Sounds like you haven't met the right ones!! I just saw this thread, Slurp56 gave you some good info. I don't think the guy was trying to hose you, stuff like that is just normal wear & tear. It was definitely time for a timing belt!!! Big bucks if it breaks as was pointed out, that's an important part of the preventive maintenance. Think of it in terms of repacking your reserve.
