No Sink, I dont mind if you hate gay people or not, only that there's no difference between disobeying the word of God on the little things or the big things. Women should be silent and gay sex is against god or it's not. As far as slavery, Jesus talked about slavery a few times, used them in parables and spoke to them. I understand why the church needs to explain that the Bible is not supporting slavery, but it certainly seems very weak when compared to the text itself. We know from old testament history that God let the Hebrews keep beaten foes as slaves (when they werent being commanded to wipe out entire bloodlines). Why is this so hard for believers to admit? Jesus lived in a time where slavery was commonplace, there was no outcry because it was just an acceptable part of life. END OF STORY. Are we to assume that just because Jesus is the Messiah that he would take on 20th century social mores and condemn slavery? Yes, slavery is incompatible with the two commandments. But so is killing a fig tree because it wont bear fruit out of season, so is killing someones herd of pigs after letting them be possessed by exorcised demons. But lets not get off track here - the point is that the Church has changed its views over time, from its model of the universe, to its treatment of women, to its treatment of slavery and racism without it destroying the church or the basis of the Christian faith. How long until the church realizes that persecution based on sexual orientation is also unenlightened? The Bible is often incorrect and outdated or it is not, picking and choosing has always been the problem with using scripture to defend a prejudice. Again, why does this conflict occur over a book, a book with no more power than any other in and of itself. Can Christians stop treating it as an end unto itself, a mystic totem, and instead use it in ways that compliment their faith rather than allow it to choke and restrict it? TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

The NT mentions slavery 96 times, never in condemnation. It was simply part of life. Where is the difference between acceptance of homosexuality and women being silent? It can't be due to the amount that it's discussed in the Bible as the scripture is very clear about a woman's place in worship, whereas the scriptural defence of homophobia is far less explicit and often contradicted elsewhere, as mentioned earlier - there is at least one biblical hero who is quite obviously gay, yet God does not damn or judge him. (Sam 1:18 ->, David and Jonathan). Could it be that you dont see anything wrong with a woman's head being uncovered but you do find something morally repugnant about a man gaining sexual gratification from another man? I always found this an interesting point of view to take. I can't understand if I'm missing something (capitalism is allowed to be unethical and immoral as long as it makes a profit) or the person making the statement is (from a technical viewpoint, understanding bootloaders, unethical code tinkering, standards subversion etc). The capitalist: 'the market decides based on a variety of factors including price and quality' simply does not apply to Microsoft's growth in the usual sense. I was sure i'd posted a response to this thread.... The very short version: The Bible justifies slavery in the old testament and Jesus accepted it as part of every day society. The bible also commands women to remain silent in Church and cover their heads. The majority of fundamentalist churches that hold the Bible to be the inerrant word of God do not hold their women to this any longer. There are many other changes that we accept because as a society we have learned that the old ways are not always the best or most enlightened ways. Any church that refuses to adapt to the social mores of it's followers is doomed to obsolescence in the long term. William James covered some interesting ground in his essays in 'The Will to Believe', which covers the concepts of living and dead choices with regard to religion and belief, a live choice has some emotive appeal to the chooser. This is an internal and subjective appeal, not a rational or forced appeal. TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

Oh come now Darius, by speaking out against American troops - regardless of whether you're right or wrong - you are aiding and abetting the enemy and giving them hope! You know that by continuing to be a Muslim you're tacitly supporting those extremists. Bad Darius, bad bad bad. No beer for you this weekend! Extremist Islamic leaders are making sure your religions remains in medieval time, a good example of this is the Sudan, Afghanistan, or will you prefer to ignore (as usual) the abuses against women that took place in those areas? It always surprises me how close extreme Islam is to extreme fundamentalist Christianity. There are parallells between sexuality, gender, racism, spiritual superiority, violence, intolerance of others and general bigotry. It would take a great deal of denial to argue any differently, along with a great deal of ignorance as to the teachings of some of these extreme Christian churches. I dont do TV, I just buy seasons on DVD. Currently working through Knight Rider and Homicide, next it'll be AirWolf and maybe Magnum (since my 8 year old thought it was something else and bought it as a gift). TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

