And last but not the least, visualize hard. Quote That last bit that Anton said right there is absolutely priceless IMO, I started out flying OC on a AA team, got a whole bunch of tunnel time in that slot and flying there rarely, if ever, did I get to see what the tail was doing. So when I moved to the Tail slot I had absolutely no experience or knowledge of what went on back there but I managed to keep nearly the same pace because when I made the switch I spent hours and hours visualizing working everything from the back piece, the mental aspect of flying Tail just clicked, and I think that made a big difference in the short amount of time it took for my flying to catch back up. Overall personally I think if you keep your flying sharp, even if its not by doing 4 way with your team, and do a lot of mental work in all the slots you should be able to keep pace fairly well. Please do take my opinion with a grain of salt though as I have little actual team experience, most of my 4 way has been done in tunnel camps, doing 4 way on a consistent basis isn't something that comes easy in Colorado, especially when you travel for work non-stop good luck History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. Also another feature on the tony suits is the new ballistic material for the booties, I saw it on Airspeed's jumpsuits, and it's stiff as cardboard. It's been a while since I read the SCM but doesn't it state that teams are authorized a second pass if they feel it is in the best interest of safety? History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower

Thanks to everyone for remembering, we often times feel we are under appreciated or forgotten about, but it usually isn't long before someone comes along and reminds us that that isn't case and something as simple as a thank you means the world to a service member. I actually think the best thing I've ever gotten was a stack of letters from some third graders when I was in Iraq, those kids were the best. Of all the letters I read my favorite one was from a little boy wo wrote "Dear soldier thank you for fighting the war for me, you must be doing a good job because no bombs have hit my house yet." You gotta love kids. History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower

I think he forgot to put "between" in front of the 3... of course, that assumes it's a dropped grenade, since throwing it could take a couple of that 3-5 seconds... Quote And don't forget as I mentioned earlier that there is the chance it was cooked off. I never toss a grenade without cooking it off first, eliminates the chance of it being thrown back. My dear Lucky, do you really forget so quickly? A mere 4 days ago your argument was shut down in another thread, yet you come in here just looking for another excuse to call soldiers stupid and uneducated claiming that everyone elses argument has no ground because it is too small of a sample group. Well you're doing much the same thing when you call all soldiers less educated, I'm sorry if that was the case for YOU when you joined, but using only your own intelligence level at the time of enlistment doesn't constitute a sample of the whole military. Here let me refresh your memory a bit as to what was said to disprove your theory earlier, Lucky's Argument I personally love the paragraph at the end talking about whose accomplishments(the soldiers or a quitter's) will be remembered by society in years to come. Pulled this off of myspace and damn near fell out of my chair laughing at it Reassurance for those of us who fly routinely in our jobs. After every flight, Quantas pilots fill out a form, called a "gripe sheet," which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some maint enance complaints submitted by Qantas' pilots (marked with a P) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S) by maintenance engineers. By the way, Quantas is the only major airline that has never, ever, had an accident. P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement. S: Almost replaced left inside main tire. P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough. S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft. P: Something loose in cockpit. S: Something tightened in cockpit. P: Dead bugs on windshield. S: Live bugs on back-order. P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent. S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground. P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear. S: Evidence removed. P: DME volume unbelievably loud. S: DME volume set to more believable level. P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick. S: That's what friction locks are for. P: IFF inoperative in OFF mode. S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode. P: Suspected crack in windshield. S: Suspect you're right. P: Number 3 engine missing. S: Engine found on right wing after brief search. P: Aircraft handles funny. (I love this one!) S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right, and be serious. P: Target radar hums. I hate people who drive like they are scared, I don't drive overly-agressive, but I do drive like I have somewhere to be, I don't cut people off, but when there's an opening I don't sit there staring at it like I'm scared to merge. Defensive driving makes the road even more dangerous IMO, if 99 percent of drivers aren't defensive than the one guy who is being excessively careful is making it more dangrous for everyone else. grow a pair and drive History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. National Guardsman overlooked for Medal Of Honor

I have never heard anyone "romanticize" jumping on a frag, but actions such as this are commonly looked upon as brave. I didn't give exact details of the account but from the reports I saw it wasn't like you said, where everyone had plenty of time to run, obviously someone was close enough to see the soldier intentionally cover the grenade with his body, also it was stated that he first tried to grab it and throw it out of the vehicle. Think about it though, you throw a grenade, about one second in the air, it lands in the vehicle and bounces around, another half second to a second. the times it takes the vehicle to stop(I seem to remember reading that the vehicle WAS moving) well over one second. So the people in the vehicle were getting out within fractions of a second of the renade going off. The soldier had the choice to run with his teammates but they were still close enough to get injured or worse so he opted to give his life to spare theirs. You are not accepting certain death to avoid the possibility of dying, you are ensuring your friends will return home alive. It's like charging an ambush line to draw fire away from a wounded teammate, or a Secret Service agent taking a round for the President. By all means teach the soldiers you are responsible for to react by throwing it back or seeking cover, but telling them not to put their teammates lives ahead of their own is the absolute wrong answer. Also when a grenade lands next to you there is no knowing if it was cooked off or not, last I check they don't have visible timers, so it's an instantaneous decision, myself, my fellow soldiers. Also, you're absolutely right about that SF NCO in your story, nothing but balls. But who are you to say that it is any more brave than anyone else who jumped on a frag to save their team mate. They are all hero's in every sense of the word, no more no less. History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower -

