  1. We have a team event for work coming up, and I have to give an interesting fact about myself that no one else knows about.. I'm struggling.. Is the fact that I've never had a tooth cavity interesting?? It's all I can come up with that wouldn't obviously be associated with me! D'oh! Is it wrong to make something up?? 2. I have found that peeing on it does the job.
  3. True, true mate. But.. Who then is going to take care of doing all my unpleasant shit like laundry, dishes, homework, etc.? And who is going to water my plants? And pay for my meals, and take me to the cinema? And buy me jewellery and gifts? Should I just give all of those important things up because it's cruel?? 4. I again maintain that speeding is NOT safe. Yes, you can *reduce* risks, but the fact remains that on a public road, the risks are borne by not just the individual speeding, but innocent other drivers / pedestrians as well. 5. I said it was hypothetical... Was I so transparent??! "There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss
  6. It's not a right, but in some places in the US, not driving is not really an option either if they want to keep their job. Then again I suppose if they just went on food stamps and welfare, they wouldn't have to drive. Shitty choice either way. Hope I never have to make them. Although I appreciate that driving in the US is *important*, I maintain that in the vast majority of cases, there is no excuse for driving without insurance. As someone already pointed out: if you can't afford insurance, you can't afford to drive. I simply do not accept that you need to drive and you can't afford insurance. I think that 99% of the time this is simply not true. People have options, is all I'm sayin'. When you choose to drive without insurance, you are saying that you are prepared to make someone else suffer severe financial distress and possibly forgo life-saving treatments because of your financial distress. Forgive me if I think this is wrong. Forgo life-saving treatments? No. Even in the US, you'll still get treated, it's the $$$ issue of who and how they get paid, Additionally the person without insurance is taking a large risk as well. Even if they have nothing at the time, should they start to turn things around, win the lottery, or get an inheritance, the insurance company can claim right to a portion of their future income. Really?? So hospitals in the US never turn away patients for expensive treatments when they can't afford them? Never?? Maybe I'm wrong, but what I'm getting at is that when there is an accident where the uninsured driver is at fault they are punishing the victim twice and really fucking them over. I think it's a choice the person made at someone else's expense, and I think it's unacceptable. 7. I agree with everything you said apart from this statement.. Some people are just big softies - not like you or me! But they are still misguided. 8. I created the vote, so I'm clearly biased... I think if someone continues to have a crush on you, it's usually *mostly* because feelings are hard to turn off... But I think it's also quite common for people to encourage the person either because it suits them or because they don't want to hurt the other person's feelings. Either way, I think encouraging someone or stringing them along is either selfish or else misguided - you're not doing them any good... But I'm curious as to what other people think... 10. A hypothetical situation, but I'm sure we've all been there (either as the lov-er or the lov-ee!!)... So someone has a crush on you. You are not interested in them, but they continue to harbour feelings for you. Question: do you play a part in their continuing attraction toward you? Edited: spelling! oops! 11. That video made me sick to my stomach.. As did the one of the bikers.. Saying that speeding is safe is as accurate as saying skydiving is safe. It isn't. You can *reduce* the risks, but it is NOT safe. A public road is not a controlled environment and innocent people are at risk. To me, this is the main difference between doing stupid speeds on a track and doing the same on public roads. And for the record, my objection to extreme speeding (even on well-known stretches of quiet roads) is that for the sake of your fun you are endangering the lives of others. I don't mean you specifically, but the person speeding. 14. Should the fine be so large that a person who is already in a financial crisis has to make the choice between daily survival or car insurance? What if the person lives to far to bike and there are no busses should the person take the risk of said ticket so he/she can support their family? Insurance is not cheap and there are many instances that a person/s in a financial situation will have to make the choice, rent or insurance, medicine or insurance, food for the kids or insurance. People who only see it in black and white have never been put in a situation where they have no food, no electricity, etc. I am not saying it is okay to drive with no insurance I am just saying in some cases I understand why it happens. Although I can see your point, one could also argue that driving is not a *right*. No insurance = no driving. It really *is* that simple. 15. You can't own a Canadian because we are the superior race (we do live North of you), and therefore it makes more sense for us to own an American. Which would be pointless because as the superior race we ourselves would also prefer to own a Canadian!! 17. Couldn't agree more. If for no other reason that it makes him the dipshit and you then walk away without getting unnecessarily worked up over some asshat's little power-trip. 18. Birds gotta fly, fish has got to swim, don't ask him to change who he is. I'm just sayin' it's an option! (And as an accountant, the fact that he would be saving money seems to me like a win-win!! ) "There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss
  19. As obsessed with sex as I am, this has never occurred to me! There is just something TOTALLY unsexy about spreadsheets... 20. Tut, tut... Are you really blaming your ticket on a busted radar detector? Sounds to me like your problem is that you're driving faster than the legal limit!! I know this is going to make me sound like a boring accountant, but... Have you considered just not speeding??! Problem solved! ETA - pay up. Save yourself the hassle of even more problems like going to jail. 21. Ohhhh.. How I have fantasized about smacking someone upside the head violently with a keyboard.. *sigh*.. I also like the idea of duct-taping someone's hands to their desk (thus making the beating-with-keyboard easier and more satisfying!). 22. I don't know... If I had kids, I imagine I would feel very much the same... I know that my best friend, who is EXTREMELY reliable, trustworthy, etc., would NEVER ask me for a loan, but if she needed it I would give her one in a heartbeat *and* I'd be delighted to help her out. Funnily enough, I'm sure she wouldn't hesitate to lend me money as well if I needed it, but I also wouldn't ask! Anyway John, it seems like your kids respect you and are reasonable in their requests. That's the main thing, isn't it?
  23. I'm not convinced he didn't just step on the wrong pedal - a relatively easy thing for a newbie to do by accident. But I *do* think that going to jail for a mistake that seems to boil down to being a new driver is a bit harsh - even given the hugeness of its impact. 24. Ooooh, I need you to talk to my kids. Until your children are grown ups, I think it's normal and prudent to look after them and try to make provisions in case something happens, but adults who are physically capable of working should earn their own damn money and not mooch off their parents. I would hate for my parents to suffer because I, as an adult, couldn't get my act together. Now that my siblings and I are all adults, I think my parents should die happy and penniless as opposed to worn-out and tired from scraping enough savings to leave behind an inheritance. I suppose there are circumstances where a loan from them might be acceptable, but for me this would be the very LAST resort.
