  1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmV13eB0fa0 Men build things, then we die. it's in our fucking DNA. THAT'S WHAT WE DO! best most awesome shitty movie ever. I don't think it is religious propaganda at all. I fucking hate stereotypical christians. It seems to me these characters are "devout" only as characters and push it on nobody in the audience or other characters in the film. if anything, they are making fun of the devout stereotypical christian, and embracing what religion and spirituality should be about, the good of the people, not the will of god. -SPACE-
  2. anyone tried the ZMC-DS5 from panasonic? I really want bulb function shutter on a compact camera. this one gives 60 seconds per the manual. -SPACE-
  3. I believe that the feds said they would not go after MMJ users/suppliers as long as they were within the laws of their state. meaning if you're outside the state laws, as in if you have more than an ounce on your person (too much as far as Colorado is concerned), you are in the hands of the federal fuz and the state would have no motivation to try and protect you because you were breaking state law. -SPACE-
  4. at most it would make a loud whistle. I have landed several single engine airplanes and been around several that have intentionally been landed with the engine off and propeller stopped (stopping the prop is somewhat difficult on some planes, it wants to windmill) -SPACE-
  5. Even if he did have those kind of instruments, that would be a bad idea. If your windshield is covered in oil, you need to get on the ground at the first available opportunity. Not just because you're blind, but because your engine is probably going to be short on oil. report said they lost the propeller. I would assume it was an engine out situation.
  6. not on the spot like that, for a small plane. glide is usually less than 10/1. crappy situation for the dude on the beach, but not the pilots fault unless he missed something in the preflight that could have stopped them from flying.
  7. a few months ago I did a 1080p ContourHD vs GoPro HD week, both cameras mounted on my helmet skydiving, speed flying, speed riding, and paragliding. through sky and on snow, and darker conditions. Go Pro wins most categories, due to considerably superior picture quality, available frame rates, and wide angle lens. still pictures are pretty nice also. the categories won by the Contour were the sleek low profile look and lower snag potential and ease of use on the spot. I very much prefer the GoPro, the contour burns out in the snow, allegedly this can be changed while hooked up to a computer. GoPro does it automatically. -SPACE-
  8. These WWII planes are beautiful, so sad there are so few and dwindling. I wish more aircraft would emerge with the same planform, HUGE motor, (sometimes) dual seats, and low wing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilatus_PC-21 A P51 is cool and all, but I would much rather have a PC-21. same op costs.
  9. bro I'm with ya, but both still post here. super lame. we're super lame.
  10. kiss.... well... no. but yes, I would love to make up. not that we were in a fight, I just blew it way out of proportion. my fault. also, he is not a twatmuppet. I was just pissed and picked an insult. It IS a great insult, but lets leave it to people who deserve it.
  11. Kinda wished I had not posted it, and kinda hoping the thread fades away. Thanks ufk22. Since reading this thread I have figured out what I got wrong, I think. First and most importantly I was under the impression that me under the velo 111 wsa not that far of a stretch for a jumper with ~500 jumps loaded at 1.35. I was explained the Germain equation and learned that it was a long stretch. My bad. Though my time under similar size and performance ground launch canopies in what I consider more demanding circumstances is not considered expressly helpful in the skydiving environment (at least to this group helping me online now and the jumper who blew me off)in your eyes, I am still just a 500 jump muppet. -note that I understand the following means nothing in the opinion of you or any other skydiver in me flying this canopy- the fact that I "do not swoop" simply means that I do not intentionally do 360 turns and build tons of speed at the ground and try to surf for long distances. On the other hand, some would consider what I do with similar canopies "swooping", only nothing more than a 90 or 180 turn to bring myself close to terrain, and almost never to land. I feel I have full understanding of the "dive recovery" and heading lock of the canopies I fly. My statement of "I do not swoop" really only means I do not do a huge turn and go for the gates and then distance and speed on any landing. I concentrate on fluid mountain lines and airborne acro. further, and again I understand that this has no bearing whatsoever on my eligibility to regularly skydive a velo 111, I regularly foot launch a 10m or 12m Ozone Bullet or Bullet GT 9.8 (90^2' projected, essentially a 90 square foot canopy) with 10 or 15 pounds of ballast and sometimes skis. (making my loading there 1.66-1.88) on a fully cross braced fully elliptical flattened canopy. finally, people have referenced my info in my profile on here, "conifer bandit DZ" etc. that is my home town, and my friends and I regularly jump into there. the altitude of the different LZs is 7800-9,800' MSL and we almost always use .58-.77 wing loadings there. hope this thread goes away and I don't get my ass kicked when I show up at the DZ this weekend. peace.
  12. Well, then I guess I should thank the guy for keeping me alive and the DZ in business. Thanks for the help, I will talk to him about it if I see him next weekend. normally I jump a Stilletto 120 or a Saber 150(WS). so, probably will not have this problem again.
  13. The problem is that you didn't ask anything about flying a Velo, and by virtue of having an unpacked one over your shoulder, you already had. Then you asked how to pack it, which is very basic info a pilot qualified to fly a Velo would have. Imagine if a pilot showed up to your GL site with the highest performance speed wing they make. Picture this guy, in your experiecned eyes, acting like a moderately experienced pilot, not an expert pilot. Then, to top it all off, he asks you a question that should be common knowledge and key to piloting such a glider, such as, "Hey, how do you launch these little wings, with brakes or rear risers?". That's essentailly the situation for the guy who spoke to you. Imagine the other sceanrio, and you mention to the guy he might be out of his league with that wing, wouldn't your opinion change if he said to you, "I know it's a small wing, but I'm a professional swooper, and my normal canopy is even smaller then this. I've got 5000 jumps, and am a high performance canopy competitor and coach". It changes the picture, and probably your attitude towards the guy. You could have done the same, and changed the other guy's attitude towards you. I did ask the owner of the rig and a jumper on the load about flying the canopy. I DO see your point, but I was asking the guy for a packing tip. even as far as normal non-GL experienced norms go, I do not think I was out of my league jumping this canopy at 1.35 wing loading (with 500~ jumps and 200 on small canopies). was I? I feel a more appropriate hypothetical scenario would be myself at the bottom of the Speed flying hill packing up my glider, when a moderately experienced pilot asks me the cleanest way to lay out a moderately advanced glider for launch. Maybe I made too big a deal about it, and that is my fault.
