Don't forget that regardless of the nifty monitors with blinky lights and piles of drugs you can push, it still all comes down to the ABCs. Don't let your head get so wrapped up in what you COULD do that you forget what you SHOULD do. Killing threads since 2004.

Lets see your tattoo, piercing or other body mods
FlyingJ replied to hcsvader's topic in The Bonfire
I feel sorry for anyone who has to maintain a certain public image. To let your career dictate who you are, how you look and behave. I am a Firefighter and Paramedic, and will not let anyone dictate to me how i can and cannot look. In my eyes, if I am willing to risk MY life to run into a burning building to save YOU and YOUR stuff, you have absolutely no right to dictate how i should look(as long as there is no safety risk). So is that going to be your answer when you apply for a different job and are told you would have to cover up, or when your agency changes the rules on the books? Think it won't happen? Look at Los Angeles. I work for an EMS agency that has grandfathered in some folks with visible tattoos but in order to be hired now you must be able to cover any visible tattoos 24/7 while on duty. If you don't know already, you would be surprised to see how many fire/ems agencies have a no visible tattoo rule on the books. Why? Because public image dictates it. I am in no way judging you on the fact that you have tattoos, just on your position on the role that public image plays. I wish that public image didn't play the role it does, but unfortunately it doesn't matter what you think about yourself, what matters is what others think of you. I highly doubt it is the dude watching you put out the fire in his house that is going to complain. It's the little old lady who calls 911 in the middle of the night because she has abdominal pain and can't sleep and wants a ride to the hospital. It's the same little old lady who will sit down and write letters or call council members, etc. saying that the fire department is filled with dirty tattooed misfits and can't they hire some clean young folks. Are you a dirty misfit? No, probably not, but right or wrong, that's her impression of you. That lady is your customer. Assuming your agency is similar to every other one in the country, I imagine you run a heck of a lot more old lady with a tummy ache calls than house fires, and it's those old ladies paying the bills and keeping the lights on and the trucks fueled. These old ladies, the ones calling 911 when if they had just farted a few times they would have been just fine, are the customer, and the customer needs to be happy. The last thing any elected official wants is the public complaining about something. Next step, rules on the books stating no visible tattoos so old ladies won't complain about dirty misfits again. Is it all absurd? Mostly, and I agree with you that it shouldn't matter, but unfortunately it's life. I have no idea where you work, but I presume you enjoy it there. Based on your statement above I expect that you would turn in your two week notice if your agency added a no visible tattoos rule to the books? Edit to add: same story w/ piercings. In fact, for your average 65 to 85 year old customer, having a bunch of metal in your face is probably quite a bit more in their face than a bunch of tattoos. And you better bet that there has been a grandma or two that would like to know what that split tongue was capable of! Killing threads since 2004. -
I've had to ship my 870 back to Remington twice. Both times it went by either USPS or UPS, totally within regulations and with full knowledge by those accepting the package what was being shipped. Use an FFL if it makes you feel more comfortable and you have someone you care to use, but it's not necessary as it is with some other firearms. Killing threads since 2004.

Your description makes me miss my barber in NYC. I cut my own hair (#1 clipper cut) from 2nd grade until age 24. I was in a rush one day and stopped into a barber shop and had it cut by Juan "Johnny" Diaz (Columbus btw 58th an 60th). I fell in love with the hot shave and straight razor. I was broke and paying for haircuts every two weeks that I had done myself for 15 years, but it was worth it just for the atmosphere. That went on for 3 years until I moved away from NYC and I haven't paid for a cut since then. The best part about it was all the neighborhood folks that would stop in to say hello. He had people that had been his customers for 30 or 40 years who were now bringing grand and great grand kids for their hair cuts. Killing threads since 2004.

I've admittedly never used Mapsource as I always used DNR Garmin for transfering data, but when I did look recently I didn't see an option for saving data as a shapefile I could email to someone to use in ArcMap. If you (or anyone else!) knows how to do that in Mapsource I'd be a happy camper since I already have the software! Killing threads since 2004.

Doesn't this result in me having a limit of 4gb or something like that? I seem to remember trying this previously and my several hundred gb drive was only good for a fraction of the total. Again, only know enough to screw things up, so hopefully my memory is faulty. Thanks for the website suggestion. Killing threads since 2004.

I'm in the market for a new external hard drive and am wondering if it is possible to set one up to be hot swappable between a Mac and a PC. The primary purpose of the drive will be storage of all of my pics, videos, etc., but I would like to be able to go back and forth between platforms if possible. I generally know just enough about this kind of stuff to screw it up and cause myself more trouble than it's worth, so I appreciate the input of those that know and understand far more than me. I also appreciate the input from those that are just like me and don't really know but go ahead and reply anyway. I know you mean well! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Killing threads since 2004.

I use the heck out of Pocket Universe. Want to say it was $1.99 or $2.99 but well worth it in my opinion. Pulls up a map of the nighttime sky and you can either drag it around or activate the motion sensitive feature and just point it where you are looking. It displays the names of everything in the sky and draws the constellations in for you. For many features you can click on a link to read more about that feature. You can also view "Tonight's Sky" and it will give you a list of features currently visible and you can have it point you in the right direction to see them. An amazing program for someone both interested and clueless about astronomy. I've laid down on the ground out in the Davis Mountains in West Texas and spent hours with it. Killing threads since 2004.

