I thought so too!

WHOA!! Yes it is, but we're way into oversharing on dz.com!!

Haha! Nope, but I got a futon! Houston's a classy city. Too damp for me, though. Its closeness to the beach is really appealing, though. Actually, as much as I like Dallas, I'm considering a move to San Antonio. I'd like to go back to school and get my teaching certification, and after living in the Dallas area my whole life, it's time to spread my wings a little (but not TOO wide -- not enuf to take me out of the BEST DAMN STATE IN THE COUNTRY). The Hill Country is just beautiful, and there are tons of caves to explore and rivers to raft and live music to see and dance halls to dance in and etc.

Oops, missed this. I dunno yet -- I'm still trying to convince a girlfriend to road trip it with me. I'd really like to, though.

It's a bit alarming, but of course I am!!!

Oh! Almost forgot! We have more restaurants per capita than any other city, and some of them are GREAT. I do restaurant reviews to help support my altitude habit, and I've been to a ton. That's one big mark in favor of my cute l'il city. Also -- the traffic is not so bad. It's a lot better than say, the East Coast, or even Austin. My advice is to live pretty close to where you work -- don't live in a suburb like Plano or Richardson. Okay, maybe now I'm done.

Hiya!! Well, as mentioned, we've got SDD and SDT. If you don't have anything nice to say, my mom always said, don't say anything at all, so I won't talk about Skydive Texas. I have lots of nice things to say about Skydive Dallas, though. It is my favorite place in, perhaps, the world. It's got wonderful people, a twin otter on the weekend and a cessna caravan all week, and the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen. Now, Dallas is a pretty good city. I've lived in North Texas all my life, so I'm pretty familiar with it. The attitude is pretty yuppified, so be aware of that. On the other hand, I'm a Toyota-truck-drivin'-vegetarian-skydivin' girl, and I'm pretty happy even living in Uptown, the yuppiest area in the whole city. It actually gives me perverse pleasure to go to trendy bars wearing jeans and birkenstocks. Snowflake has given you a pretty good rundown of what there is to do here [GO UNT!!! GO EAGLES!!!!!!

The memory is a bit fuzzy, but I think I promised a bunch of people to do a naked load next time I'm out at the DZ. I think I'll do a solo, though it might be a long one -- if there's any justice, we'll get a SHITLOAD of extra altitude.

ARGH! You poor thing! Well, hope you heal up fast.

I did it! Will post a pic as soon as I get around to it. Response has been favorable (especially from the boys).

This is such a great thread!! I've learned more about canopy control and characteristics from this discussion than I think I knew in a whole year of jumping.

Well, it's a four-way skills camp, and very cheap. I could REALLY use the training. But on the other hand, $10 jumps would really help me get my jump numbers up, and maybe I could work on some two-ways. Plus SDD is having another skills camp in October. I'll tell you what -- if I can get a friend to road-trip it with me, I'll definitely come.
-
What was last year's fiasco?
-
Yes, beer. Send some of those $6 cases our way.
-
Oh my god, really? I've been planning forever to do a SDU skills camp at Skydive Dallas that weekend, but maybe I'll go to SSM instead...golly.... I loooove that otter!!

I think it's pretty common not to explain the intricacies of AADs and RSLs to students, only because instructors don't want students to depend on them, or even know that they're there in some cases. If I didn't understand skydiving, I might think, if I became unstable or disoriented, that the "automatic puller thingie" would do it for me, and not bother. You see what I mean? On my first AFF jump, not only was I not told about any of the safety equipment, but I didn't even know I would have a radio until it was slipped on me during gear-up. I think I was better for it.

LMFAO!!! I do this too! In fact, early on when I was dealing with a total on a hop n pop, I remember this thought flashed through my head: Oh hell, there are condoms lying out. The thought of my bereaved parents dealing with that mess, shaking their heads sadly, saying, "We obviously never really knew her..." as they pick their way through the filth was enough to make me locate that silver and YANK!!

Looks like the articles become available online on Aug. 14.

Good observation. I really think it comes with any pastime or job that, by its nature, makes you deal with difficult or dark things. I'm a journalist, and when golfer Payne Stewart died in that weird plane crash, we cracked ourselves up in the newsroom coming up with offensive, dark headlines. "Fairway to heaven" was a favorite, as was "Six under." Or maybe skydiving just attracts the kind of sick bastards who would find that kind of thing funny.

I read four or five books a week, I write free-lance articles (I'm working on a skydiving one now, as a matter of fact), I play the cello, I write fiction, I travel as much as I can, I'm a food critic, I'm a Stars and Mavericks fan, I'm a prodigious drinker, I try new things whenever I can.
