This sounds scary to me. Aren't 500 skydives recommended before learning to skysurf? And it sounds here like you had fewer than 200.... To answer your rhetorical question, I think if you're a safe skydiver who's just had a lot of malfunctions, then there's no such thing as "too many" cutaways. Skydiving is for cool people only

The downside to that is you're buying gear before you really know what you're doing. I never would have bought the main I did (well-used PD 170) if I'd been educated at all about canopies. I just knew it was around the right size. I did end up with a nice container that I like and that fits like a dream. But that was pure luck. Skydiving is for cool people only

The Trib is hardly the only news outlet to have offered thorough coverage. Anyway, like I said, I'm not here to argue about whether the Trib's level of SDC coverage is good or bad. I just think it's silly and overly emotional to describe the staff of the Chicago Tribune as "hypocrites" because they didn't run an equivalent number of column inches about their errant columnist. This is not the first time a columnist has been fired for being a shithead. The Dallas Morning News got rid of one earlier this year. It happens all the time. The Trib's is about the standard response. Skydiving is for cool people only

Um, because it's a local story. The San Antonio Fiesta's a big honkin' front-page-splash-for-10-days-in-a-row deal down these parts, and I'll bet a buck you've never heard of it. The Dallas paper will run a traffic fatality that happened 50 miles away, but not 200. This seems very obvious to me. Can we just step back and look at this? Can anyone think of a reason the Trib would be unfairly singling out Skydive Chicago for mean-spirited, intentionally biased reporting? Maybe the managing editor went on a tandem and the video didn't turn out or something.

A guy who years ago had consensual sex with a woman who was, from what I understand, a legal adult, thereby violating his newspaper's ethics policies, vs. new information that Ron Passmore may have been impaired by marijuana? My God. I'm not going to argue about whether the Trib's heavy coverage of Skydive Chicago is good or bad, but comparing that story to this one is ridiculous. I'm not even sure why this was posted in the first place. Is the Trib now the sworn enemy of skydivers everywhere, and we must rejoice in the bad things that happen to it? My guess is that "beating the RSL" is in the same category as the thousand-foot snivel -- perceptions are skewed so people swear it happened, even though it really probably didn't. Congrats on your safe cutaway, Richard. Skydiving is for cool people only

I started looking for gear during AFF. I started jumping my very own stuff on skydive #13. So that means I only paid for rentals...four times, I think. Skydiving is for cool people only
