As I recall hearing last night - Ohio had provisional ballots in 2000, and about 90% of them were judged legitimate. Even at 90%, though, its a lost cause. Kerry needs to cowboy up and concede gracefully. At least Al Gore had a legitimate shot at his endless recounts affecting the outcome. Going to the provisionals is a self-absorbed exercise in futility that just delays the closure this country needs. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Unfortunately, that tide isn't confined to the other side of the pond. The omnipresent nanny-state is gathering force over here just as rapidly. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Methinks Mr. Quade is trying to goad some of the local conservatives into getting themselves banned. Cute. You are more than welcome to take your voting cues from Osama. You are living in a dreamworld. OBL is going to say whatever he thinks will win him points. Congratulations for being among the most easily manipulated. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

How come oil companies are reaping record profits?
ahegeman replied to PhillyKev's topic in Speakers Corner
Good for them. They have a right to control their production. They built the facilities. If you don't like it, start your own oil company. Or don't use gas. Oh, petroleum is vital to our economy and without it mankind would be still living in huts. So thank them for helping make nearly everything we have possible. And buy some stock. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry -

Not a CReW dog, or even puppy, yet, but its a discipline I want to get into. I was thinking about equipment and wondered why there aren't any airlocked crew canopies. Are there even any square airlocked canopies out there? Wouldn't their greater ability to stay inflated make them less likely to collapse/wrap? What am I missing here? I don't think I've put two and two together before any of the thousands of skydivers before me, just that I can learn something from the answer. Thanks. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Non-lethal weapons AND sports assholes...
ahegeman replied to TypicalFish's topic in Speakers Corner
I see. Well, since we're not trying to keep this thread focused on the original post anymore, then, yes, of course it is not newsworthy. Boring stories of success don't sell advertising time. Bring on the gore! Yes, baseball fans in the US not being killed by the cops is just like Iraqi families no longer being dumped into mass graves. That's almost as good of an analogy as comparing the terrorists who murder children with car bombs at sewage treatment plant openings to the Israeli soldiers who inflict collateral damage during targeted killings of Islamic Jihad leaders. For the record, I agree with your point about newsworthiness, I just think your analogies leave a lot to be desired. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry -

Word. I'm a hunter, falconer, and I grew up on a small farm. I've killed more than my share of animals. I went to a bullfight in Mexico and nearly vomited. It was the most disgusting, pathetic display of cruelty and machismo I've ever had the misfortune to witness. At the fight I saw them kill 3 bulls. I noticed that after the little guys with the barbed little short spears that hang off the shoulders and the picadors were done, the matador would finally come out only after the bull had already stumbled once from loss of blood. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Unbelievable. That's what the irony I was referring to is. Again, that was my point. I mention black helicopters, a favorite of conspiracy theorists everywhere, and you think I'm being serious with that line. My mother left a place where those types of comments get you thrown in jail or worse. That doesn't happen here - because its not treason, and the President, as much of an asshole as he is, is not a dictator in any way, shape, or form. Obviously, criticizing the president is not treason. I wasn't talking about criticizing the president, I was talking about calling him a dictator. You'll note there was no real criticism in the posts I referenced, just lame attempts to compare him to someone who truly is a threat to freedom. Given the conditions that billions in this world live under, and given how good we've got it here, calling Bush any kind of dictator certainly isn't treason, but it is willfully ignorant of reality. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Good for you. That was my point. I'm no fan of W, but to compare him to people like Putin, and refer to him as any kind of dictator is to make a mockery of those who live in REAL tyrannies. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

You two should thank your good fortune that your lives are so sheltered and spoiled that you have the luxury of getting away with being obtuse enough to compare W to Putin, and call him a fascist dictator wannabe. Sure, he's no ACLU poster-boy, but he hardly approaches that level. Give me a call when the black helicopters come for you for your acts of treason and sedition in your posts. Irony, anyone? As someone who's family escaped to America from Cuba I would find that level of intellectual laziness offensive if it wasn't so damn funny. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

I never heard anything about the government subsidizing the laying of fiber, except to get the companies to lay fiber where they otherwise wouldn't want to bother. Got a source on that? What exactly does doing "the nice guy shit" mean? Whenever I see a man fixating on the fact that he thinks he was a "nice guy", he was really just being a total wimp. That'll get you 0 points. If you have to call it doing "the nice guy shit" that just means you weren't being true to yourself, and they'll sniff that out every time. Be a man. Be yourself. No doubt, I went through the same thing - after every one of my first 20 or so jumps after the adrenaline rush wore off I would make excuses to myself and my instructors about why I didn't need to manifest again as soon as possible. Now you couldn't keep me off that plane with a chain and a tree stump. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Force to deploy reserve, Small girl
ahegeman replied to Lostinspace's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Ask a rigger around there if there are any rigs going out of date, especially the student gear, and if you could pull the reserve handle on it before the repack. If nothing else, it'll give you some confidence. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry -
No, dude. Fewer students = fewer teachers needed for the same student/teacher ratio. As an aside, though - I'll take a good, dedicated, and experienced teacher with 40 students over a jackass with 20 any day. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
