Just for your info, since there is some confusion regarding the AWB and the sunset. If you live in a free state that has no ban of its own here is what is and what will happen. Right now the AWB bans manufacture and possession of 19 named rifles and semi auto rifles if they have a detachable magazine and more than one of these 'evil' features: a folding or collapsable stock, a flash hider or a barrel threaded to accept one, a pistol grip, a bayonet mount or the abilty to mount a grenade launcher. It also bans magazines with a capacity of more than ten rounds. These rifles and magazines are legal to possess if they were manufactured in AW config and possessed before the date of the ban. I dont know thw all the names that were banned but AR15 and AK47 are two. I believe FNC is another. On the morning of Sept 13th at 12:01 am they will all be legal again in the free states. Its unlikely you will see 'AR15' on a rifle because Colt owns the name and they are weenie dicks too scared to use it "I think". Otherwise those names become legal again. You can have any rifle, with any or all features on it if you want. All magazines and rifles marked "Law Enforcement Only" are legal to possess. The markings are irrelevant if the rifle is otherwise legal ie not NFA or dealer sample etc. Certain weapons are covered by a different ban. 922R the "import ban" which bans many rifles not deemed for 'sporting' purpose. Thats why you cant buy a Russian AK. The receiver has to made in the USA and there is a requirement for x number of US parts in the rifle for it not to be considered "imported". This is no big deal there are many US dealers taking imported demilled parts kits and using their own receivers and US parts and building rifles. Some are very good and they are covered by the AWB as well but come Sept they are allowed all the evil features. Chinese weapons CANNOT be imported due to an executive order signed by GB1. That is too bad because Norinco makes some great M1 and 1911 copies. Hope that helps. I know its confusing. I am not a lawyer take this advice like anything on the internet.

If you want a collapsable stock you'll have to change the buffer to a carbine tube and weight. A1 is the way to go. Cavarms make a stock the same length called the C1 and it comes in any color.

Ever see the 100 round barrel mag for the M-4? Jammed a lot, but what a rush. Beta-C mags some cool factor if your into that but you're right about the reliability. Only if I had a 16 but then I'd get a Shrike. Its a belt fed upper for ARs and uses M249 pouches or regular mags. It drops right on an AR lower. See Ares Defense. I may get one anyway if I can dig up three grand.

That's a really good question. I hadn't thought of it, but I would like to add the flash suppressor and bayonet lug to my post-ban AR-15... I wonder if it's a simple thing to put add-ons on... - Easiest way to do that is a barrel swap. Threading a barrel and changing a front sight is gunsmith work. A barrel swap is a ten minute job with a vise, receiver block and armorer's tool. I've built three ARs and its quite simple. ETA: I forgot you need a roll pin punch to re and re the gas tube. As far as the mini goes its a different animal because it has no pistol grip. Without a PG it can already have another evil feature like folding stock or flash hider or bayo lug. After the sunset, go nuts but I recommend you by an AR.

Sorry no Norinco for you. Still banned under 922R. No Chinese parts kits or firearms can be imported. Too bad, you can buy good Norinco M1 Garand copies in Canada for less than 400CAN. As a matter of fact all AK variants are banned from import. You can have one built on an imported parts kit on a US made reciever, complying of course with the US parts count rule. Ohio Rapid Fire is building milled AK receivers that are schweet! They have the parts kits as well if you want to roll your own or else they'll build one up for you.
