Tandem Malfunction - Video all Tandem masters needs to see!
FlyinseivLP2 replied to flyer299's topic in Instructors
Even If you are not using it you don't want to create a hard pull. If packed incorectly you may have to pull both drouge releases to deploy the main. -
Tandem Malfunction - Video all Tandem masters needs to see!
FlyinseivLP2 replied to flyer299's topic in Instructors
Scary video. I hate those aux housing. If possible I always take our Sigma or a Vector II with only one drouge realease.I would think wrapping the housing around the MLW would create a hard pull or at least potential for one.I would think that the housing could be tacked in place so this won't happen, we never move the handle placement anyways. As for deploying a reserve into an inflated drouge, I would much rather do that then what happened in the video(I do understand that he didn't know what he was dealing with though) -
I know it is tough but make yourself jump just one more time. If it has been awhile since you jump you need to get the feel of it again. Then that jump will probably make the decision, to continue on or not, for you. Usually when I see this happen, once they get past that one jump things get alot easier. I remember going through AFF. I was on the way to altitiude for my level 5. I was so scared I was thinking this is the dumbest thing you have done. I said to myself that one I got on the ground I would not come back. I made that jump only because I did not want to be the chicken. I went on to make 412 jumps that year. Good luck.

After landing off in the middle of a small town "Hows you gonna gets back up der"

Are you going to collect on the insurance? Fed Ex does not provide insurace. What you are paying for is to declare a value onthe goods you shipped. If somthing happens and Fed Ex decides that they are at fault they will pay for the good whether you declared a value or not. If you don't declare the value though the the max they will pay is $100.

8 reserve rides in about 2700 jumps

I would say it is a bit excessive. It's great to be safe but iyou are holding yourself back from progressing. Also if spend that much time on your altimeter you are spending less time building a visual reference which can be more important than you altimeter. What if your altimeter malfuctions? Will you have enough cofidence in your visual refrence to realize this? Also if you can get enogh seperation from the group in 5 sec then there is no reason to break so high. Why not set your break off for 1500 above break off track for 5 sec and deploy. No reason to even look at the alti before deployment if you are only tracking for 5 sec anyways, you already know it's time to dump.

Stall Surge on Tandems (or sport rigs)
FlyinseivLP2 replied to crazydiver's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Hmmm...I know the canopies I've jumped (over 2.1:1) could be landed just fine with a straight in approach. I know folks who jump sub-100 canopies that say the same thing. The coaches I've talked to have stated that if they can't land right without a high performance landing, then they're doing something wrong. *shrug* Folks will believe what they want to believe, though. Yea I can land a velocity loaded at 2.5 straight in no problem too. But I want to see you land a Raven Reserve or something like that at the same wingloading. Canopy choice/design has something to do with it. -
call your sister 3 way have some 3 some me so horny

Performance Designs website has some good stuff.

Lee I had a game at the house last night. If I knew you were around I would have givin you a call, but I thought you went up to Atlanta pretty much every weekend. McNeeney made it over. I just built a new table so I will probably have a game at least once a month. If you are interested give me a call. You still having your game? Maybe I'll get back over there sometime. Jeff

Do you tell your employer that you do skydiving?
FlyinseivLP2 replied to bastichu's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No need to to tell them in an application. But once you have the job they cannot do anything about it if they don't like it. That said I have taken acouple of my bosses on tandems -
We went to Saffire when we were there in Nov. Everyone we talked to said it was by far the best club. It was so packed we couldn't get a table. The club is huge and there was about 150 of the best looking strippers I have seen. But you couldn't get any attention without a table. I think it would be very good if you went during the week when it wasn't so packed, but we didn't have a great time. A friend just got back and went to Speramint Rhino. He and his wife said the girls were pretty horrid. Remember you can get a free cab or limo to any of the clubs in vegas.

You said you used the green foam from Joanns and then you said use closed cell foam. I just used the same stuff and is not a closed cell foam, it is a high density open cell foam. Closed cell foam will not absorb liquid. I used the extra green foam as a brush to poly my racetrack and it definately absorbs liquid. BTW I have played on one of your tables (I assume) at Skinnyshreks and it is a nice table. Maybe if he didn't go up to the Farm every weekend I could get him to play in my game sometime.

I would use the MDF for the rail if you haven't cut it yet. Get a piece of 3/4 ply for the base. The sandply at home depot was about the same price as MDF will make for a lighter table. For the rail leave just enough foam to wrap around the sides. YOu don't want it on the bottom side though. Use the search on that scott keene forum and you will find detailed intructions for wraping the rail w/pictures. Like i said I am just finishing my first table but did a lot of reasearch there before I started. My table has turned out great for some who hasn't picked up a power tool since shop class 15 years ago.

I am just finishing my first table. It is 96"x48" oval racetrack w/ 10 cupholders. Used moleskin for the playing surface. Check out the links that Thontas posted, the scott keene forum has tons of info and pictures to help with building a table. pimpmypoker.com has some very nicelooking cupholders if you decide not make them yourself. Also you could use folding legs instead of it being a table topper, to save you the trouble with the cupholders. ($16 at home Depot) Will post pics of my table as soon as I finish, just have to put 2 more coats of poly on the racetrack. Good luck

I work for them and ship gear all the time. Pack it well, in a box. Use filler in the box to make it sturdy. Also put it in a garbage bag before you box it and put your address and phone number on the bag or attached to the rig. This way if the airbill was lost, they would still have your address to ship it to.

Have you ever had to use your reserve?
FlyinseivLP2 replied to shortyj's topic in Safety and Training
I have 8 reserve rides in 2700+ jumps. Spinning line twists, tension knot and line overs. If you stay in the sport most likley have to use your reserve. Even with very careful packing malfunctions will happen. If you are not sure you are ready for it, then stop jumping till you are. It could happen on your next jump. -
SOS System, what to do with a collapse under a 1000ft.
FlyinseivLP2 replied to azureriders's topic in Safety and Training
If we are talking about a canopy collapse due to turbulence, I would not be thinking about a canopy transfer anyways. IF you are high enough to get your reserve out then 99.9% of the time your main will reinflate way before your reserve will. If you don't have the altitude for for main to reinflate, then your reserve would not do you any good either. Something like a canopy wrap would be a much more likley scenerio where the SOS would be an issue. I honestly don't know what to do if you wanted to do it(we have never used SOS). Just wanted to point out that turbulence would not normally warrant a canopy transfer or cutaway. Best suggestion is to not jump in high or gusty winds. -
highest number of jumps ...w/o malfunction???
FlyinseivLP2 replied to mattmais's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm the opposite of peckerhead. 1000 jumps no cutaways. I just made it as my first was at 1001. Then I have had 8 total in my last 1700+ jumps. Many of these I didn't pack myself, 3 were tandems.I did pack one for Skinnyshrek once though. -
Did Kittenger really go supersonic?
FlyinseivLP2 replied to SkydiveJack's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I got the chance to meet him about 10 years ago. He was flying some strange bird down to Sun n Fun and stoped at my DZ to fuel. I did not know who he was but someone else did and we talked a bit about his jump. I seem to remember that he got very close to supersonic, but not quite. The most interesting thing about the jump was that it was only his 13th skydive. He joked that if he had more experience that he wouldn't have done it. He is a very interesting person that has done some amazing things in aviation. -
Yea, If you used the two hands on each handle method and you RSL worked properly, your reserve would be deploying before you even got your hands on the reserve handle.
