, I have no ratings, and I am not an instructor. The above is simply my own understanding of "arching". Take it for what it's worth.
