I don't think they are expecting him to live long enough to take the church in any direction. He's the "transitional" pope. I just think its weird that they are so upfront about that.
  2. Well, that's me with Spanish. I studied French and Spanish in high school but that was a loooooong time ago, and I went a lot further with my French. (Quit them both when the verb teses got tough!) When I started vacationing in Mexico, I decided I needed to brush up on the basics, then decided I needed to learn even more. I tried a few different audio programs and but finally broke down and started taking classes. In class, I can practice speaking and get grammar basics. The thing is, the more I learn, the more I realize I still need to learn! Oh, and while some people can do it, mixing languages is tough. Reading something in French even now after all these years will literally force all the new Spanish I've learned out of my head! But I've got people in my class who are learning Spanish as a 3rd or even 4th language! Hats off to them!

He was also a member of Hitler's Youth Party. I find it amusing that they went out of their way to choose an old pope who wouldn't last too long. I guess that's whay they didn't need to think about it for too long. They were looking for the oldest and most frail!
  4. Do you want to LEARN a language and reach a level of fluency? Or do you just want some basics for travelling, etc? Audio tapes can help with the basics and some may even touch on the grammar but if you really want to learn a language, I think you need more formal instruction. Even the best audio learning package (or computer package) will only take you so far.

Yeah, there's a bunch of people in the lunchroom here glued to the TV.
  6. My rigger will do that also unless I specifically ask him to repack the main. If he repacks the main (and I usually ask him to) he charges an extra $5.00. Our gear store, on the other had will charge an extra $10.00 or $15.00 to inspect and repack your main if you bring your rig in with the main attached.
  7. No one has a right to rape and kill. But this most recent case doesn't really apply to the whole "registered sex offender in your neighborhood" scenario since the mother invited the creep into her home and effectively into her daughter's life.
  8. I couldn't possibly pick a favorite! But everytime I hear Brandy on the radio, I have to sing along!
  9. For the record, I never said I was comfortable with it. I don't think ANYONE did. Its a matter of recognizing a person's legal rights, and having some faith in the legal system this country was founded on. I also think that system has been letting us down. The authorities need to do their part by keeping tabs on these people and insuring that they aren't a danger to our children. We shouldn't have to become a society of vigilantes in order to protect our children. And I realize that perhaps its easier for me to say that since I'm not a parent. If my own child or niece or nephew were threatened or harmed, there is no telling what I would do. I'm not even sure the argument applies in this case, since this wasn't random. This was the mom's ex boyfriend, and the mother didn't even report her daughter missing for two days. Maybe all single moms should be required to thoroughly investigate a man before they agree to date him. I don't know the answer, that's for sure.
  10. Sometimes you just need a good cry!
  11. This one's really a no brainer! He did you a favor! What a loser he is- tells you he has feelings for you then hops in bed with someone else an hour later! Guess those feelings were DEEP, huh? Walk away and be glad you weren't more emotionally unvested.
  12. Wow- where can you do a tandem for $130.00??? I'm sure the tips are appreciated but not expected. When you pay close to $200.00 for the "joy ride" not including video, tipping seems inappropriate and its not something I would encourage. (I'd rather have them apply that $20.00 towards their next jump!
  13. Krispy Kremes = Crack He's not a friend, he's a pusher!
  14. Well OK then! Sounds like you made the right choice!
  15. Well, that sucks. Obviously its your decision and 7 day weeks aren't good for your family either. I'd probably pick the one that was best for my career in the long run, especially with all the time, money, blood sweat and tears you've already invested in it.
  16. Because he didn't realize you were a 50 jump wonder at the time. (If I read his post correctly, that is!)
  17. With so little time in the sport, maybe you haven't noticed this but OVERCONFIDENCE KILLS. And the thing is, sometimes it kills other people who are just minding their own business. Sadly, I've seen it more than once. Instead of shooting your mouth off and telling us all how skilled you are, maybe, just maybe you should listen!
  18. Well, considering the years of education required for your profession, I'd say YES that's pretty insane. I'd take the more reliable closer to home job as long as it fits well with your career path. Think of it and the hours you will be working as short term while you get better established. If you are working weekends, that means you'll get the ocassional weekDAY off. Jumping during the week is OK and chances are you'll find other people to play with. Of course, its entirely up to you.
  19. Yes, for the job I have now. 4 interviews over about 6 months before an offer was finally made. I'm in the middle of that process all over again, and so far its been really similar. Good luck!
  20. I've jumped with a couple of cameramen who will print up one or two shots and pass them around the video debrief, and let everyone know they're for sale. A few years ago, that wasn't really possible. I've bought a few pictures that way, in fact there's one on my wall right now. We pay more for convenience everywhere else, so I really don't see why it should be so different at the dz anyway.
  21. The way I'm reading this, there was no extra $10.00 charge. The price was always $30.00, which the guy happily agreed to pay for not one but TWO prints of a close up shot under canopy. (Too close apparently!) My guess is that while he was waiting for his print, he went to show off the 5X7 to his buddies and one of them told him he was paying too much! So he decided to complain about the price and try to get the cameraman to reduce it. So the cameraman got defensive and explained his pricing strategy. Now the cameraman has an extra close up shot of the newbie who tried to kill him, and the newbie has nothing.
  22. We often have a cameraman on RW loads, especially the larger ones. We typically "buck up" for the cameraman, and he'll sell dubs for a couple of bucks or prints. I think the going rate is $15.00 - $20.00 for an 8X10, but that's when either his slots been covered or everyone on the load paid a dollar already. DTPilot- I think you owe this guy an apology for misrepresenting the situation. He asked for $30.00, which you were willing to pay, for not one but 2 prints of you under canopy. Sounds pretty reasonable to me! You didn't get bent out of shape until he explained his pricing at your request. Those are once in a lifetime shots and unfortunately, he only got them because YOU got too close under canopy. You're very lucky he's an experienced canopy pilot and neither one of you was hurt! Me, personally, I have NO pictures under canopy or even any good landing shots.
