  1. I am against abortion and I cannot tell you the last time I was in a church. I am against it but really dont give 2 shits either way. If some chik wants to go give a baby the Shop Vac treament. Go ahead. Take the easy way out. SO whats your solution? Ban all religion? That will show them. Man if the left could understand that I would be so much more happy. Should I make a list of shit the left wants to ban or restrict because they dont like it or think they have to tell us how to live? i'd like to see that list. i'm not even being facetious. i really would...i'm curious. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  2. So anybody who has some sort of faith is stupid? What church did you step into that discriminated against anyone? it not because of religious beliefs that proposition 8 was passed in CA? you don't think what happened to all of those people is discrimination? is not religion that that fuels the fight to take women's rights away re: abortion/roe v wade? religion has been the cause of massive human rights violations and even genocide, and decimation of entire societies since the beginning of time...hasn't history taught us anything? seriously? there's nothing wrong with faith. that's the beauty of freedom - you can believe in whatever you want, but you don't get to govern what anyone else believes. don't believe in homosexuality? don't sleep with same sex partners. against abortion? don't have one! that can apply to any activity deemed inappropriate or sinful. and POOF! problem solved. leave the rest of us alone. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  3. My aunt believes that WWF wrestling is real and the moon landing was faked. i have some friends and family who have pretty extreme ideas about "what goes on that we don't know about". some call ideas like these conspiracy theories. i could never say one way or the other how true they are, and its definitely not healthy to have that kind of paranoia and distrust. however, i think its equally unhealthy to have blind trust in a government/system/person charged with protecting you (us), especially one who has failed. and yes, i know he swore we'd never be attacked on our soil again - and we haven't. but at what cost? the arrogance with which we take lives, the double standard that exists to justify our actions abroad...ugh. (wow, i hijacked my own post) bush is walking out of the white house on a trail of unanswered questions, shady actions, and question marks. i think its a shame more people weren't questioning his motives sooner. of course, he had the big bad terrorism banner to hide behind. count me in as another one who finds it odd that OBL keeps slipping through our fingertips. i'm just not informed enough to allude to a reason why that is.... Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  4. hahahaha. don't worry....i'm pretty sure that most of us got it. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  5. ya know....i have to say, sarah palin has come across as more lucid, competent, and level headed TODAY while defending all of the claims against her than she has throughout the entire campaign. the bullshit "folksy" crap is gone, she looks like the "hockey mom" she's always claimed to be in the first place (less makeup, hair down, casual clothes), and she's blunt and straight forward...where was THAT woman for the last few months? not that i'd have voted differently. i'd just have disliked her on a persoal level a lot less. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  6. Quote (Tempted to suggest a publication requirement … but that’s most gratuitous … as I signed a contract for my first book today. [happy-nerdgirl-dance] Someone thinks there’s an audience beyond dz.com for my pontificating on science, technology, and security. ) Congratulations!!!!!!
  7. Could happen . . . ya never know until ya see it, but I wouldn't count that out. funny, they were just talking about this very thing on NPR. apparently there are petitions being signed all over the country, PETA has already contacted him insisting he adopt (they went further and said no pure breds), etc... anywho, he has already said on record that if and when they get a dog, they will be adopting from a shelter. yay! i highly doubt he'd go against his word there....especially after the pressure he's already getting. he did say that one of his daughter has allergies, so the dog has to be hypoallergenic (like a poodle) apparently the girls want a labradoodle. awwwww! Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  8. each person, obama, biden McCain, and palin all had areas of expertise in different subjects. we just didn't get to hear about the deficiencies on the dem side. i absolutely agree with that. although usually my opinions here are voiced in support of obama, i of course realize that flaws lie on both sides. i'm not even speaking about sarah palin specifically when i say how ridiculous i think o'reilly's comment was. she just happens to be the person he was talking about. the idea that a deficiency that BIG could be considered acceptable for someone in the VP position blows my mind. that he would suggest needing tutoring on such basic concepts is something to just wave a finger at...i don't get that logic. that's all. (i really do fundamentally dislike sarah palin...she represents everything i oppose. not the GOP, her. so of course i'm personally pleased that all the rumors are finally being *somewhat* substantiated) Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  9. ok - i have 2 questions, but instead of making new threads, yadda yadda, i think they fit just fine w/in this one. 1.) what exactly are the republican party's core principles and values? and i don't mean the convoluted minority's extreme views that get all the airplay. i know that's not a true representation of the party itself. and for that matter, how do moderate republicans feel about religion taking the reigns of their party? is it really still expected, given the diversity of the country's population, that we remain so true to Christian values? my biggest issue with American politics has always been, how do you get a country of various cultures, religions, ethnicities, etc to rally around a person who is so insistent that we uphold only one belief system? you can't deny the worth of such a vast number of peoples' values and expect them to support you...just my opinion though... 