  1. OK, so altitude and Tempreture are not much of an issue. The step down from a 290 skymaster to a 210 is a big one. Our students start on 290 Skymasters, then to 230's then 200's, then 190, 170 and from there on down they make their own choices. I'm guessing 230 is the way to go. t It's the year of the Pig.
  2. I must agree with you here. I have 2500+ dives without a Cypres, and should mine not turn on tomorrow morning, I will tell another Instructor and go and skydive. It is not part of my gear, it is not part of my drills. It's there in case I have a brain fart or go to sleep. If Cypres went bancrupt tomorrow and all units were recalled - it would not change my view of skydiving at all. It's the year of the Pig.
  3. I've flown Air France with my rig as carry on, Cypress equipped. Was not asked a thing. Don't know about Russia. t It's the year of the Pig.

    digitude alt

I used a digimaster a long time back and thought it was FANTASTIC, particularly when debriefing AFF as you could tell them they pulled at 5.2 as opposed to "Between 55 and 5. As for the batteries story, and things going spectacularly wrong - I guess that means leaving the Pro Track at home and removing the Cypress from your rig, and getting a solar powered camera.... Alti's stop working. Eyes come first. t It's the year of the Pig.
  5. At our DZ - It's 100, and I think that if you're just wearing one, and skydiving (like freeflying with a friend) that may be OK. If you are "doing camerawork" more experience - 200 to 300 at least. t It's the year of the Pig.
  6. "such as a dangerous sport, dysfunctional spouse, or hazardous job." Man. 3 out of 3 ain't bad. Must have had 1 hell of a youth! I think the most likely heath hazard is hearing loss. I have high frequency hearing loss in my left ear. All I can think of is all those 30 min rides to altitude in the open door of a 182 - like over 1000 hours worth... t It's the year of the Pig.
  7. Wendy has given good advice. Some insructors will try and "accelerate" your progression because of your weight. Having started lower down the scale - this will mean you cover more distance on the scale in the same amount of time as other jumpers. Women are familiar with this as the big guys are always telling them to downsize because of what THEY would be jumping at that weight. Take your time. The only reason to want to go smaller is to want to go faster. t It's the year of the Pig.
  8. What is the surface elevation of your DZ and how hot does it get in the summertime? t It's the year of the Pig.
  9. Find a phonebook - get a quote on your cheapest funeral possible - compare to Cypres cost. A Cypres will not ensure your safety. I'm more likely to hook it in - and even if it works - it's more likely to happen when I'm out of awareness chasing some AFF student than in the "knocked unconsious" senario. Mine was a gift - but when it's done, I'll probably buy another one. I have 3800 dives. t It's the year of the Pig.
  10. I jump with one. It was a gift from a former skydiver. Most expensive gift I ever got, but I did 2500 dives without it. I think my AFF students feel they need one cos if I need one.... well, maybe they do too. t It's the year of the Pig.
  11. OK! Acronyms are great if everyone knows what they are... but what is an LO?
  12. I chew gum and the only problem I've had is people making fun of me when I'm doing Tandems. I don't allow my AFF students to chew gum as I need to "lip read" them in freefall. I would imagine it could cause me some difficulties if I hooked it in. Maybe I should spit on deployment - but I would go through a lot more gum in a day then... t It's the year of the Pig.
  13. Never - and if I suspected it - I would ground them. All I need is an opinion. t It's the year of the Pig.
  14. Hi There, I'm looking for contact details for Wayne. We met in 1986 and again in 1992. He was a survivor of the Twin Otter crash at Perris in April 1992 and was paralysed as a result. He was cameraman for Dan BC's team, "Perris Airmoves" on the dive as RW Stuart had gone into town to fix his camera. Years later I heard he was jumping at Elsinore - sitflying - and had remarried. I recall seeing a few pics in Skydiving Magazine, I think. I'm wanting to speak to him about the difficulties of and solutions to skydiving as a paraplegic - not just doing the once off tandem thing - but skydiving. I've done a search of DZ.com forums, but there's nothing out there on solo dives for paraplegics. If anyone has any advice on getting an experienced jumper back in the air, I'd like to hear it. If you know Wayne - ask him to PM me, OK? Thanks, t It's the year of the Pig.
  15. I have close to 50 now. They are a blast - but you need to plan them carefully. An illuminated alti is a must, Dytter, Pro Dytter, Time out etc a good idea, small torch to check for broken lines advisable. Recomend a solo to start, then FS or FF or CF with an experienced, current night exponent. BEWARE THE SHADOW! More people have hurt themselves hooking away from the "Dude below them on the black canopy" than all other injuries combined. Its your shadow. Say it! It's your shadow. Enjoy. t It's the year of the Pig.
  16. I heard the SA dive missed the eclipse by quite a few minuites last year. Was that the one organised by Graham? t It's the year of the Pig.
  17. Hi There, No-one seems to recognise anyone else's ratings. When I went to the US, they were not interested in my SA ratings, and when I returned, they were not interested in my USPA ratings. Tandem seems less affected, as you are rated by the manufacturer on their gear - but here you need 1000 dives before you can do Tandem or AFF so you may find even that is not accepted. I've found that licences (A, B, C and D) transfer without a problem. I know all AFF students I've trained in SA are accepted in the UK, some in Europe, non in Switzerland - even if they have their licences. I don't see a problem with riggers - although our governing body still expects them to transfer (Pay for) their ratings here. t It's the year of the Pig.
  18. Run, now. Fast. Go on, get out.... It's the year of the Pig.
  19. Way to go, Suz. One door shuts - another opens. Hope you get a new job soon! t It's the year of the Pig.
  20. Beretta than nothing... I have a Model 71 with 80 000 rounds through it - but then there's no energy going through a Model 71, and it worked great in my one and only gunfight. Your friend will understand. Better to break now than when you need it. As for all the negative stuff going down about Beretta - It must have been chosen to replace the 1911 for a reason. t It's the year of the Pig.
  21. This is such a major part of my life I cannot imagine not having my SO share it with me. t It's the year of the Pig.
  22. Bwahhh I guess it doesn't matter when you look at it that way... although I always liked Lenin's little cap. Russian caps went BIG after that.

    Zorb

Hi Lolie. So this...Zorb... You can't see further than your hand - you have no control - and you puke for 15 min when you stop? Sounds like my grandfather....
  24. And length of focus? Would it be like a HUD?
  25. And the samr could be said for the change if foreign policy between Clinton and Bush... It's the year of the Pig.
