Florida mandates teaching that slavery had benefits to blacks
jakee replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
Coming from the undisputed king of the petty grudge I’ll take that with a pinch of salt. I also flatly did not say that he saluted the outcome, so maybe give your own fevered imagination a break before you trigger yourself again. However, Winsor has a long history of racist statements and attitudes on this site. Heck, given that he claims only racists focus on race, pretty much the only thing he ever posts about is race relations. And everything in my post stands. He did say Till was responsible for his own death. He did say it was simplistic to view it otherwise. He did say that the response should have been for the black community to forswear racist violence. Since you failed to specify, which bit of that do you think I got wrong? And personally, given his history, I absolutely do believe the message of that first post far more than the ‘woe is me I’m so misunderstood’ denials of what he very clearly did say. -

Right, you make one little post saying a lynching victim was responsible for his own death, claim that it’s simplistic to view Till’s death as just a racist murder, and say that the response to the brutal murder of a black man by white men for being black should have been for the black community to forswear racist violence… and all of a sudden people think you said something bad! I sympathise with your frustration. -
Ok that needs to be illegal. Like not just libel illegal but really specifically illegal with strong penalties.

That’s so crazy, Emmett Till’s killers were misunderstood too! They weren’t racist, they liked black people and were never violent to them!* Just, y’know, sometimes they needed to be reminded of their place. So you’re in good company. * Literally exactly what they said. -

Yeah, but at least the final paragraph was worse. -
Ooooh I see what happened. You meant to say every time there happen to be no tropical storms will be met with cries of NO CLIMATE CHANGE by the science deniers. (What is the probability that there will be a tropical storm happening at any given time, by the way?)

Will it? Isn't every hurricane thread in every hurricane season started by you? I don't actually know if that's true but it certainly feels like it is.

Well that’s an obvious lie designed to deflect criticism of racism. It shouldn’t be lost on anyone that the above conclusions are only possible if you accept the words of two heinous racist murderers as being implicitly true. I wonder what else could be classed as suicide using the same logic though? Beaten woman tries to leave her husband? Suicide. Firefighter in a burning building? Suicide. Shopkeeper tries to stop paying protection to the mob? Suicide. Every Iranian protester this year? Suicide. Any American soldier in a foreign field? Suicides all of them. Thank goodness there are some people in this world who, unlike Winsor, are willing to stand up for themselves even when someone or something makes it dangerous. -

I'm sure Emmett Till would have fought back if he could. So I think we can all agree on the night he was murdered that there was violence on both sides. -
Who do you think they are? What do you think ‘elite’ means? Is success (and by extension capitalism) a bad thing?

Gotta love this one. Twitter under Musk is now suing the law firm that Twitter used to force Musk to buy Twitter, for overcharging. Because... Musk says his legal arguments at that time were so bad that it was incredibly easy for any set of Twitter lawyers to beat him, therefore there was no reason to charge a premium rate fee. Got that? No, I'm not sure I do either ;p He's also claiming that Twitter acted dishonestly by failing to follow an instruction by him not to pay the lawyers... when both the instruction and the payment happened before he became the legal owner of Twitter and before he had any say in the matter. Do any of our resident fanboys still think this is part of the master plan?

Not that DeSantis has a snowball’s chance of getting the nomination anymore… but how on earth does he figure going for the KKK vote is going to help him reach the White House? Any national campaign this would be something that ought to kill him with swing voters, right?

‘The point is intimidation’: Florida teachers besieged by draconian laws It's all part of the same campaign. -
There’s no slavery anymore? Like… at all?

The bit I don’t understand is how it goes from sections that some guys just made up because it sounds good to sections that are the absolute and definitive truth about human existence. I’m not really sure how you figure out which is which.

Maybe actually say that next time then? You were directly replying to this statement "What Genesis is missing is good science." with the comment "Hmmm, that's pretty much the opposite of what most astrophysicists are saying today." Can you see what people are gonna think you mean? I really don't think you need to bring up planck time to see the problem with the statement that God created the heavens and the earth*... and then light. Seems a bit redundant. * And water too, by the way. Before there was light. But yeah, planck and photons. Sure.

Post trump Legal Actions, Including his Enablers
jakee replied to Phil1111's topic in Speakers Corner
Remember Trump’s supporters all cheered when he said the cops should feel free to rough people up like they used to? Hit their heads on the roofs of police cars and all that? The Q Shaman says part of the reason he plead guilty was that he’d spent a very short while in solitary confinement, which he called ‘soft torture’. Seriously. These right wing assholes cheer the idea of cops beating confessions out of suspects, but when the shoe is on the other foot then suddenly being left alone in a cell counts as torture. What a bunch of grade-A fucking snowflakes. -
Hand wringing….. activate! I see no reason why we should demand the war be fought exclusively on Ukrainian territory. Russia is facilitating the war through numerous logistics hubs inside its own territory, and directly waging war from numerous airbases within its territory. These are legitimate targets. We know that every one of Putin’s red lines will be crossed sooner or later, and we (almost certainly) know that when they’re crossed he won’t actually do anything, just like he hasn’t done with any of the previous ones. So let’s just get it over with. Then you’re just, again, denying the reality that is in front of your face. What US approval did the UK need to supply Challengers and Germany to approve Leopard supply, when the US was still refusing Abrams even in principle? What approval did the UK need to supply Storm Shadows when the US still hasn’t agreed to supply anything comparable in range? The EU does need (and has been begging for) the US approval it legally requires to re-export F16s…. and still nothing. If you wanna suggest solutions, you have to be honest about the problems first.
-
Well there's a meaningful response. Care to elaborate? There is definitely a problem across the entire coalition of taking this 'boil a frog' approach of gradually ramping up the range and offensive capabilities of weapons systems supplied to Ukraine. However it has for some time now been the US that is consistently dragging its heels and wringing its hands, and Europe which is trying to steer it in a more proactive direction. If some European countries had their way the Ukrainian counteroffensive would be receiving cover from the first operational F16 squadrons about now, but thanks to the US that'll probably have to wait until at least next year.
-
Glad to see you’ve finally caught up with reality after a year of insisting that the US is supplying everything that could be useful. Oh, now you’re back in your imaginary world. Europe has lead the way in supply of heavier and longer range weapons at almost every turn. Europe supplied Storm Shadow / Scalp cruise missiles. Europe supplied main battle tanks. Europe has been pushing for F16 export licences to be granted since the start of this year. The best thing that could possibly happen for Ukraine is for the USA to stop its hand wringing and get with the European program.

Traficing minors not that big of a deal in California.
jakee replied to BartsDaddy's topic in Speakers Corner
I didn’t say you couldn’t post it, I said it was out of date. And when the thing you’re complaining about is no longer the case, your post IS out of date. It DOES carry a huge punishment. 15 to life IS a huge punishment. Therefore it IS a big deal. -
And yet you always support the GOP and always attack liberal Democrats. So it’s kinda hard to believe that your point is what you say it is.

First off, your post is already out of date. Second, it's already punishable by 15 to life (with any kind of aggravating factor such as coercion, which I would assume is almost always present). That sounds like a big deal to me. Do you want to volunteer to be locked up for 15 years just to show how easy it is?
