  1. Yes, it shouldn't have other crap in there, but since it says NOTHING on the label, I wouldn't bet my life on it... "There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss
  2. Well, on the bottle I'm looking at, it says "lait demi écrémé stérilisé UTH," (semi-skimmed milk, sterilised UTH) but there is nothing explaining what it is "made" from... I bought it over a month ago, and the sell-by date is 08 June 2013. It says to refrigerate after opening and is sold on the normal shelves (as opposed to the refrigerated ones)... Hmmm... Kinda makes you wonder, really... ETA - thanks to Bigun for the link on UTH... Still not really convinced it's as good as fresh milk and since it doesn't list its ingredients (on this particular bottle), I cannot believe they don't add anything... I'm sure they would shout it out if it were free of preservatives... 3. If I remember correctly, McDonald's employees are to throw out unsold fries 7 minutes after cooking them. By that point, they are too disgusting for human consumption... Fresh-baked croissants are gross a few hours after they leave the oven... On the other hand, long-life milk can happily live (unopened) outside the fridge for several months... And once opened and in the fridge seems to last for weeks and weeks, passing the sniff-test... What I would like to know is: what the heck are we putting in our food??!!! 4. I donate blood all the time... Should it only go to other people who have previously given blood??? No way. Imagine the waste if it worked that way... 5. I have just called the DVLA and they have told me if I send the old licence back, they can re-issue one without the "115" code (for free), but there is no other way of doing it. Pretty sneaky if you ask me... Nowhere does it say this on their site, or on the NHS Organ Donor site, et cetera. Guess they don't want you to know you can opt out, and they don't want to make it too easy either. Forced consent is not consent, in my opinion. 8. This has not been my experience. Working for large firms that cared A LOT about the bottom line, every time I saw major redundancies, you can bet your bottom that the slackers DID go. I'm not talking about cutting a couple of people here - I'm talking we-need-to-survive-mode... And when it gets down to survival mode, you don't want people just because they are popular. Of course *some* businesses make bad decisions... But a wise company tries to avoid these. Like I said: life is NOT fair. Fucktards and losers and slackers get ahead WAY more than we would like to think. But I'm not convinced dwelling on this fact helps any. 9. I'm not sure I agree with this. Of course you need to document a certain number of things, if only to protect yourself in the unfortunate event that someone is out to get you, or you need to prove your worth... But personally, I think focusing too much on other people takes time away from what *you* should be doing. How can you be efficient if you waste all your energy/time trying to prove this person is not pulling their weight? Do your job. Other people will get ahead through unfair means, but hey... Life is not fair. Do your best and play the game and try to get your good work recognised. You'll go mental if you get upset every time you perceive an injustice - there are simply too many of them out there. You are new to this job; pick your battles wisely... My guess is this guy is not worth your time/energy. 10. I agree that A LOT of people *want* to donate but aren't on the donor list and this is a huge problem. I am in favour of forcing people to decide, but not through sneaky methods, and not by obliging people to *remove* themselves from the "default" donor list and not by suddenly putting them on it. Saying nothing does not imply consent. Donating organs is a great thing, but so is giving your body to science/research (my personal preference because too few people do this and this also saves lives). I don't want this to go into the SC, but if you believe your soul will live in eternal unrest if your body is not buried/burnt/whatever whole, you should not be tricked/forced into organ donation. Bottom line: transparency is key. "There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss
  11. It would seem on the paper form there is a section to fill in whether you want to become an organ donor (see bottom of page 5): http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_179053.pdf, although I don't know how up to date that pdf is. I did my request online, and I went through the entire process a second time (right up to confirming payment - which I didn't do) and was not asked at any point (explicitly or implicitly) about organ donation. 12. I know, I looked this up as well, but it was NOT on my previous driver's licence (from WAY before 2011) and it is on my renewed one. I have double-checked and on the renewal page there is NOWHERE to tick or untick for this option. So again, I am surprised to see it suddenly appear there. Personally, I am in favour of forcing people to choose, but it should be clear and informed consent - not just appear out of the blue without even asking... It also shouldn't be an easy-to-miss already-ticked box (which it wasn't in my case - there was NOTHING). 