2.) is sarah palin really the person the majority of the party wants to groom for leadership in the coming years? why isn't ron paul a better choice? i, as liberal as i am (and many of my equally liberal friends), really like that guy. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  10. at least she knows how many states there are. there are 57 right? ok i kept hearing about this one but i never knew what was being referenced. i just found the clip on youtube, and it sounds to me like he was making a joke that the audience understood..but that's neither here nor there. i don't think obama's intelligence or education have ever been in question by either side, regardless of who you liked to win.... my post was about o'reilly suggesting that we should be okay with needing to tutor our VP on the basics of political structures, and on geography and history. stuff we learn in elementary school. that, to me, is absurd. as absurd as a party choosing a running mate without knowing how uninformed they truly are about world affairs. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  11. k i just watched the o'reilly version. i cannot believe that he suggested that its just her frame of reference in geography, history and political structure that are weak...but she can be tutored...?!!! are we really that bad off, that we'd stoop to selecting someone to be the vice president of this country, someone who could become the PRESIDENT, that needs to be freaking tutored on basic geography, history, and political structures? that makes me sick to my stomach...if they were elected, and then this kind of information came out...well, just thank goodness that didn't happen. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  12. i'll echo the anchor from the video: how in the world did someone like her get selected?! so many people have been asking this question since she was chosen. is there not some standard guideline for qualifications? how does one become a govt leader - state or otherwise - while not knowing which countries comprise NAFTA, or what our world's continents are? i learned a song in 3rd grade and have known them ever since. i'm just so glad that what everyone has known without knowing for the last few months is now going to be splattered across tv screens and monitors nationwide. what a fucking joke - and to say that the republican party is still looking to her for future leadership, as they get back to the basics of conservative principles? is she really their best representation? SERIOUSLY? i was considering McCain's platform until he chose her. it just reflects SUCH poor judgment. she disgraced them! what, are they going to put her through college real quick and see if it takes the 2nd time around? sheesh. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  13. Good luck to us all the anti Christ has arrived that's being a bit dramatic, don't you think? Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  14. gotcha. so it's not like they'll actually be casting a vote that day..just making the vote they've already cast "official". that's what threw me - how can one candidate concede and another accept if the EC hasn't even VOTED yet...now it's all becoming a bit more clear. ..."hooie" is a good word... Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  15. i voted based mostly on foreign policy, unlike a lot of people here. i have no mortgage, major debt, and i'm a full time student with a laughable income so i'm not being financially hit the way so many other are.. 1st and foremost - he promised immediate action and increased pressure regarding the Darfur genocide. i'm leaving for DC on friday morning to rally at his transition team's office, and to do a little lobbying for Genocide Intervention Network Int. so we shall see. i know that's not a hot button issue for most, but still.. i REALLY do hope that he meant what he said about restoring/renewing diplomacy and especially about engaging in discussion with iran as a means to move toward stable diplomatic relations. also, uniting foreign aid workers (like me) with military personnel, and expansion of our foreign service in general (particularly to africa)..and i don't just mean money - i mean service. pakistan worries me, though. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  16. every time i think i have this electoral college business down, i don't. i thought the numbers on all the networks (ex: NPR - 162 mccain, 349 obama), with "electoral college" above it were the votes cast by the electoral college? then someone on here said that those were votes for electors for the EC? is the EC legally or otherwise bound to vote according to their respective states' popular votes? wikipedia did what i thought was a good job of explaining this, but now i'm not so sure. boo. je suis très confus(e?)! -thought i'd work on my french while i'm at this learning business! 2 fer 1 Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  17. you with your logic! thank you...that gives me a whole list of things to ponder while i make dinner.
