Deuce - In about 5 minutes - you are PM'd - "The helicopter approaches closer than any other to fulfillment of mankind's ancient dreams of a magic carpet" - Igor Sikorsky

No. Hell, we can't even keep the smart-asses out of the Women's Only Forum. If your assessment is correct Paul, that's disappointing - Do you feel there are more "smart asses" as you stated in this sport than in other venues, and that this is what makes this difficult?? Heard from a couple of folks via PM, and really appreciate your comments. Makes sense it went to Talk Back - Sorry for the hyper SkyMama/other moderator(s) - TOM "The helicopter approaches closer than any other to fulfillment of mankind's ancient dreams of a magic carpet" - Igor Sikorsky

To the moderator that moved this from the Forum it was posted in, to Talk Back - think that was a bad idea and sort of defeats the purpose of this post - It was directed to a specific audience for comment - "The helicopter approaches closer than any other to fulfillment of mankind's ancient dreams of a magic carpet" - Igor Sikorsky

Shani - Agree - but I think one of the problems is that men feel like they have to ask persmission or are gate crashing to post in the Women's only forum - and doesn't seem to have the balance that I have suggested - On your other note, as a technology person, I can tell you it would be very easy to filter participation in a forum by sex as recorded on the profiles. There would still be room for falsification - but it might provide the kind of privacy for the separate forums you spoke of - Note: Don't know if I could agree with your statement about men's discussions - I discuss relationships quite often concerning the opposite sex with other men - so not sure there would be a lack of that on the men's end - I know of very few, if any men that do not have something to say about either the relationship they are in, or of relationships in general. Question: Does anyone think it is possible to establish a Women&Men's forum without it degrading into some kind of, "sex-fest?" Talk Back threads have been so raunchy - that I am a little amazed it goes on. I'm asking, do you think that women and men can have a place to exchange where better understanding between the sexes could be promoted? I would see that as a benefit both inside and outside of skydiving - for all of us - Can it be done - and will the participants respect the stated direction? We're not talking about just men here as I have seen some incredibly raunchy threads by women as well. I mean, could we put the benefits of such a place over the temptation to make it a high-school thing?? What's everyone think? One of the shortfalls with the "Women's Only" or "Mens Only" approach is when people have to feel like gate-crashers to participate in the conversation - and that would be true of women and men. Perhaps if there was a place that promoted these exchanges and that understanding??? What do folks think? Topics would have to be moderated, most likely - "The helicopter approaches closer than any other to fulfillment of mankind's ancient dreams of a magic carpet" - Igor Sikorsky

Over the past week or so, seen a few newbies post their mistakes, close calls, etc on a thread, and seen a number of experienced people kick the crap out of them. Let's not forget folks: - It's good to make sure someone does not hurt themselves or others. But there is a way to communicate that which is effective. Obnoxious, cutting remarks sent down from SkyGod heaven will not make a flyer - a better flyer. Neither will grinding someone into the ground for poor judgment - Before one lowers the axe on the newbie who comes forward to tell you how they screwed up, let's all remember one thing: This is a daredevil sport. It is not golf, it is not basketball. There is inherent risk here... and most of the time what saves you is good training, but also good judgment. Sure, not news to the experienced here.. so the following... Now how many excellent flyers with hundreds, if not thosands of jumps have slammed themselves into the ground either hooking low, or just plummetting too steep? Folks any time you point a canopy at the ground and make it accelerate we are taking a big chance. And those who have misjudged - even a little in that circumstance, are dead or have been badly hurt. Before we pounce the newbies, let's think about how poor judgment has taken the lives of so many great flyers - even as recently as last week - and keep that in mind with a certain sense of humility when trying to help someone find their way to safer flying. Anything short of that is arrogance - and this sport does not need that. The experienced in the community need to help the up and comings - not hurt. And before the conclusion is drawn that they just don't want to listen to you - check your tone. I have read some unbelievably arrogant statements hurled at folks, and that does NOT make a person want to learn from you. If you have life-saving knowledge, great. If you don't know how to deliver that knowledge so that it does not turn people off with shame or guilt, give your info to someone else who can and let them address the newbies, and just stay out of it. You are hurting the situation, not helping it by closing people off - If you are really concerned, take the person under your wing and help them if you can. Miss a couple of HP trips to jump with someone who could really use your help - If you don't turn them off with insults before you get there - you'll find that most people would really welcome the advice. Remember, every newbie can stand outside the swoop zone and just say as each person spirals down, "they're not going to make it, they-re not going to make it." And eventually, they will be right? Why? Poor judgment and taking high risks. The conservative example is not exactly being set for folks in the sport - There is a huge difference between "tough love" and arrogance. Use the right approach to reach people, and you will make this a safer sport - "The helicopter approaches closer than any other to fulfillment of mankind's ancient dreams of a magic carpet" - Igor Sikorsky