Hi all, I'm working on downloading a pile of waypoints off my Garmin Map60CS gps unit to save as a shape file so it can be opened and used in ArcMap. I've used DNRGarmin for years but for some reason the working relationship between my GPS and DNR Garmin has ceased to be cordial and none of my computers loaded with the software will recognize my GPS. Anyone know of some other free software out there that will allow me to download the data and save it as shapefiles? I've found several that will store everything for you, etc. and allow you to download and upload points, routes all within the pretty little program, but none of them allow me to save the raw data. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving! jason Killing threads since 2004.

Make sure to check out ebay. I was able to find one (Nuvi360 I think) that was top of the line a couple years back for the same price as bottom of the line units being sold in stores. With Garmin you have the option of paying for individual updates when you choose, or buying a lifetime subscription that gives you up to 4 updates per year. The subscription is well worth it. Try Blue Cross Blue Shield. A few years back even their cheapest plans (I think I was paying $85 or so per month) did not exclude skydiving. Killing threads since 2004.

NO! Especially not when you are talking about a career that ALSO requires a certain amount of "currency" to continue. You've already invested in that, tough it out, finish, get a great job as a nurse that pays you well. Depending on what kind of nursing you want to go into you might even find something with the kind of schedule that not only pays you well but gives you ample daytime hours for jumping! I did something similar to what you are talking about. It was awesome, I had a stash of money that was meant for other purposes but did one jump and loved it. I did AFF followed by another 50 jumps or so in a very short time and then that pot of money ran out. Then not only did I not have the money to skydive, but I also no longer had the money to use for it's intended purpose. In your case, not only would you end up depleting your loan money eventually, but you would then be paying the loan money back ON TOP of trying to come up with the money to continue jumping. Priorities, regardless of how much they suck, are important. Get the career going and put yourself in a position to CONTINUE in the sport before you START in the sport! Of course, you could sell everything you own, buy a camper, move to the dz and pack for a living too. Killing threads since 2004.

Hey stranger... That sure was an ugly loss yesterday. Mixed emotions about wanting GA to win. Obviously there is nothing better than beating the Gators, but I really didn't want to see a far inferior Georgia team responsible for sending an SEC team cartwheeling from the top of the polls. Can't route for the Gators or my family will disown me, but GO SEC!!! Killing threads since 2004.

I'm extremely uninformed in regard to the costs involved with a life sentence vs. death sentence/execution. My initial opinion upon reading the question would have been "I sure as hell don't want to pay for them to take care of the guy for the next 50 or 60 years" but I'm intrigued to learn about the difference in cost for keeping a prisoner vs. killing one. Is it primarily the time spent in court during appeals, etc. that raises the cost or is there something else involved with a death sentence and execution that raises the costs so significantly? I thought this was pretty funny so I copied and texted it to a bunch of friends and family. Well in addition to the joke itself they've had a grand ole time inquiring about the "mr. right" I mention that I havyet to find. Note to self...consider slightly editing content in the future before sending! Killing threads since 2004.

BlackBerry versus iPhone (which platform is better, etc)
FlyingJ replied to mdrejhon's topic in The Bonfire
I don't really know enough to know what limitations are manufacturer based vs. carrier based, but the fact that the iphone does not recognize Flash and only recently began allowing picture text messages is inexcusable to me. While I'm extremely happy to have the MMS messaging now (which I believe was limited by AT&T) I'm still in disbelief that it wasn't included from the beginning. Freakin $14 "Go Phones" from walmart can send MMS messages for cryin' out loud! In a world where so much of what is on the web is flash based someone needs a stick shoved up their butt until the no flash fiasco is fixed! Killing threads since 2004. -
It's all in perspective. When I moved to cincinnati from Georgia it felt like I was moving to the great white north. On my first day of classes my TA (from the upper peninsula of Michigan) mentioned how odd it felt to be living in the deep south. From our own perspectives we were both right. There are certainly southern areas of Florida (specifically the panhandle and lots of north/north central Florida) but in my experience living there for awhile, the closer you got to the beach or mickey, the more 100% northern transplant it became. South Florida is a whole different country. I'll admit my impression is based on only two years living there, however in those two years I spent time working in everyone of the 130 or so state parks so I saw a pretty good cross-section. So where's the real line? The VA/NC and KY/TN state lines? I don't know if you can exclude Kentucky. I think a lot of people would like to, but I'm pretty sure most folks would have to accept KY as being in the south. Might not always feel like it coming from further south, but when I went to college in Cincinnati I couldn't believe the difference just crossing the Ohio river into KY. The real test came when comparing Waffle Houses. In Ohio I was dissapointed to find a clean place with well mannered guests and waitstaff with all their teeth. In KY I felt much more at home walking into the place where your feet stuck to the floor in the middle of a domestic dispute between a waitress and her ex, during which she ran back into the restaurant to grab more plates and glasses to throw at him as he drove away in her conversion van with a window unit A/C mounted through the back door. Scattered, covered, smothered and chunked, all with a side of good redneck festivities. Damn I miss that place here in Texas! Killing threads since 2004.
