Fleige, how many times have you heard "well, just how hard is it, anyway? You're falling. Anyone can fall..." The common appearance is that it's easy (they've obviously never seen me fly...). You just hop out and everything just flows from there. They don't know about the hours of freefall time trying to perfect a sit; or learning about fallrate control...or anything else. And because they don't actually know how hard it really is, they assume it's easy. They have one experience or do a little research one afternoon, and voila! They now know enough to "pose". And because they think it's easy, they have no fear about being "caught out" and publicly shamed. Mark, you have some significant points. A person who shams others is lacking self-esteem, and self respect. A person who finds the need to lie about accomplishments or whatever is someone who, for whatever reason, lacks the confidence in themselves to find their specialness and show that off. There is something unique in everyone, but it can't be polished and shined until it is identified...and wanting to be bigger/better/other than themselves is something which will get in the way of finding out who and what they are, what their contribution is, and making that contribution. Jen, all I know is that in the two years I've been jumping, I've had enormous fear. And managed to jump anyway (mostly). there were times when I just couldn't do it - and that was alright, too. I knew I'd get back into the air. It's a hard thing, this jumping business. A total unknown, and goes against everything we understand, as a whole. I mean, we're flying (or falling with attitude, in my case) our bodies through the sky, leaving the relative safety of a plane, and out into the blue we go. It's very different than anything we've ever understood...and it's the most incredible thing to do. It's hard to get our brains around it, but it can be done...I know this. I'm doing it. Slowly, to be sure, much slower than average (it would seem), but it's happening... If there is anything you need to talk through, you have my ears. Hey, Deuce? How long would it take to heal if you, knock wood, land badly - braced and all - and now need surgery? 3 months? 5? More? Or, geesh my imagination is flowing now - what if you are so concerned about protecting your ankle from re-injury and whack your head/camera/back/something else? I know about walking out with a broken ankle...I did that, no cast either...my pain tolerance was/is exceptionally high, too. But I also didn't go back into the martial arts studio until I could hop around on it without it turning colors and swelling (I didn't feel the pain...I only knew because I looked at it...)... It's your life...you'll do as you see fit regardless of my opinion...but I didn't get a hug from you last weekend, and I missed you. I don't want you to be gone for a long time... Hi, Jumprunner... Lessee...Dad is 80 1/2, walks about 10 miles a week, works long and hard hours when he works, and loves to party when he can. He is 5'11, and about 185 (carries an "old man paunch", calls it his beer belly but wonders why it's there since he doesn't drink beer). Everyone... I called his Dr today, because his dr is a family friend and I whined at the Dr. that Dad didn't call me, and tells me there's nothing to be worried about. The Dr. put Dad on the phone, and then I got back on, and Dr. told me he thinks it's partly related to the broken ribs from about a month ago...at his age, the bones are not healing as rapidly as they would for you or I, and Dr thinks that the lengthy pain medication usage *may* have contributed to a slower, lighter heartbeat and high blood pressure. According to the tests, while Dad's heart is fundamentally fine, there is a lower O2 level then Dr. would like, so they are considering doing (I don't remember the name) a procedure where they shoot irradiated (???) stuff into his veins to look for blockages. Also, they've switched the pain stuff to a lighter thing, so Dad isn't so stoned. Chuck, he is a tough ol' coot - fought in Burma/China in WW2, and has battled cancer for the last 25ish years... I will pass on all the wishes from you guys. I'm just not done being his daughter yet, you know? Dunno if I ever will be....
