I said NOTHING of swooping. This is for those that don't know what the rock point is. What I said makes perfect sense. You might not understand it but the principal is sound. And I am in fact correct. Thanks for the help Quade. The plane thing was more for visual than anything. AGAIN, I wasn't talking about THE FLARE. I am specifically explaining what the rock point is. Start a flare thread if you want to and try and stay on the topic. Maybe we are finding out you don't even know what the rock point is. The rock point is maybe 1/20th of the flare process. It is something that you pass during the flare. It wasn't the best example but effective for visual sake. Rhino

Bouncing was good for me actually. Slowed me down and smartened me up. Video wouldn't have done anything I don't think. Rhino

This is my brief explanation of the rock point under canopy. A couple of people PM'd me asking what I was talking about. If anyone "Hook" has a better way to describe it post away. The rock point, It is the point during the flare that you have swung directly under canopy. Where you have entered the slow speed flight of your canopies airfoil. At your rock point your descent has ceased and you are just moving forward bleeding off airspeed. Does that make sense? Weight wise under canopy you have shifted slightly in front of your canopies center of gravity allowing the canopy essentially to canter upwards acting as a brake and slowing down. In an airliner. When the plane slows down, flaps drop. The moment that nose starts to point above the horizon with the plane still flying straight and level could be considered the rock point. That is when the energy of your wing becomes most important, the lift and speed. Your canopy is just like an airplane wing. You slow down, start to apply flaps "toggles" cantering the nose of your canopy upwards while still flying straight and level slowly applying more flaps "toggles" nose rising even more until the stall point of the canopy "where your feet should touch the ground". Rule #1.. If you wouldn't want to land there don't fly over it. Get over your intended landing spot and s-turn down traffic permitting. Not only will this increase your forward speed but it will get you out of the wind faster and give you more energy on landing. Rhino

The last thing you should do is worry under a Triathlon. You can sink that canopy between branches in trees if you have to. That is an excellent canopy.

understood.. Lengthen AFF to 20 jumps. Make the last 10 canopy control and only canopy control. Make them demonstrate slow speed flight, flat turns, things that will save their ass. Make them clear and pulls from 12k. That is what I mean. Rhino

Maybe they were taught to flare but they certainly didn't pay attention to WHY you flare or HOW you flare. Knowing why and how makes landings much easier. Rhino

Wrong... Getting them aware of canopy flight from day one will prevent future hook ins.. I don't listen to everyone. Especially where canopy flight is concerned. I listen to people that are where I want to be. That is a basic principal of success.. Rhino

I have yet to see anyone that does to be honest. Although I am getting MANY people really interested in hop-n-pops from over 12,000 feet these days.. Far from it.. For most what I am doing seems like suicide. I wouldn't recommend it for ANYONE that hasn't done their homework. Not sure. Don't know if I would have kept jumping to be honest. High performance canopy flight brought skydiving alive for me again. It is a whole new, exciting aspect of skydiving requiring exceptional skill, practice, research, patience and judgement. It was a challenge, it is a challenge. The speed is fantastic! What the parachute can do is amazing. I like to challenge myself. It is a constant test of my own judgement and skill. With 2 kids and one on the way I have no intention of doing anything stupid. Am I willing to accept the risks involved? Absolutely. No way in hell.. Some people have it and some people don't? If that makes sense. Some people at 2000 jumps have yet to learn to fly a canopy. Canopy flight basic things such as "below" should be taught in AFF. recovery arc rock point slow speed flight flat turns flying in rear risers front riser dives to get out of wind These are just some of the things that should be taught in AFF. I have plans to be an AFF jm someday and when I do I will be teaching exactly what I am preaching. Rhino
