I'd say slope it. Land uphill, takeoff downhill. Your severely underpowered otter won't require a mile to land anymore.

video from german TV: ftp://24.45.154.64/from tv/german_tv/n-tv_takeoff_felix_baumgartner_p3.avi (24 megs) and ftp://24.45.154.64/from tv/german_tv/n-tv_takeoff_felix_baumgartner_p1.avi (41 megs, it's in the beginning). Or a short clip of it moving FAST at ftp://24.45.154.64/wingsuit/skyray.mov (6 megs). Dave

Connections to the temp server have dropped off so here's another link: ftp://24.45.154.64. Dave

I get a little over 500 kbs upload on my cable connection. The server was using up to about 135 when I checked yesterday. Course the server software lets me set a maximum if I want to. I started the server almost right away after getting the cable up and running. That way I wouldn't notice any speed reduction.

In case anyone missed it, a temporary server is up and running. In only the last 8 hours, 2 gigs have been downloaded in 236 files. 169 different files were downloaded. I'm trying to limit bandwidth usage a little since it's running on my own PC, so I'm not gonna repost the IP address until the usage dies down a little. Craig Poxon actually owns the skydivingmovies.com domain name. He once mentioned that the domain can be set up for load sharing, so www.skydivingmovies.com would forward you to one of the mirrors that can handle the load. That would work really well if a few others wanted to run servers. The only issue is we'd need to come up with some scheme to deal with uploads, so they end up on all the servers easily. Craig, ya here? Am I correct? Dave

Yep, this is just a short term solution. A real dedicated server was being set up for me but I'm not sure what the current status is. Hopefully this wont be needed for long. I wanna enjoy my fast connection! Dave

Psst, here's an update on skydivingmovies.com. I have a temporary server set up. I have no idea how it's gonna work so I'm not gonna connect it to the skydivingmovies.com url until I've had a chance to test it for a while. I want to limit bandwidth usage a little so this is the only place I'm gonna announce it until I see how it runs. The IP address of the new ftp server is 24.45.154.64 (No clicky! This is for those willing to put in some effort only! ) (i THINK it's a static IP but I don't really know yet, so the address might change next time I restart). Lemme know how it works for you. Happy downloading! Dave

I gots no news. But, I'm getting my cable internet installed on Sunday. Perhaps I'll run the server TEMPORARILY from home. Can't make any promises about speed (ok, yes I can, it'll be slow), but I'll see what I can do until a real server is set up. Dave

I'm finally back. Been offline for the last week. Moved to CT and joined the real world. I actually moved into my real apartment last night. Cable and internet will be installed on sunday. Got my computer at work yesterday but was busy all day (and my "superior" sits right next to me so I can't exactly goof off). Anyway, I haven't heard back from the guy that is (was?) supposed to take over the hosting. A month ago I thought I was a couple days away from being up and running but now I have no clue. I'll try to find out what's going on. Thanks for all the support! (and by the way, this Comanche stuff is pretty cool!

Do you have any data to back this up? Your coach jumps, including gear rental and packing, are $90. Gear is $23, packing is $6, and jump tickets are $20 (or less, I know). That means the coaching costs $21, right? Do you pay the coach more than $21? What do coach jumps at most operations cost? I guess I got lucky. I got my A just before coaching was required. I did a few coached jumps anyway. Price varied from a jump ticket to a jump ticket plus $10. Did another at a different dropzone and just had to pay for the second jump ticket. So what do the rest of you pay for coach jumps? Has it gone up since they became a requirement? Dave

I'd go. I've been there 5 times myself and I'd love to go back. It's a surprisingly safe feeling place. I remember on one trip I was leaving a mall bathroom behind a soldier. He had his machine gun strapped across his butt and got stuck in the doorway. You just don't see that in America. You'll see so many guns there you won't think twice about them after a little while. On my first trip, around 1987, we were trying to get to a certain area (cant remember where anymore), but it was considered dangerous at the time (stonings, not bombings). No cab drivers would take us there. Finally we asked one cab driver and he said sure. We asked why he would and nobody else would. He reached into his glove compartment and pulled out his gun... "This is why." Ya don't see that in new york! It's a cool place. Just like skydiving, if you can deal with the risk, go for it. Dave

Whenever skydivingmovies.com is back up, I'd be happy to host it... maybe multiple resolutions if you want. Dave

What happend to ftp.skydivingmovies.com???

Still waiting to hear from the new host. I thought it'd be up and running a week ago. Dunno what the holdup is, but I'm definitely not complaining... it's free! I don't want to make any guarantees yet, but I'll just say I expect it to be better than before when it's back. Worth the wait! Anyway, I'm in the process of moving and won't have high speed internet for at least a week, so even if the server gets online I still can't upload any files yet. Dave -
Wow, thanks for all the congrats! I've been waiting a long freakin time to be able to call myself a rocket scientist so i just had to do it. No more of that. I hope I never do anything with rockets! I'll try to never call myself that again.
-
...but I am a rocket scientist. got my degree in aerospace engineering last night! Only took me 5 years too!

whoopsie... here's the pic... and another... Dave

Apparently all of them.

Think its bad out there? Come see idiotic security measures in the DC area. We have a small airport here (2600 foot runway) that has TSA officials inspecting passengers of departing aircraft. Talk about a waste of money. The airport probably gets about 4 flights a day nowadays. Maybe a little more on a nice weekend. But then it gets even better. To return to that airport, all planes need to stop at a "gateway" airport to be inspected by another TSA official. On top of all that, the only people even allowed to fly into this airport are people that have planes based at the airport. No transient traffic allowed at all. Those that have planes there have been fingerprinted by the FBI and had background checks done by the secret service. I flew out of that airport until 9/11, then my flying club moved their plane somewhere else to avoid all the BS. Used to be nice. Dave

having landed on a sloping runway going downhill, all I can say is LAND UPHILL! I attached another pic of that runway. Couldnt imagine landing on that. That's the stuff Twin Otters were designed for. Dave

It's sort of funny... as a pilot, I consider 182s to be NICE planes. They're high performance, complex aircraft. They're just one or two steps above anything I normally get to fly. I'll be starting to fly Grumman Tigers next month and they're described as almost being in the same league as a 182, but not quite (similar cruise speed but much less payload). But when I'm jumping, I think of 182s as dinky little pieces of crap. It's all about perspective. Dave
-
I made my first jump from a 182 then did the rest of AFF out of a king air. I found the 182 a LOT trickier. Course it was my first jump and all... But you've got a lot less room to move around, and just getting in position to exit can be pretty stressful. It's sort of a dance to get out there. Lot more to remember than the kingair exit: "step left." I don't see a benefit to switching to a 182 for one jump. Once you're off student status and jumping solo, there's nothing all that complicated about exiting a 182 anyway. And hanging from the strut is great. But thank goodness I've been able to make most of my jumps from a twin otter. Dave

Pictures don't seem to work properly. Dave

I have a black 28" kill line... but considering it's not on my rig because it gave me a pilot chute in tow, ya might wanna go with the pink one.
-
I am not exactly an appraiser or anything, but from my experience I'll tell you that's an excellent price. Mines a '96 and i payed... more. Too embarrased to even say how much more. Make sure to have it sent to your own rigger for an inspection before you buy. Dave

Your brain'll catch up in a few more jumps.