  18. When is the last time your saw a christian white male that was "allowed" to celebrate because of it, yet we have Women's World Records in skydiving and First Black President, First Female VP Dem or Rep. It is not the majority forcing people to see the difference, it is these groups. Just get over it and consider everyone equal. The more differences are drawn attention to, the longer the lines will be clear. that's a pretty standard response, but i don't see how that comparison can even be made. white, christian men have NEVER had to fight for, or been denied their rights. ever. they've been given preference and priveledge since this country's beginnings. of course a group who was once oppressed is going to want to celebrate its achievements when it attains something it was once denied. i have friends whose parents were not able to safely walk the streets not too long ago, while mine could do so with ease. i can't imagine what it would be like to know that only a few decades ago my entire RACE was considered to be inequally human - in the country i was born in, no less, or to endure what african americans STILL endure today: which your post illustrates quite nicely. first oppression, then as that is overcome, we diminish the value of the achievements they make despite that oppression? for the majority of the USA's existence, americans made sure black people knew those racial lines you speak of, and knew them well. but now because all of a sudden you say so, they should forget them? just stop seeing them? what's wrong with having pride? i'll say it again. in 40 years we've gone from segregation and the civil rights movement, to the first african american president. that deserves recognition by EVERYONE. i am SO grateful that i got to see it happen. i don't know of a definition of "recognition" that includes preference. we're not showing preference, or sharpening racial lines by recognizing a black man's triumph, we're just embracing those lines. a line drawn through the middle of a circle is still a line - but 2 EQUAL halves are created. why all the fuss about erasing the racial line? to me, true equality is simply the awareness and acceptance, albeit acquiescent in most cases, of our differences. :sigh: this topic always gets me all riled up. lol. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  19. i understand what you're saying..i totally do. that's the question i've yet to be able to answer for myself. which is more productive (and more realistic): to disregard the achievement, and not label it as an achievement for black people? - because those lines are not supposed to even exist anymore, or to acknowledge the significance of it, but thereby "admit" that the race line exists? i wish i could get the thoughts out of my head and into complete sentences..SO frustrating. i hope you get what i'm trying to say. lol. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  20. ya know..i'll be the first to admit that race IS an issue in this country. its becoming less and less of one, and in a few generations i really believe it won't matter anymore...but not now. it DOES matter. i think it sucks that black people are criticized as much for celebrating their achievements as they are for "not achieving". again, its only been 40 years since the civil rights movement...many people alive today suffered horrible injustices, and for the life of me i cannot understand how one could even suggest that last night's accomplishment is "silly". to go from segregation to a black president in 4 decades is an EXTRAORDINARY feat. i feel that we do a tremendous disservice to ourselves and to our country's history by discounting what's happened in the last 24 hours. obama IS the first black man to become president of our country. he IS the first to accomplish that. it saddens me to know that there are american citizens out there who can deny the significance of this. how? Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  21. this is where i get confused...how can we not honor the occasion for what it is? we did, in fact, elect an african american man into office. why shouldn't we celebrate that?! its momentous. turning it into a negative/hate thing i can understand - but i see absolutely nothing wrong with a little reveling in the fact that, in 40 years, we went from the civil rights movement to the election of obama. what's wrong with acknowledging it? Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  22. i'm being serious when i say that i don't understand the tone of your post. its perfectly obvious to me why they would be crying - this is a momentous occasion for african american people, whether you happen to like those 2 individuals or not. for all of us, in fact. i am SO incredibly proud that i get to be alive to see a black person elected president of this country, so i can't even begin to imagine what they're feeling tonight! why that's being mocked, i won't pretend to understand. i can appreciate obama not mentioning it in his speech - and for this very reason, but c'mon! this is a historic event and i think its complete crap that celebration by the black community is being criticized. ugh. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  23. that's kinda cute! although i don't have the nerve to dress as anything that implies that i'm supposed to be anyone's fantasy lol there's some really good ideas in here! anything involving nakedness is out. a: i'm pretty sure its a major health code violation, and b: about 90% of the ppl that come to my bar are gay men. my nudeness would be completely wasted on them! i need to come up with some drinking games for my bar regulars, too! drink (x) every time a man dressed as sarah palin or cindy mccain walks in the door. ha...10 minutes, and the bar will be down for the count! Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
