I KNEW I shouldn't have been PMing my credit card numbers, ATM pin number, social security number, and my secrets about skydivers and dropzones. Everyone else can stick with flirting, but I have serious business and general rumor spreading that I need to take care of. I wonder what that person would think of using dropzone.com email, which of course is more secure because it's email, right? Anyway, I'm going secure. No more PMs, no more "who's online", no more email, no more logging in, no more loading web pages, no more internet... i'm unplugging! Then my secrets will be safe from evil skydiving webmasters! Eh, maybe not. I'll risk it. Sangiro, remember us little people when you use our PMs to take over the world. Dave

You positive they'll grow? A couple friends of mine had one of those in their college dorm room a few years ago. It didn't live too too long... just a few months, but I don't think it grew significantly in that time. Mighta been a different type... I dunno. Dave

I still play Half Life team fortress on occasion. It's getting old but it's still a great game. Dave

Ok, I'm not accusing anybody of anything... but someone else is. I have to say this is the most ridiculous reason I've ever seen to use rec.skydiving instead of dropzone.com (or any other forums, as if there are so many alternatives): From a post on rec.skydiving, Frequently Asked Question #4: Ok, there's no direct mention of sangiro or dropzone.com at all. Perhaps this person is referring to other skydiving message boards. But I think we're all thinking the same thing... Sangiro, WHO ARE YOU SELLING OUR SECRETS TO? It's skydive las vegas, isn't it?? I KNEW IT! I've heard the person that made the post is very nice and all that so I'll let you go find out for yourself if you'd like. Dave

In case you missed the other thread... You gave me an idea. I grabbed frames out of a bunch of malfunction videos and put them online. http://www.skydivingmovies.com/mals. Dave

I just did a bunch of frame grabs from malfunction videos on skydivingmovies.com and put them all up at http://www.skydivingmovies.com/mals/. Hope ya find them entertaining if not educational! Dave

I dunno about stills, but there are a bunch of videos of mals/cutaways on skydivingmovies.com. I'd assume most stills that exist would be frame grabs from videos anyway. Dave

I have a similar problem, but at the other end of the spectum. Most people buying containers small enough to fit me want canopies half the size that I want, so the harnesses that fit usually have containers that are way too small. When I'm ready for a wingloading of 1.5, I'll be jumping an 80 square foot canopy. That's not happening for a loooong time. I'm perfectly happy with my 150 loaded at .8. And I definitely haven't noticed a lot of short skydivers. I'm usually the shortest/lightest guy at any DZ I go to. I don't think my attraction to skydiving has anything to do with being short... I just like being up in the sky.... where I can look down on all you tall people! BWAHAHA! Oh, wait... maybe it is cause i'm short. Dave

7500 square feet... http://spaceflightnow.com/news/0002/06x38parafoil/ Geez.... that thing uses an 80 foot diameter drogue. Just a tad bigger than a tandem drogue huh? Dave

Mine is the Comanche helicopter. It will be my life starting June 2 when I start work at Sikorsky Aircraft. June 2: orientation, paperwork, get settled. June 3: find the CEO and see about getting a Blackhawk at the local DZ.

Anyone have the ability to convert realplayer (.rm) files to anything else? Realplayer just won't work for me. uninstalled and reinstalled over and over... it just closes when i try to play a file. I have a (non-skydiving) video i'd like to be able to watch and can't figure out a way to do it on my computer. Dave

Working for me. I dunno whats wrong...maybe it was full for a min. And I'll try to get you a username soon. Dave

I dunno how different the flight characteristics would be for me, but I have a microraven 120 loaded at a little under 1.1. Got any other tips now that you've seen how it flies? Dave

I think you have an unlimited bandwidth account. AndyMan emailed the username and pword a long time ago if you still have it. I dunno what they were. Dave

Eh, no need for anything so complicated... just bring 6500 floppies. The server itself is in the Chicago area. The mayor shut down Meigs field in order to protect the server from possible terrorist attacks. AndyMan runs it, but i have a feeling connecting anything directly to it wouldn't be possible. We'll figure something out... Dave

3/4ths of all hard drive space on earth. at least it seems that way. I'd prefer to have all the hard drive space, but the hosting is free so i cant complain. I still wonder what the hosting (provided by AndyMan) would cost if I (or some rich dude) actually had to pay for it. The server seems to contain well over 9 gigs now... over 1200 videos. Dave

Most of those illusions are inner ear type things that affect pilots flying by instruments. When you have no view, or even worse an obscured view, you can't trust your senses and need to go by what the instruments are telling you. I'm sure there are plenty of visual illusions, similar to the landing illusions, that affect skydivers, but I have no idea how much the instrument flying type illusions would affect a skydiver. The landing illusions for pilots can be tough to get over. Wide runways tend to look short, especially if you're coming in too high. A short, wide runway makes it look like you're too high, so you might come in too low to compensate. Sloping runways can really look weird from final. Can anyone think of visual illusions that affect skydivers landing? Dave

skydiving videos that focus on form (free?)
pilotdave replied to andy2's topic in Safety and Training
Not really, but you can see some stuff that might help (or at least be interesting) in the /RW/ folder of skydivingmovies.com. herc-o2_edit.wmv in particular has some excellent clips of nice stable exits (from a C-130) and closeups of body movements. It's not an instructional video or anything but it might help. Dave -
Awesome video (other than the shaking)! Dave

Can't get that article to load for some reason. But I've been lucky at my school. Our paper has printed a bunch of positive articles about my skydiving club ( http://www.inform.umd.edu/studentorg/cpsc/Articles1.html). They threw one little blurb in a couple months ago that just made me laugh though. It was just a little sidebar in the diversions section listing some upcoming campus events, and they included my club's upcoming information session that we run before each skydiving trip. I attached a scan of it. The date and time were both wrong, and the blurred out phone number is my home phone number! At the very least they could have printed my email address or something. I share that phone number with my 4 roommates. It's a damn good thing not a single person actually called.