  14. I am no badass GL pilot, I can hold my own on skis and foot with a glider, but not on the level of most team pilots or European pilots. I read your post, and I appreciate the honesty. I agree, the best course of action would have been to confront him about it, and not bitch on dorkzone. I felt that he was not trying to hurt my feelings, just trying to massage his. of course I know about canopy incident being the only way to likely get hurt anymore. and of course I know mid air logistics and rules. I know and respect more than anyone out there the need to be aware under canopy, in a full 360 degree sphere. I just lost my best friend to an asshole not paying attention. Also, I am obviously not a heavy guy. soaking wet I could be 150. but I am 135-140. I was quick to communicate that I do not swoop and I am lightweight. As for "acting like I have 500 jumps", I have no idea what they think of me. at that DZ I am known for my paragliding and speed riding. When I put the rig on, everyone on the load knew I was jumping it, and no one said a word. never jumping a velo before, I even asked a velo pilot if there was anything I should know. "you are light, just don't over-correct the opening" was the reply. I pulled high (after declaring I would) and landed away from the student LZ, and was commended by the DZ Manager for following proper approach patterns. So, thanks, I see that I could be slightly to blame for "acting like I have 500 jumps". -SPACE-
  15. I maintain that he was not obnoxious, or even rude in the sense of normal human interaction, but I feel he was out of line. All he had to answer with is "you do nothing abnormal packing a Velocity". Instead he decided to puff his chest and furl his assfeathers. I even would have understood and thought little of it if he had sat me down and talked about canopy piloting and wing loading. he attached his entire answer to a number that myself and other feel is within the adequate experience limits of the equipment I was using. I was not jumping a 69' canopy, I was PACKING a 110' canopy. I also admit I am here for justification in being surprised at this interaction with another jumper. I teach speed flying, and If someone comes at me with questions about flying 6m gliders (65'^2!) in their first month of flying, I will never tell them "I will not teach you anything, go away" I will explain what happens, talk with them about it, give them a flight on one of my smaller gliders within their safe range, see where their skill level is at, and make my decision and advise then.
  16. I plan on doing just that, only next weekend I'll do a few wingsuit jumps and if he is there I will talk to him. I feel bad going on dorkzone and bitching like a baby instead of doing this just then.
  17. I have no problem when people sincerely have safety in mind, but this had nothing to do with safety.
  18. you kinda leaned that one to favor your POV, but ok, I see you're on his side. All I asked this guy was how to pack it. It was a blatant "You are not cool enough to be in this hangar" move. -SPACE-
  19. How can you call it ignorance when he based his answer on your lies? you might need to look up the definition of ignorance I hardly see rounding 530 down to "500 or so" as a lie, and if I had said 1000 he would have done the same thing. I could tell he had his answer picked out before I asked the question. after the fact, a jumper who overheard mentioned my speed flying experience and that I do not swoop, he said something along the lines of "does not matter, too inexperienced"
  20. I honestly cannot take credit for that insult, I wish I could, but my BASE friend used it describing something unrelated and I stole it. sure is brilliant though. twatmuppet. -SPACE-
  21. I was told by several other jumpers in the area that heard the conversation "not to worry about it" because the guy can be a skygod deuchebag. I had just, never came across such an obvious example. He was not "rude", sure, I said and meant it. It was just misplaced "advice". I kinda want to meet the guy, formally I mean. I was told he is #4,5? in the world swooping. I would like to fly with him someday. and feel bad I did not confront him at the time. I was just taken aback by, well, arrogant ignorance. -SPACE-
  22. yeah, I figured that out after I posted this, started as a rant, will end as my getting flamed. whatever. also, was bored writing my thesis so more proof that boredom is dangerous. -SPACE-
  23. I jumped a Velocity 110 the other day, it was the canopy on a borrowed rig. I followed all the rules, everything went well. I do not swoop, and did not on this jump. (I have about 150 jumps on a stilletto 120, vengance 107, and countless flights on smaller speed gliders, all those landing on SMALL lz rough terrain at high altitude on foot ) After landing I asked a group of more experienced swoopers if there is anything special I should do packing a velocity. (as I wanted to give it back to owner packed, of course) a very experienced swooper answered me "how many jumps do you have?", "500 or so" I replied, even though I have more than that, just rounded down. (including BASE jumps >1100) "I am not going to help you, I do not think you have the experience to be jumping that advanced of a parachute" was all I got. He was not rude, very honest, but that is irrelevant. I weigh 150pounds WITH a rig on, and if you include ground launches I probably have just as many small cross braced canopy landings than he does. I feel completely comfortable jumping something that small. in all reality it felt less twitchy and far more forgiving than other stuff I have flown. I just wanted to know how to pack it. A very nice jumper walked up and told me I did nothing special packing that canopy, and not to worry about the one who answered. Just annoying because I feel this happens a lot, and the main reason I got out of skydiving regularly. Got a rig again, and want to start being at the DZ more than once a month, but this, again, makes me rethink it.
