True, but where will they bury the survivors? --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Now why you gotta go and insult our (dz.com) liberals, when they obviously don't agree? Shouldn't we all treasure the few times we can agree on something? --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Let me tell you what I do understand. My generation will never see a red cent of their SS payments, but will be paying for the retirements of the previous generations, not too mention paying on the debt they've accumulated from their orgy of spending on anything and everything. So explain that to me then, smart guy. That'd really piss me off if I was paying into the SS system. Thank God I'm not. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

You may have been paying enough into SS itself, but that's a meaningless distinction as government funding is really all fungible, and its the boomers who've elected politicians for making the unsustainable promises which required the raiding of the Social Security funds in the first place. And the problem isn't the tax cut, its that the government spends too much fucking money in the first place. I thought you were an anarchist. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Obviously not enough. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

He can't. Nobody really expects him to. I sure as hell don't. But if he'd said he'd reduce benefits, raise the retirement age, or increase payroll taxes, which are pretty much the only things that'll actually fix the problem, he'd have lost the election to someone making the exact same lies. Not exactly sterling leadership, but the American people don't want real leadership when it comes to their entitlements, they want promises and bullshit. We will simply have to wait until the system collapses. That's a cop out. Lame. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Ask me if I care. No matter what, someone's gonna get screwed, might as well be the fuck-ups who caused the problem. Just one suggestion. Didn't quite have time for a treatise. Especially since I don't pay into or expect to get anything out of Social Security. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

I've always liked the idea of tieing the inflation of SS payouts to cost inflation rather than wage inflation. Its not a "cut" in benefits, as it maintains current buying power, but it slows the growth. That would go a long way towards helping. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

U.S. Supreme Court rejects challenge by KKK
ahegeman replied to IanHarrop's topic in Speakers Corner
Our perspectives may be different given that many of us consider high levels of taxation to be an infringement on civil liberties, as are gun laws, hate speech laws, and huge, unaccountable meta-states, such as the EU. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry -
John Desantis/Michael Hawkes lawsuit
ahegeman replied to peek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Uhg . . . checked rec-dot . . . that was no fun. Can somebody please explain to me what Desantis was trying to accomplish? I'm trying to be open-minded here, but it seems pretty indefensible. If the dz had lost, it could have been disastrous for the sport. What exactly was in those documents besides the incident reports? Edit: Thanks Lori, that helped some more. I didn't find it earlier because I only searched on Desantis' name. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry -
U.S. Supreme Court rejects challenge by KKK
ahegeman replied to IanHarrop's topic in Speakers Corner
For those that know history, they'll know that the slide down this slipperly slope was really kicked into high gear while Abe Lincoln was in office. If you don't know about this, brush up on your history outside of the glossy grade-school version. Very scary things were done to civil liberties during his "reign." Yes, I am well aware of the suspension of Habeas Corpus, etc. My comments about "The People" are not limited to "The People" of today, and it certainly wasn't a shot at W, if that is what you are thinking I meant. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry -
U.S. Supreme Court rejects challenge by KKK
ahegeman replied to IanHarrop's topic in Speakers Corner
For once, I agree wholeheartedly. Civil liberties in this country are, while better than anywhere else in the world, a joke. The Founders must be spinning in their graves. It has been this way for a long time, and we, The People, have only ourselves to blame. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry -
John Desantis/Michael Hawkes lawsuit
ahegeman replied to peek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Would someone care to update us new jumpers on what the lawsuit was about? I've serched the forums for Desantis' name and can only surmise that he happily turned a bunch of documents over to someone suing a DZ, then was paid to testify against said DZ. What was the issue, what did the documents say, why shouldn't he have had them etc.? --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry -
Yeah, he likes to pose. Nowadays, its the sport of people who don't mind crawling around in the dirt and getting their skin shredded by heavy brush. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

You are a falconer, eh? Yes, that is rare among women. What kind of bird do you fly? You presume quite a bit. I assure you that is not a fake. Why is that so difficult for you to believe? As a falconer, you should know that every raptor fledges at between about 4-8 weeks of age and is fully capable of hunting on its own at that point. What makes you think Jazz is less than 6 weeks old in that picture? He's certainly not downy. In my country I am not allowed to own a falcon either. The state owns them, I merely have a license to possess him, so I guess you are right about that. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Well done, you are correct on both counts. He's not a falcon, he's a red-tailed hawk - a very common bird over here in the States. And yes, he was young when that picture was taken, still in his immature plumage. He's almost a year older now. Here's a more recent picture. Am I interpreting your emoticons correctly to say that you don't think too highly of the sport? --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
-
Well, that's me in the picture, with my bird Jazz, and a rabbit he just caught, so it would appear that I am.

Cool - can I bring my bird over? I'll bet those squirrels aren't that fast. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Surely you jest. Why? I believe the government should butt out of the peoples' lives to the greatest extent possible. Then you're the first anarchist I've ever heard of advocating gun control and saying people shouldn't be able to smoke in bars. Do you believe in public education? Any sort of welfare? Income taxes? Regulation of industry? --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

The batteries on my hawk's transmitters last two years, and the signal goes 10 miles line of sight. I've thought about having them put on my freebag and main somehow, but its pretty open around Skydive Dallas. Besides, would a rigger do that? Is it TSO friendly? Could it potentially screw up reserve packing or deployment? I dunno about such things. Cost/benefit may not work out too well on it, either. What are the odds of actually losing your main so badly that you'd have to have telemetry to find it? My transmitter is nearly $200 and the directional receiver set-up is at least $500. Since I already have the transmitters and receiver for my falconry, and don't fly the bird during the summer, its all a sunk cost for me. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Scary! Another step to destroy your freedom! (not a gun thread)

[sarcasm] But Dave, the founding fathers could never have envisioned the printing technology we have now. All the new high-powered printers, capable of fully automatically spewing out sheet after sheet of incredibly detailed images. Normal people don't need that kind of printing power.
