  1. Does this help anyone? Dave
  2. Got my first ticket last week... not going to the DZ though. Illegal left turn. So annoying... 2 other people made the same turn I did while the cop was writing my ticket. After he told me it was a $70 ticket, I mentioned that fact to him. He said "have you ever gone fishing?... you can't catch them all." That just pissed me off. I'm taking a transportation engineering class now. The professor mentioned he has a friend in transportation that was pulled over for some kind of illegal turn or something. He went to court with a book of standards for intersection markings, and said that the sign he didn't follow wasn't placed at the standard location, yada yada, and got off. I'd love to try something like that but I don't wanna have to borrow a tie for court.
  3. AS8015B has magically appeared in the /uploads/ folder of skydivingmovies.com. It is NOT a free document so therefore will have to be removed. But I'm currently on a break. If anyone should happen to download it, there's nothing I can do. Gee I wonder what rebel uploaded it.
  4. I don't really think night jumps should necessarily be required for the D license, but night jump training should. That'll prepare jumpers to make a night jump if they have to for some reason (like if the sun sets suddenly while they are in freefall
  5. hehe I just posted about it. Is kate2.wmv incomplete? Dave
  6. Someone uploaded a video taken from TV of the Jump for the Cause womens world record. It's Kate2.wmv in the /from tv/ folder at skydivingmovies.com. Very good video. Awesome breakoff shots. I love the shots from below during breakoff... the camera flyer shoots straight up through the center of the formation just as it breaks apart. REALLY COOL. video is about 12 megs. Who uploaded it? Dave
  7. Don't worry too much about little details like that. Have fun, finish AFF, and in a few more jumps you're not gonna care what the instructors thought you were doing wrong. All those hand signals and everything are gonna seem real trivial real soon. Same with that altitude awareness thing... thats just for students. J/K Dave
  8. I played that a lot last summer at work. Problem was single player gets boring after a while, so I actually programmed a 2 player battleship game in Excel. Wasn't truly 2 player... you had to talk to the other person (over IM) to say where you were aiming, etc, but it had 2 battleship boards drawn in excel, and you could click on a square once and it would turn white, twice and it would turn red. I had each ship drawn so you could place them with the mouse. It was crude, but it worked! Programming it kept me busy for a whole day.
  9. The Dead Sea is over 1300 feet below sea level. That's as close as you're gonna come.
  10. on history channel now (7:00 eastern). Dave

    ooops

Posted a different pic of this in another thread, but THIS is what happens when you land next to powerlines and let your canopy fall on them. That pink ball of shit used to be a 340 main. This also started a brush fire and took the dropzone's power out. On the right is Chrissy, the coolest DZO ever, who even let him keep the remains of the canopy. Closeup HERE. HERE's another guy that used to be in my club landing on the roof of the hanger at cross keys.

  13. Ahhhh my old IP address. Those were the good old days. Thats now http://www.skydivingmovies.com, open all year round, and possibly soon to be running on 2 different servers for better speed. Dave
  14. I thought his comment was funny. I don't think there's anything funny about a plane crash killing people, but it was still funny. I think most of the online assholes are probably nice people in real life. Comparing someone's online personality with their real personality can be comparing apples and oranges (apples are better, by the way). I'd like to see some of the online personalities burn up in a fiery internet plane crash, but I'd never like to see the real people get hurt. In other words, some people need to get offline. Dave
  15. I dunno what it means to the rest of the country, but it PISSES ME OFF. I'm now inside the Washington Air Defense Identification Zone. I can't fly without filing a flight plan and receiving a transponder code. I fly out of an uncontrolled airport, but now I need to be under air traffic control supervision as soon as I leave the ground. Pain in the ass. I've been getting really good at flying under the Baltimore class B airspace to avoid talking to controllers. At 3 local airports, including the one i flew out of until 9/11, you can't fly in without making a stop at another airport for a security screening. It's ridiculous. They're actually "wanding" passengers at those airports. I know my passengers. They can carry knives in my plane if they want. Who's the TSA to tell me they cant? My favorite quote from all of this is "What Bin Laden started, the TSA seems intent on completing." I totally agree with that. The terrorists won because of how we're reacting. Dave

  17. One thing to add. Their indicated airspeed wouldn't really be what I solved for. Assuming they use a pitot tube (which i doubt to be true but i have no idea), the shockwave changes the airspeed reading. To solve for that we need to use shock tables (or REALLY ugly equations). At Mach 16, the mach number of the air on the back side of a normal (perpendicular) shockwave is only 0.382. At 200,000 feet, thats equialent to 400 ft/s or 273 mph. But that calculation really doesnt say much. That's just the speed a pitot tube with a shockwave in front of it would see. It really has little to do with actual aerodynamic forces and all that. Dave
  18. Ok, I just did a calculation. I might have messed up somewhere because my answer came out to about half of what I expected, but here's my work: First you need to look up the density of the atmosphere at 200,000 feet (found in a standard atmosphere table). density = .6061e-6 slugs/ft^3. Then we need to figure out how fast they were going. The speed of sound at that altitude is 1047.9 ft/s, so at mach 16 they were doing 16,766 ft/s. dynamic pressure is (1/2)(density)(velocity^2) which comes out to 85.2 lb/ft^2. Now we look at the sea level equivalent speed. Put in the sea level density (.23769e-2 slugs/ft^3) into the dynamic pressure equation, and we solve back for a velocity of 267.73 ft/s, or 182.55 miles per hour. Ok, someone smart find my mistake if I have one.
  19. I havent done the calculation but the day of the disaster my aircraft design prof mentioned he calculated it around 300 knots. Dave
  20. Whoop, guess it has been built. Isn't that the program that was cancelled or am I thinking of something else? Time for my 8am class..... UGH! Dave
  21. Both of my brothers live in Manhattan. One has a 1 bedroom apartment which costs $2500 a month. The other has a studio on the edge of harlem and pays a tad less, but still wayyyyy too much. A roommate would help, but where'd ya put em? Those places are tiny. The one near harlem lives over a bar. He tried to become a bouncer but apparently he "applied" too late in the year and all those positions were filled. I'd imagine bartenders would have the same issues. Dave
  22. Looks like a C160 to me. I dont think any G222s have been built, have they? And its not a C-130 with only 2 engines. C-160 Dave
  23. The position of the dial has no affect on the internal workings of the altimeter. You don't need to "unwind" it. Just spin it whichever way is more convenient. Dave