13. I just got my renewed UK licence and noticed I had a bunch of new codes on it. Among them was code 115, which I had to look up, obviously. Turns out "115" means I am an organ donor. I never stipulated that I wanted to be an organ donor and I am a little surprise (to say the least) to find this had been decided for me... I'm not getting into the debate about my personal beliefs on organ donation, but I wonder how ethical it is to just put it on my licence like that without getting my consent. Thoughts? 14. Whataver the circumstance, I have always found the most dignified and the best long-term solution is to focus on *your* job and make sure *you* get recognised for your work. It may be infuriating to see slack behaviour rewarded, but trust me when I say that in hard times, the slackers are the first to go... I've seen lots of organisations down-size in a tough economy - when companies are choosing the team that will save them from going bust, their only criteria is competence and NOT who is the best ass licker... 19. I am doing a video for work... It's a short, fun series of pictures that show the good/fun times we've shared, and I'm looking for some music to go along with it. We are a dynamic, kooky, fun, upbeat, team-oriented bunch. We really have a great time together and I want the soundtrack to reflect that. I was thinking "celebrate" or "don't stop me now" or "your love keeps lifting me (higher and higher)"... What are your favourite up-beat, fun and/or cheezy, get-up-and-dance songs?? 20. Just downloaded a trial version of Final Cut Pro - it's great to far
  21. Kind of, but much more simple... I've used Premiere Pro and Studio 9 extensively but I'm now usually just doing much more simple stuff and I find imovie / windows live movie maker suits *most* of my needs... Guess I'm cheap... ETA - a lot of my questions are also for our intern, who doesn't seem to know a whole lot given she has a degree in web/graphic-design... 22. I hope I can describe this well since I can't seem to find an example... I would like to do a sequence with words coming at you from different angles, speeds. ie: one word fades in and out in the middle whilst another is scrolling across the screen, et cetera. I am not sure how to do this other than having lots of overlapping titles, but there must be an easier way?? Happy to use other software than imovie if it's free or not expensive and relatively straightforward. 23. How long was that technology kept out of the market? Why aren't more electric cars being sold? Do they cost more to produce?? Do manufacturers think we WANT to keep paying for fuel?? Think about fuel-less motorcycles... Why are SO FEW models available?? Is it harder to make than a fuel-less car?? Somehow I think the answer is no. Maybe I've been mislead and there are other valid reasons why these haven't been rolled out before, but forgive my cynicism if I think A LOT of people have a vested interest in continued fuel consumption... 24. I hope we'll never be able to get younger. Look at the world's population. Growing and growing. Imagine how it would be if we'd live on and on. More people come, less people go. We're supposed to die one day. And for god's sake, we should not try to avoid that... We'd have to build skyscrapers as high, that skydiving would become impossible. I hope it will never get that far! But to refer to your topic. I've thought about it myself several times. For example, I can't believe that we are still driving cars which need that huge amount of fuel and work with such small efficiency. But then I see the connection between car manufacturers and oil groups and suddenly everything seems pretty logic to me. There is no interest in progress. Only if it's asked by the politics. If they'd involve cars that drive on solar energy, they wouldn't get the money which is left from our fossil energy reserves. Money is the key to everything. Sad but true Yep... Whenever a patent comes out for fuel-less cars, they get bought by either oil companies or car companies... Then they collect dust until it's economically advantageous for *them* to do so... Sadly, a lot of innovation gets squashed this way because too much money is involved. As for getting younger, I think delaying or reversing the ageing process could be a good thing in some cases... It wouldn't necessarily make us immortal, but it could significantly improve our quality of life. Imagine, for instance, if Alzheimer's disappeared... Or if elderly people didn't go blind/deaf... Or if breaking a hip was no longer a very big risk... Or if at 85 running a marathon were still possible... If you led an active, pain-free, disease-free life until you just croaked one day... Even simple things like the ability to cure or reverse baldness and/or gray hair and/or wrinkles without the need for radical/risky surgery...
