Phat vs. Skinny, or Perceived performance
BlindBrick replied to yuri_base's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Yuri, could you scale that to 330 lbs and assume a Prodigy? I have this feeling I won't so much glide as plummet with style! -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it." -
Unfortunately 5 point seats aren't a panecea. My son was killed on septermber 30th in one. He neck was snapped and his legs were crushed when the car he was in was rear ended, shoving the rear seat into the back of the front seats. If you have have only one child, I can not highly enough recommend placing the car seat in the middle of the rear seat, rather than to one side. It's more work getting the child in and out, but it can save their life. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

I was at Wal-MArt one day and found a foam, 2 channel B-2 Spirit on sale for $35. I picked it up and have made pretty much all the common beginner rookie mistakes with it(as a side, it's just sick and wrong when a 296 lbs man has to climb thirty feet up a tree to get his toy ) I'm feelng pretty confident but am fustrated by it's limited manuverability. What'd be a good next step? -blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

I was asked to repack a reserve and I found that the left reserve risers have been chewed up pretty good by the RSL velcro. The pics I've included aren't the best, so let me say that the damage is to the point that there is no longer any black webbing to the outside of the colored thread on one side of the riser. Also catching my attention is the dimpling in the riser. I've seen RSL velcro damage before, but never the dimpling. This repack comes from a terminal reserve ride. I'm wondering if the dimpling is a result of the webbing taking the shock load unevenly due to the damage to the weave? A sort of partial failure? My gut instinct is that this is more than cosmetic and the rig should be tagged as unairworthy, but I'd appreciate the opinions of riggers with more experience. -Blind [edited to put up pic instead of just links to them] "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

Replace Reseve after 10 repacks...............
BlindBrick replied to buzi's topic in Gear and Rigging
Somewhere in Poynter's it mentions that a test has indicated that repacking increases the porosity of reserves. On some of the test canopies, after 12 repacks, porosity increased to the point that the canopies no longer met spec as reserves. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it." -
Beginner training at Z-hills x-mas boogie?
BlindBrick replied to BlindBrick's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Will there be anyone teaching beginners or is it just for more advanced wingsuit flyers? -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it." -
Is it wrong to give forgiveness to those who kill your children?
BlindBrick replied to BlindBrick's topic in The Bonfire
The car my son was in had slowed for the car in front of it to turn. They were struck from behind by the other driver who hadn't realized that the cars had slowed down. The speed limit on that stretch of highway is 70 and the car my son was in is an Impala which have poor rear impact ratings. Just a big combination of bad things. I am angry at the driver, but I've almost ran up on people like that numerous times. It could have just have easily been me in another time and place. I don't know if the DA will press charges or not, but if thye choose to and she wasn't drunk or grossly negligent, I can't see ruining her family to avenge mine. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it." -

BlindBrick replied to BlindBrick's topic in The Bonfire
Saturday night, my 2 and a half year old son was killed in an auto crash. There's no idinidcation that the driver who struck the carhe was riding in was drunk or acting in a grossly negligent way. It simply appears to be a horrible accident. My family is looking at me like I'm crazy because I've told them that if the DA presses charges, I'd ask the judge to be as lenient as possible so as not to destroy another family. Sending this woman to jail will not raise my son from the dead, it will only generate more grief. But I seem to be the only that sees that. Am I wrong to feel that way? -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it." -
Safire II recovery arc at 1.4-1.45
BlindBrick replied to BlindBrick's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I'm headed out to te dz now to verify, but last I looked, I still have plenty of slack in the brake lines. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it." -
Safire II recovery arc at 1.4-1.45
BlindBrick replied to BlindBrick's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
~1200 msl and temps in the lower 90's (F) with density altitudes between 2500-3100. The reason I was asking is that I'm considering demo'ing a smaller canopy but my main objective is a a less positive recovery arc. I don't want to spend money on the demo if the arc is going to be very similar. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it." -
Safire II recovery arc at 1.4-1.45
BlindBrick replied to BlindBrick's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Can anybody tell me what the recovery arc on a Saifre II at the 1.4 WL is like? I've been experimenting with risers(up high) with a 269 at 1.3, and it feels like the canopy is actually gaining a small bit of altitude once I release the riser. I was wondering if at 1.4 there was still that tendancy. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it." -
Actually one of the big three networks did a special on this a long time ago. They simply use a pistol shot to the back of the head. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