I'm going to bet that most of you have heard of Skydive Arizona, but I'm going to bet that most, if not all the posters on this thread have never skydived there...ever. I will be there shortly. I have heard the best and worst from people who have met Greg Gasson, and are not reporting based on any agenda having seen the "no parachute" trick, or the "switching planes in mid-air" trick on the Good Stuff DVD.. From what I can gather I may see both the very best and worst of Arizona skydivers - if I stay for the after parties. When I see what is happening with my own eyes, I will share what I can (without compromising anyones integrity) and not sugar coat any of it. \ I have not been, nor plan to go to 1930s Germany, Nazereth circa 4BC, India during British rule, The US during the revolutionary war, The African theatre during 1942. However, due to the miracle of technology I can learn and comment on all of these things. Now, having a time machine would be a miracle, but going to the place we're talking about is not. Now, I realize you said you didnt read the thread, but in this case going beyond the keyword 'iraq' and someone writing something vaguely negative about the war might have clued you in a little more. In this case it was about the dehumanizing of the enemy during war and evolved into whether it was racism that allowed the killing or whether the killing necessitated dehumanising the enemy - at least thats my take on it. Palm's been dead for nearly 6 years, about the same point they spun out Palmsource. Carl Yankowski mortally wounded a healthy company, although you could easily point back to an earlier time when 3com ousted the original engineering team and then infected baby Palm by dumping all their problem children into the spun off organization. Trust me, at the time of Palm's independence they were amazingly clueless and took a billion dollars and pissed it away on stupid aquisitions that generated 0 revenue. They filled out the executive ranks with a troupe of gleaming, smiling and vapid ex-Disney execs who didnt understand a damn thing about technology, and once they lost their decent engineers and thinkers to Handspring they had completely ineffective and myopic R & D. Their constant focus on issues that were no longer relevent is pretty much what killed Palm. Little things like battery life became the reason for NOT innovating, even when peoples behavior changed - in those days Palm couldnt envision their users having to charge their handhelds every day - even though the users had learned this behavior, since the introduction of the original palm, from the ubiquity of cell phones. Adopting MS software makes a great deal of sense, especially if you've ever spent any time near Palm's codebase. As for MAs decision for open standards? that makes a great deal of sense, but remains to be seen if it's serious. MS will level the playing field if they have to as they have done before. Yeah, pretty barbaric. Cultured societies tend to use poison gas, lethal injection, hanging or electric chair for their criminal killing. This is done very scientifically of course. Rather than screaming crowds we choose several witnesses who'll wear smart clothes and gaze through a glass window at the prisoner. Far more progressive, far more proper, dont you think? Not an overstatement. The feature is now present in the software. Where is this an exaggeration? Has it been officially rolled out? no. Is there code there that can perform this function if required? Yes. Do Tivos conform to new broadcast flag standards which are written by the content providing industry? Yes. Do Tivos restrict use of content by default? yes. Do tivos use Macrovision on premium content? yes. Would I recommend Tivo to anyone thinking of purchasing a PVR at this point? No. The only advantage that Tivo offered over the cable providers offerings was less control over content, with that advantage now rendered void it is a box with a pretty interface. BTW if you have a Tivo and use their desktop software: check into srcfilter and javaHMO TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

35 average skydiving deaths out of 40,000 skydivers. approx 1 in 1000. 15.5 deaths per 100000 people in traffic casualties (1999). I really dislike the 'safer than driving' argument. As a newbie to the sport it's a question that I face a lot from friends and family. I talk about mitigating risk, but also make it clear that I'm aware of the possible consequences. If they're interested I talk about the training and equipment and discuss the fact that most incidents can be traced to a series of events that are likely to involve pilot error. I am just as clear to point out that even if you do everything right there is still a not insignificant chance that something bad may occur. Yeah, I saw several reports on the exaggerations in the media. So, do we blame a news hungry media who were looking for the shocking human face of a tragedy (said with tongue only partially lodged in cheek), or the breakdown of communication and that part of society, where hysteria and rumor ran rampant along with everyones fears, because the evidence strongly pointed to everyones worst fears having come true? How ironic. I'm back from a two week 'vacation' due to that particular word and the top post I come back dedicated to it. TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

Tivo just shot themselves in the foot by bending over for the Industry and introducing a 'self destruct' to flagged content. First they introduced macrovision on the ppv stuff, now this new flag which stops transfer to your PC and auto-deletes regardless of your preferences. If I wasnt so lazy I would build my own PVR using off the shelf equipment and software...but I am, so I wont. TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

Music Downloading...where can I download LEGALLY?
AlexCrowley replied to mouth's topic in The Bonfire
Hey Jay, I know this is probably old news by now, but I just got turned on to the "allofmp3.com" website and if you're not already doin' it, it ROCKS! The IT guy at Tracie's office (who is really anal about piracy and stuff) told me he was using it and so I signed up and got a couple of albums last night...CHEAP! L Does no one read the FAQs? So, under the Russian system it's legal. Your mileage may vary. The RIAA think it's illegal and have stated so in the international press, but have yet to take any action against the site. For a lengthy discussion on the legalities of Allofmp3.com clicky TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking. -
Yeah, they're pretty basic, they sync to Ebays clock. The bidding minimum amount is actually part of Ebay's automatic bidding process. The only real danger with sniping is putting in a max amount higher than you're willing to pay, because it'll automagically go through the roof if someone is bidding the same as you. The winner is whomever got the highest first in the event of a tie. TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.
-
Seems right to me. In some catagories sniping is the only way things are bought, which is what killed ebay for me. As a seller it's weird to know that 80 people are watching your auction, then you'll get the bids in at 2 or 3 seconds before the end of the auction itself. TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.
-
I agree. Ebay when it was an auction site was great, now it's just a snipefest. Most of my friends have stopped using it, the ones that do have to snipe to win things they're interested in. Fraud is rampant in certain areas, but i'm not convinced it's any more so than normal - except it's in your face rather than the classifieds of your local paper. Fake bidders screw up high profile auctions a lot, the better run ones will automatically delete obviously fake bids as they occur rather than have them destroy the concept. I generally only bid on things I dont care if I win or lose on, if I really want an item I just use 'buy it now' on the lowest priced item I can find, from a seller thats reputable. Bidding is no longer worth the effort. Did I mention that I hate snipers? On the other hand, because I'm overly cautious about who I buy from I have never had a bad experience with buying something, that includes buying $1000+ items. In one case I got a slightly different version of an item I wanted to buy - but in my favor, and a couple of broken tubes in a guitar amp which the seller replaced with no fuss. So its kinda good, kinda bad, I think it's all down to how careful you are and what kinds of things you're going to buy. I wouldnt buy anything of value that I wasnt at least very familiar with, simply to be able to screen out the fraudsters. TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.
