  1. Had guy a work a few years ago that wanted to start skydiving. I took him through tandem progression. It took him awhile to get through the program but finally finished. He did one solo jump and later that week told me he was giving up the sport. When I asked him why, he said he thought it was really going to help him pick up chicks! He said they didn't care when they told them he was a skydiver. I then told him if he would have told me that was the reason he wanted to skydive that I could have saved him alot of money. Even if skydiving does help you pick up women, you will lose the ones that stick around for awhile when they figure out skydiving is more important to you than they are.
  2. I had an older J2 with a raven 181 in it. I put a 170 in it a few times. Tight, but no problem. Give it a try before you buy.
  3. It is on Joe Jenning's Good Stuff DVD.
  4. One of the reasons for that trend is that a lot experienced jumpers fly small hp mains. The 7 cell f111 reserves do not land as well as the mains at high wingloadings, so they jump bigger reserves. On the other side it is normally the lower experience jumper that jumps mains that are 170 and up. At a low experience level you should have a reserve a close to your main or a bit bigger. Most low time jumpers have never jumped a 7 cell f111 canopy. If your reserve was smaller than what you are used to jumping, it could turn out to be more than you bargained for.
  5. If there was something trailing behind him he probably would have wrapped himself in it and made the problem worse.
  6. Even your 8% rate is terrible. I bought a truck 2 months ago and got 4.5%. My wife also bought a car last tuesday and we got 4.9% on that. How long is the loan for? The longer the loan the higher the rate, but even at 72 months we could have got 5.5%. I would look around some more. If your credit is really bad that could be a problem though.
  7. Icarus eXtreme FX 93(70 jumps), set of risers, d-dag,pilot chute, free bag and reserve PC. Well over $2000. It wasn't one of my favorite skydives.
  8. This is some thing you will have to ask at your DZ. Deployment method varies from DZ to DZ. I think that most are using a throw out pilot chute these days. When we used ripcords, we did a transition jump with the student a couple of jumps after they graduated. But, like I said, you'll have to ask your instuctor how they do things.
  9. Why would you even think front riser if you knew you were low? Why wasn't a break turn one of your options?
  10. There are several jumps between official training (ie AFF) and the A lisence, that a student has to complete with someone. This is really where the coach comes in. Yes you can charge a fee, but it won't be much.
  11. Yea Shrek, but for some reason I had a lapse in judgement and let you shoot video on some of my tandems.
  12. Don't listen to the people saying you might be able to find someone who will do it. If you look, none of them will have a tandem rating. If you try to go with your friend, you are doing him a disservice. If you do find someone who will do it, they have bad jugdement, and I wouldn't let a friend of mine jump with them. Read the incident report from one of the tandem fatalities this year.
  13. Sorry, but keeping your head on a swivel will not help someone coming through your canopy in freefall. I had it happen to me. By the time I heard her coming and started to look up she had already clipped the nose of my canopy and then hit my foot on her way past. Another 6 inches and it would have been a doulbe fatality. In this case the We had a 3way freefly with a solo sit out behind us. We knew she was just learning sit so we asked her to give us good seperation before she exited. I broke at 4500 and dumped at 3K then turned my canopy perpendicular to the line of flight. As I started to stow my slider is when she hit me. She said she rolled over from her sit a 5K and was in the middle of our opening 3 way. She decided to try to track past us and the open. Turned out to be a bad idea, but we got lucky. Just her constant backslinding in sit brought her right over top of our group. Suggetions to aviod this: Get out last or trust the group behind you. If you don't know the person behind you, ask them what they are doing on the jump, if thay are are practicing things such as tracking sit or headdown, make sure they know to do it perpindicular to the line of flight. Make sure they give you proper seperation at exit and you do the same for others. Once you open make sure you are not flying your canopy down the line of flight and under the groups that exited after you. On the other hand if you open at 1K on every jump you wouldn't have to worry about it too much.
  14. I would say your size has something to do with it. Had a friend about your size that would blow up canopies a good bit. PD made him a Sabre that was super reinforced. He eventually quit jumping cause he was afraid he might blow up his reserve.
  15. [5. Make sure rubber bands are in good condition and stows (especially the one or two closing stows) are a good size (approx 2" To add to this make sure that the rubber bands are the right size.
  16. Bill is right, you can learn to slow your body down. I jumped with a guy many times that was 6'0" 350. He had no problem staying with us in RW. Don't know what the speeds were as there were no pro tracks back then, but I was about 6'0" 165 at the time. He had a baggy suit and just learned to slow himself down. He did blow up several canopies though and finally quit jumping, due to fear of blowing up his reserve or harness failure.
  17. If I understand what you are asking then, the answer is no. The pilot chute can not pull the risers off. The canopy is what pulls the risers off the container. Since the canopy is still in the container, even if the 3 rings come lose, the rises and canopy will stay with the container unless the main comes out of the container. It is very common for the main to come out when the reserve is deployed. Everyone will have a different opinion on whether to cutaway or not. Do a search in the forums to find some of the pros and cons. But stick with what your instuctors taught you for now.
  18. No big deal to land without the flare toggles. I land about 25% of my tandems without them. Can stand up in no wind without them, although I am not recommending that you don't use them in no wind, It can be done. On windy days there is no need them IMO. I jump EZ 384's and A2's.
  19. I like toogles too. Almost named my dog that, but went with "Swoop" instead.
  20. I have also been inquiring about this lately. I am going to visit in-laws in Michigan infew few weeks and several of them want to jump with me. Of the 3 DZ's that I called 2 said no, one messege not returned from DZO(I have to call him back I guess) One DZO said they couldn't do it because they were trying to run a buisiness. I didn't go to buisness school but seems like if I help you get 5 tandems that wouldn't have jumped there otherwise, midweek, at cessna DZ, I am probably helping your buisness not hurting it.
  21. as a sidenote: i think that wide angle lenses make a novice vidiot fly much closer to a tandem than comfort-level.*** This is problem. If you are not comfortable flying very tight with a tandem then you should not be videoing it. That is why there is the 500 jump rule. Hell 500 isn't enough for alot people around here. I always get flamed when I say this, so light the fire!
  22. I like the idea of trying to sell to the tandems with no video at all. We have to many of these for some reason. How much would a glove for my TRV 19 cost? I don't want to push any video guys out, just make some extra cash when they don't wan't video and maybe an extra $10 to add that view to their outside video.
