what was the worst container youve ever jumped?

hi everyone! i was only wondering..
IanHarrop replied to virgin-burner's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Try a first jump course. As for mindset, I don't think you'll find any single mindset across the sport. People get into it for different reasons and stay in for different reasons. so, why do YOU do it then? Because I am addicted and too weak to give up the skydiving drug Edit tio add: http://www.dropzone.com/content/Detailed/519.html read this "Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy -

Think of it this way. In an airplane, the lift generated by a wing has to lift the weight of the airfreame, including the wing, not just the passengers in it. "Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy

I've been watching and smiling while this thread has played out, but this last statement is this first one I've been compelled to respond to because now I have a dilemma. "Stop taking advice from DZ.com period." If I take you advice I have to not take your advice.... Reminds me of an old StarTrek episode when Spock confused an android. Edit: It might have been Kirk - memory fades, I am 50 you know. Just in case anyone wants to know: I don't do barrel rolls, I don't use a mirror, and I track like my life depends on it because it does "Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy

what was the worst canopy youve ever jumped?
IanHarrop replied to caspar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
25 years ago or so I had a Merlin. 90% of the time I loved that canopy. It opened fine, it flew fast and I could land it on a dime. BUT about 10% of the time it would have some weird thing happen with the lines on the left side (a tension knot I assume) and I'd have a spin. Fortunately it wasn't one of today's small canopies so it didn't spin like a mother f@#$er and if I fought with the lines I could get it to clear... most of the time. Of course it did it the one and only time my parents ever came out to see me jump. But like I say most of the time I thought that canopy was the cat's ass and loved it. Packed it the same every time and after it I landed I could never find anything wrong even when I had to land with the right side in half brakes so I'd be going straight. Never did chop that thing "Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy -
Andrew is right about UPS being the worst international shipper. I believe that the statement "fuck you in the ass with brokerage fees" is specifically written into the UPS policy manual because they do it consistently. Lat year I bought a product, the US seller - a company, would not ship any other way other than UPS. It was a $30 item plus $20 for shipping. When it got to Canada UPS charged me an additional $30 for brokerage fees to shepherd it through customs. Funny things was there were no customs fees. Nope the feds didn't want any money for bringing it into Canada, but UPS sure did. They followed the "fuck you in the ass with brokerage fees" policy to the letter. So my $30 item ended up costing $80. I would rather have used USPS. "Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy

One of the problems rental gear can have is leg padding that has seen better days and that does not get replaced. Once you're on your own equipment you have control over maintenance. "Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy

Hmm. might have to so this. My Pilot 188 the only thing that is readable at all is the hand written stuff serial et al. All the other words have become unreadable and its only got 225 jumps on it. Is buying your child birth control supporting/encouraging sex?
IanHarrop replied to Conundrum's topic in Speakers Corner
Unfortunately none of us will be there when the moment of passion raises its ugly head and we have little control of whio our sons and daughters will be with at that moment, so a conversation may not take place in the 2 minutes the accelerator goes from 30 mph to 150 mph. All we can do in reality, no matter how much our kids tell us they will talk more before they do the actual deed, is hope that we've instilled enough responsibility in them that they won't have unprotected sex. Where can I find diagram/photos on packing?
IanHarrop replied to dropzone_moron's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
There used to be a good tutorial on packing on Sid's Rigging site. http://www.sidsrigging.com/skydivers/skydivers_index.htm The link is currently broken but he also sell the tutorial for cheap. http://www.cafepress.com/sidspecialties.5768447 "Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy -
Commercial air travel with a parachute
IanHarrop replied to jpsmith's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Sometime in the last year the CATSA site was updated and now states: --- Skydiving rigs with and without Automatic Activation Devices are permitted as carry-on or as checked baggage. Parachute-related equipment, such a gas cylinders, are classified under dangerous goods, thereby prohibited from both carry-on and checked baggage. More importantly, parachutes are also subject to the general restrictions on size and weight (ie. whether they can be safety stowed as carry-on) and the restriction on the number of pieces of carry-on. Please contact your air carrier for more information. --- Not sure what their concern with gas cylinders is... The thing has been withdrawn ... "The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the listing." I think more than ome of us told him about the error, or least he told me a number of us had. "Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy

Commercial air travel with a parachute
IanHarrop replied to jpsmith's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Do you have any details about this? Which airlines? Checked or carry-on? I haven't had any problems with Air Canada, so far, All I could find in a search was a few references to overly zealous security screeners in Canada, and in Sydney Australia from a few years ago. No first hand knowledge, but the most problem recent I heard about I think was with WestJet sometime in the last year, that I believe was discussed on CSPA chat. I think it was a group of SARTECs going to Eloy for training that ended up having to leave their gear in Winnipeg. That's my recollection, could be wrong. Commercial air travel with a parachute
IanHarrop replied to jpsmith's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In some places it is not as cut and dried as it is in the USA. In Canada there have been issues where airline regulations were tougher than the CATSA and superseded them, making it difficult to travel with rigs. I wasn't there but I would suggest that, since the RSL isn't mandatory, I have a hard time believing the Skyhook will be. Perhaps someone was speculating on what they thought might be a good idea and someone else over heard it. BUT as I said I wasn't there... this is just my opinion.