Why would anybody click on a thread called "Sickening"

Must be naive. Didn't even know they had stuff like that - some entertainment! Those kind of sights are the type of images that will stay in your mind, forever. Certainly, 800 x 600 is "safer" and particularly relevant if you are considering the 50/50 you cited. But in truth, you can have it both ways. Design the site in BOTH 800 x 600 and in 1024 x 768. Have your home page at 800 x 600 - with an option to click on to get the higher resolution - which would then redirect the users to the 1024 x 768-designed environment - That might be the best of both worlds for you if you are concerned about pleasing both camps! Mama said, "Rude is, as rude does." Seriously though - folks that are rude on here are usually rude elsewhere as well. I have a friends that are servers at restaurants. As someone who tries to treat everyone well, it does not occur to me that some folks can be just mean. But they can - Sorry for your thread experience. Some custom sound cards install their own volume center - which in effect, replaces what used to be controlled exclusively by the Windows panel. Make sure that your sound card software did not install a volume center of it's own. If it did, you need to make adjustments in there - Also, when you said you installed drivers - did you install the full recommended setup for the sound card - or did you just install the drivers? Some have both - and it may make a difference depending on what the card is looking for - T.B. A couple of things: 1) Are you saying that your Window media player opens, plays wmv files, but not WAV files? What happens when you try to play them. Does it appear to be playing them, or do you get an error message and if so, what does the message say? 2) I saw that you answered the question about the volume control, and saw that you said you checked it. - Just want to be sure we are talking about the same thing here - We're talking about the volume adjustment window where you see several vertical sliders - from left to right named: Master Volume / Wave Balance / SW Synth Balance... etc This is where the wave balance volume control needs to be full up - Also, short of the Service Pack upgrade, I'd suggest you up grade your Windows media player to the latest version. If you upgraded using a Windows 2000 CD, you DEFINITELY do not have the latest version. T.B. Now wait a minute there... us men are definitely not like dogs! For instance - dogs will fart while you are watching TV, very silently, and you don't realize it until it's too late! Then they deny doing it...... er...... ...okay, bad example... "The helicopter approaches closer than any other to fulfillment of mankind's ancient dreams of a magic carpet" - Igor Sikorsky

Where do I sign up Jack? 17 years in IT gotta' count for something!! :) TOM "The helicopter approaches closer than any other to fulfillment of mankind's ancient dreams of a magic carpet" - Igor Sikorsky

That's interesting Brian - never really thought about the engineering side of it specifically as those folks can be in a number of disciplines. More than trusting to a device, I think a lot of IT folks may see the whole damn thing as interesting - while providing a much-needed, bustin' out craziness - Which to me is necessary. I swear there is a large opposite force at work. Sit behind a computer in a safe world (hey, it's not exactly high steel work!) and need to do other stuff to make you know you are alive. Low risk, high risk - any thoughts on that folks? I don't think I ever feel more alive than when skydiving... T.B. As a computer dude, it's been freaky to see how many people that jump out of perfectly good airplanes are somehow connected to IT. Software engineers; IT Consultants and Project Managers (yours truly); Programmers; System Administrators; etc.. Our profiles call ourselves, "Geek," "Wonk," "Nerd," and beyond! What's up with all of us computer folks needing to skydive? Too much time behind the LCD?? :-) Let's hear how you got into skydiving - I'll get the ball rolling with my own story: - Started by flying hang gliders - Earned a fixed wing pilot's license - Earned a helicopter pilot's license - Decided to skydive - Became an SD addict (but still do conventional aviation, helicopter, etc..) Basically, cannot stay out of the air - How about you other IT folks out there? What drives you to this level of insanity (meant in the best of ways, of course!) T.B.