Wow, I think $25,000 per year served is a pretty raw deal when you consider the mental trauma/humiliation/loss of freedom for all those years. I feel really sorry for the guy. National Guardsman overlooked for Medal Of Honor
GQ_jumper replied to GQ_jumper's topic in Speakers Corner
The thread about the Marine who will be posthumously awarded the MOH reminded me of a story I recently read in the Army Times. I just didn't want to take anything away from that thread so I started a new one. A National Guard soldier who was killed after throwing himself on top of a grenade was NOT awarded the MOH a few months ago. In fact his chain of command didn't even put him in for it. Instead they opted to put him in for a silver star with "V" device, which is the third highest medal awarded in the Army. The soldier was on the turret of a humvee when a grenade was thrown in the vehicle. Everyone else jumped out of the vehicle while this soldier dropped down and pulled the grenade into his stomach to absord the blast and protect his team mates. The reason for not being put in for a MOH, according to his company commander was that he didn't feel that such a small unit(it was a deployed company sized element) wasn't big enough to put someone in for such a medal. Looking back at the day my team read this article all my co-workers were furious about this incident. That soldier is deserving of nothing less than the MOH, and his company commander is a POS for not putting him in for one. There are no guidelines as to the size of unit that can put someone in for this medal, it is for heroism, not heroism from someone in a division sized element. This pisses me off. Quote Also, from what I hear rapists and child molesters are the bottom of the food chain in prison, so who knows what unspeakable things happened to him while he was in there. And even though his brother was cleard of criminal charges I have a feeling that the civil suit that is preparing to ensue will be brutal. The undeniably huge difference in Pat's death and the death of someone of a lesser social standing is that the Army knew the truth immediately, covered it up, and lied about it. They stood there at his memorial service, which was broadcast on live national television, looked his mother, father, and widow square in the face and lied to them and the entire country. People that have given their sons and husbands lives to fight wars waged by people that will get no closer to violence than the evening news deserve - no - REQUIRE a great deal more respect than the Tillmans have been given. The absolute least the Army could have been was honest with the family and they failed even at that. Quote I'm with you guys 100 percent in thinking that the family should know the truth, my big issue was with the amount of media coverage this incident has gotten while countless others never even warranted so much as a blurb on the news ticker at the bottom of the screen on CNN or Fox News History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. I don't have a right to make a 'statement' about my opinion on matters such as this, but I am wholeheartedly in agreement with the things YOU'VE said. Quote You should have every right to make a statement about it, not serving doesn't lessen the value of your opinion in any way. I agree with it all, except that I think we should investigate all of these if for nothing more than to stop them from happening. I realize the negative spin it throws on war oprations, but better that than troops dying by our own. Quote i agree with you completely, all incidents like this should be loked into carefully, what is getting on my nerves is that people are making more of an issue of this one incident than all the other soldiers killed under unfortunate circumstances. Inicidents like this WILL happen in combat regardless of how many steps you implement to prevent, the best we can do is look to see if there was any gross negligence and what lessons we can learn from it. My hat goes of to Pat for serving it was a great sacrifice to leave the NFL and he is a great American for doing what he did. But drawing out this investigation on and on, I'm sorry but I personally find it BS, there's a former platoon mate of mine who no longer has a leg because he stepped on a US land mine, there was no major investigation as to why there was a US mine in the middle of a patrol base. There have been countless other Americans killed by friendly fire, yet the public brushes them off when the command releases the immedeate investigation showing the unfortunate circumstances that caused a fratricide incident in the heat of battle. But god forbid we don't publicly hang someone if the same set of circumstances happens upon a celebrity. I am in no way trying to take anything away from the sacrifices and heroism of Pat, I am a soldier myself he was a brother in arms, I am trying to add significance to those who have been overlooked by the public. And if you aren't going to give them the same amount of attention than just accept that a series of events led to the unfortunate circumstances which ended his life. It's combat, no matter how much you try and plan to avoid it accidents will happen, and even thoguh they can't be just written off we can't name someones death more important than anyone elses. note: I wasn't attacking the original poster, nor gearing this towards anyone in SC, I'm just frustrated at the way the public doesn't seem to give a crap abotu anyone but a celebrity. Jesus fucking christ, lighten the fuck up people. I was trying to have some drinks with my buddies and people had to make an issue and ruin it. to everyone who just joined in the friendly banter, thank ya to everybody else, if you don't like the name of a drink, don't drink it, if you don't like the thread, don't read it, but getting my thread moved to speakers corner cause people are too righteous, or maybe just need to have some thicker skin, that's fucked up, get off you damn high horse, or if you really want to make an issue go start your own thread in SC, but don't ruin someone elses who's just having a good time.
