... always thought that "sport parachuting' began in the 60's..... though i Know that people were 'skydiving' with military surplus gear...before then.. But DZ's... sport clubs, recreational jumping?? '60's..... back in the day.... would seem to me, to be defined by the Time before B Booth introduced the Wonderhog, the 3 ring release and the hand deployed Pilot chute...ALL 3 , significant milestones... That was in the early to mid 70's.. i enjoyed 1,000 jumps on "gutter gear".... chest mounted reserve High performance Rounds,, ( now there's an oxymoron for ya' ) and spring loaded M A 1 pilot chutes.. between '72 and '79..... at that point. quite a few folks had switched to "piggyback rigs", though they were large and bulky and heavy.. I was always comfortable with a reserve that was located where I could SEE it,, AND where i could put my HANDS on it....so i was veeery slow to transition to either a pig... OR a square main... ( saw LOTS of my pals, get hurt with 'rings & ropes' squares, before the lines got shorter, and sliders came around....) once gear improvements caught up with the sport, and everything moved to our backs, and TRAINING techniques, bean to change AWAY from static line to Tandem and AFF ... i would say, THAT marks the time frame,,, from "back in the day".. to the gradual growth to our current "state of the art" my $.02 jmy A 3914 D 12122

Re: 'crazy tight fit' new to you rig..... main fits really tight... sounds like the classic prelude to " I better get a SMALLER canopy" ," since this container won't carry the one i have"..... WHAt size Main ?? is the Rig designed for????...Did it COME with the main??/ or are you trying to fit Your current canopy into it??? is the rig new?? or second HAnd?? either way ,, it Should come with an OWNERS' manual.... good luck... jmy -

"direct bagged" out of a 5 gallon plastic pail.... Really.... not jeb... i think it was troy hartman... and Yes.. the canopy material disintegrated as the ribs, and binding tape, and suspension lines hung in there.... until it's aerodynamicity !!!! ( there's a good word for ya' ) deteriorated to the point that it all collapsed and started falling out of the sky... pretty cool, as i remember seeing it... On Stunt Junkies???? maybe....?? jt

3,176 jumps Six reserve rides, but only 2 cutaways.. once on "shot & a halves", once on 3 rings... Crisscrossed suspension lines on a H P Round,,, french papillon, for the shot and a halves ( moved a packed canopy, in its P.O.D., into my container,, without re packing it,,,crossed something up, as i hooked up the risers.. approx 1975...) tied up steering lines/ tension knots on the second cutaway Para Plane Cloud, in a wonderhog. For the other 4 reserve rides, 2 were from totals, ( inability to reach the PC handle ) One was a P C I T/ horseshoe and one was a " straight to reserve" deployment after having right shoulder disclocated on an exit... I always felt that 0ne in one thousand... is just about right...For cutaways!!! enter in, other problems, malfunctions and possibilities,, the ratio of jumps to reserve rides,,, may drop to 1 in 500 or maybe even 1 in 300. jmy

Obese students forced to take fitness class
jimmytavino replied to ltdiver's topic in Speakers Corner
i was school kid ,,, back 45 years ago or more,,, when J F K started "the Presidents Council on Physical Fitness"... we did jumping jacks. til we were dizzy, and saw lots of Phys Ed programs started, which ( for me ) was a fun thing.... i always enjoyed "gym Class". and running around and excersizing always appealed to me... What happened???? Now such classes are "scaled back" due to budget constraints, or plain old disinterest on the part of students AND school administrators... Today Physical activity at school, seems limited to those who Join a sports team. others... are content with the "thumb-numbing" approach,, achieved by video games and P S 3.... done while snacking on junk, and slugging down, high sugar soft drinks ... JFK would be quite disappointed...as am I... With everything we now know, about obesity, heart disease, the negative impact of sugar, and more advanced medical intervention... THIS sort of issue, SHOULD be dealt with, in Grade school,, and certainly NOT College.... jmy -
having started , by the static line method, and being part of a large group of enthusiastic jumpers, we seldom sent the plane above 5, Five...during the first year or two of my jumping history.. There were tooo many jumpers wanting to make one or two, and so the cessna(s) hopped up and down quickly, often just to 3 grand for 3 fast SL turns, and a JM doing a H & P. "those of us, who were freefalling" seemed content to do 20 seconds from 5,500 feet, so that the next load could get up... my log book shows my first jump at 7, 500 feet was my jump # 59, and when i hit 100 jumps only 7 of them had been to 7-Five.......LOTS of jumps @ 3 grand to 5 grand... Jumps # 101 to 500 saw me make 152 lifts, to Seven Five. # 501 to 600 added 71 more... 601 to 1,000 had 268 jumps to Seven Five or higher. I logged maybe a dozen jumps only,,,,which were above 11 grand, in all my first 1,000. First time i ever logged, a skydive @ 13,500 was in Limerick Pa, at the Herd Boogie/ Skyvan Boogie...

Do You Keep a Diary? Would You Want it Read After You Pass Away?
jimmytavino replied to PLFXpert's topic in The Bonfire
well.... my log books are a diary of sorts, and the ones with some "room to write", for each jump, let me make as many comments, as i want. i sometimes read, from old logs and smile about names and places, and people whom otherwise may have become forgotten. for work, i start a spiral notebook, each january, which winds up being a diary of who and what and where.. Mosty use it for telephone messages. names, Numbers etc. the ones which grow into jobs, will include other details, until the work evolves into a 'job folder'. i save them all, and can refer to them as needed,,, ( my idea of a P A D ) diaries with intimate details, should NOt be read or shared, IMO, without the expressed approval of the author. it's just being respectful of a persons' privacy jmy -
roger that......my bad.. Hmmmm beautiful Wife?,,,, And she's funny??? AND she adores you???? I can tell that YOu adore her.....too.. It's true what they say,,, that "still waters run deep", and it's more about what is inside... than what is outside...( although Chemistry IS important...) anyway... good deal... carry on. Nat.... you'll be fine... just stay open to ALL possibilities...ya' never know..... jmy

i dunno...... college humor??? huh??? i must be real Old School,,,,, but i don't find that funny.... well thought out... and planned maybe.. but not funny... i hate conspiracies, where One person is the butt of a joke... yuck yuck How about the possibility of the TM taking a nice litlle whipping across the face, from the "fake" ripcord cable??? Damn... a guy wants to "meet the challenge" and make himself a Tandem jump.... and winds up.. with THAT sorta experience... screw that... sorry i can't be more accepting of this type of idiocy... lets leave the dormitory pranks.... on campus... Kids today..... sheesh.. I also have little tolerance for the usual tandem 'jokes' that occur, between TM's camera people, and unsuspecting students.. such as " asking the Tm if he took his seizure medicine,,, or "How are those blackout episodes going"? etc etc.. Those who advocate such silliness, are being elitist, and condescending, and fall into the category of UN professional IMHO.. Skydive LongIsland....HUH????? hmmmm.... but whadduiknow??? jmy uspa 9452 A 3914 D 12122