I'd be weary of a canopy that could go up in smoke at any second. Also, isn't WL an issue. I mean you get hungry after avery jump... -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

That's an intersting thing to say on a skydiving website. I think we all have the ability to impact the world... t Finally someone who gets it. You wouldn't believe the number of blank looks I get when I point out that the vast majority of all skydiving deaths occur on the ground. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

He was a pioneer carrying out important high altitude research for the space program. Someone had to do the jumps and he led from the front. In short, I think he's an absolute legend If you talk to some of the jumpers that worked with the program, they tell a much different story. According to several of them, Kittenger was selected soley off him being an officer. Their version of the story has a couple of enlisted jumpers with high hundreds of jumps being passed over just because they were enlisted. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

It has something to do with the dense air trapped in the cells. And it takes a certain amount of it. Conversations with our pilots and the local ATC seem to indicate that you need a 260+ sf canopy to generate a return. I'm calling Bullshit on that one!. The dense air comes from someone on here saying that that's how wx radar sees stuff. I do know that the ATC guys can't see us in freefall but as soon as a large canopy opens, they know it. Now for students, I'd give you the metal in the spring-loaded PC. But my 269 sf shows up just fine and due to my set up, I have less metal exposed upon deployment than the smaller canopies that the radar can not see at all.. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

I'm looking to get ahold of jumper Loren L. Coleman. I don't know his home dz, but he lives in the Greater Seatlle area. If some one could ask him to drop me a PM, I'd sure appreciate it. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

Let me dig through my gear closet. I can't remember if I used the main or reserve when I went BASE jumping. If I took the main instead of the reserve, then I have an MT-1 with very few jumps that I'd be willing to part with cheaply if it was going to help get another anvil brother into the air. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
-
At, If you are talking about the MT-1 rig, what do you need? The only thing I need to have a full MT-1 system is bags and PC's. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

Dude, my exit weight is very, very near the R-Max 288's max weight. So when I say ultra anvil it is not a case of "them" but rather "us".

Contrary to popular belief, TSO23D does not end at 300 lbs. It's just that the cost of certifying to a higher weight is usually not justifiable based on the small number of ultra-anvils who might purchase the gear. As for getting a rig together with stockcomponents: Start with a container that's TSO'd under 23B which has an "unlimited" weight limit and then go for an 23D reserve rated above 300 lbs. You get a real bonus here as the on the shelf rigs which will hold that big of a reserve are almost always configured as student rigs which would mean getting them ready for AFF would be a relatively simple undertaking. Finally, looking at mains, you're choices are admittedly limited. I think Icarus will upsize their student 7 cell above 300 sf. Plus you have MT-1's and Firebolt 350's. I know I can shoehorn in a MT-1 into my RTS M-8, so an M10 should have no problems accomodating one. My personal setup is a RTS m-8, Safire II 269 and a R-Max 288. Granted the Safire II is a little small for a big student but otherwise the setup is solid for a beginner. Another option if you want to buy new is to look at Jump Shack. IIRC, the Racer is a 23 B rig, and their Angel Fire 300 reserve is rated to 330 lbs. Stick a Firebolt 350 or 396 in there and you have one stop shopping and probably a discount for purchasing it all from one manufactuer. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."

feel free to PM me too. At 320 exit, you are right on the threshold and might be able to use stock components for the majority of your rig. -Blind "If you end up in an alligator's jaws, naked, you probably did something to deserve it."
