I'm sorry to hear that your friend was that close. It is sad that so many lives were lost, most of which had minimal acceptance of the risks. It should not have happened.

Anyone able to find any quality, close up video of the airplane and impact? All the vids I can find are a long way off or the photographer turned away for the moment of impact.

I think the mindset of the pilots and the aircraft's support/design/maintenance play a huge factor in the difference between the two. I agree that they are fairly similar, but I would consider the dangers of an air race significantly higher than an air show simply because everyone involved in the race is there to go as fast as possible, as well as put on a good, safe show. -SPACE-

Are you kidding or just clueless? I was kidding. I am commenting on the people who are amazed and appalled that anyone is ever killed by accident. What did these people expect to happen? It does not take an aerospace degree to figure out that being anywhere near propeller driven airplanes going 500mph is dangerous. Edit: I believe that airshows and air races are very interesting and worthwhile. If this kind of air race crash happened a thousand more times it would kill no one but the pilot. No regulation should change.

Obviously, the pilot was not able to manage the acceleration, and the aircraft was not able to handle the speed. I don't think I am going out on a limb here by assuming the cause of the crash was: -incapacitation of the pilot by massive unexpected acceleration (>10g) after an elevator trim tab (extremely important*) separated from the airplane. This can be shown through the pre-impact photographs of the trim tab missing from elevator, the pre-impact photograph of cockpit with no visible pilot (hunched over, unconscious from acceleration) the tailwheel being extended (I believe there is no 'up lock' on the tailwheel retract system like there is on the mains) as well as the extremely aggressive, visibly out of control pitch up then over maneuver immediately before impact, the lack of mayday call, and the impact point being the only populated area for miles. *the elevator on the stock mustang is fairly standard, with a hinged trim tab and friction lock. this adjusts the pitch-stability point aerodynamically, as opposed to a bungee or spring trim that is on most 'yaw' trim systems. The reason for this is the wide ranges of desirable pitch stability speeds needed in some airplanes, where as the rudder trim range is fairly limited. Because the trim is aerodynamic, it's force requirement, as well as tab deflection setting, changes drastically with different speeds. Easy job for a trim tab on the trailing edge of the elevator. BUT, if the friction lock slips, (or the tab flutters off [in some of the pre-accident pics it looks like the trim tab is partially detached, fluttering violently, then disappears]), the elevator control forces are returned to whatever the neutral trim point is on the plane. In a 400+mph race, this is most likely in a fairly unstable point. Aircraft loaded for stability would have the CG well ahead of the COL, but in a race the CG will be adjusted for most efficiency at speed, so it could be fairly aft (or forward, depending on how [critical] mach interacts with the sub-mach wing, I have no idea)

I cannot tell, are you being serious? -SPACE-

Looks like 10 fatalities now, (sorry, not fatalities, murders)

Who are you talking to here? Not you quade I was addressing the people who PAID to go to see that show and are not "traumatized beyond repair for the audacity of show organizers to allow people to watch"

The public reception of this crash is expected, but that makes it even more annoying. What whuffos should take away from this crash: 1-this crash into spectators is incredibly unlucky. The course is several miles long, 360 degrees around as well as 3 dimensional(as opposed to a race car track). The chances of the Plane hittng the

Uh... I don't think we want to go to Venus... I don't know what the NFPA placards would look like for the surface of Venus... but they wouldn't look good. I agree a LANDING would not be an ideal venture short of "defying gravity" scifi, but the 'plan' was to send some flyboys out there for not much shy of 2 years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manned_Venus_Flyby

True, However I am certain that the "student" passengers of the trikes were given the basic instructions on how to sit, buckle seat belts, don't touch control bar, don't touch this, etc. The FAA is investigating if this is enough to be considered "instruction", or if these trike ride "flight schools" are just giving scenic rides like they are advertising they are doing. All of the advertisements I have seen for tandem skydiving look to me like a theme park ride. (Let me repeat that I have little doubt that anything will change in the way the feds turn a blind eye to a lot of skydiving stuff, but it's nice to remember they are not always watching you)

This article is about weight shift trike crashes during the alleged illegal use of the aircraft for "rides" instead of the only legal commercial use; instruction flights. Just another thought-provoker on tandem factories. in all reality, it's most likely never going to matter for skydiving, but this is an interesting FAA investigation. I know a few Trike pilots that fly out of Dillingham. I have not talked to them in a few years. I wonder. http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/FAANoNewRegsForTrikes_205370-1.html -SPACE-

no no no... dude. I want the one that was released 2 weeks ago and can burn things in space. - 1000mw (1 WATT) 532nm handheld laser. $1,000.00 "...can damage sensors in orbiting satellites" http://www.wickedlasers.com/lasers/S3_Krypton_Series-113-63.html A few aviation web sites are not as impressed. maybe Wicked needs a second chance. http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/laser_wicked_retina_damage_FAA_205338-1.html

I think it might be the opposite. If CCCP had not been so shitty at manned space vehicle development, (but just as ambitious), and "Russia" had not gone through it's regular 30 year re-organization, we would still be in a space race. Saturn V was supposed to take men to VENUS in the 70s, but russia pulled out like a bunch of bitches, so there was no motivation. This Saturn V look alike is just like the 20 other "in development" space vehicles NASA tries to use to stimulate public interest, only to be just down by the next leaders due to "budget cuts".

I have no problem with the full replacement. I buy rubber-sealed wipers, in rocky mountain winter we need the protection from ice lock up. I replace mine once every 6 months or so. (May, then November) the rain-X ones for summer are DAMN good. (~30$/blade)

Four in 10 Americans Believe in Strict Creationism?

And about that percentage in the US as well as on this forum seem to think that the three WTC towers were hit by holograms ten years ago today. (You're all the same on the inside). I call it hopeless. -

I was comparing it to the red bull 2-ship Blanik/jumper stunt. I guess I was too vague. -SPACE- -

No inverted vertical stab high five? (Looked like a ton of fun!) -SPACE- -
Probably a good plan. I still have not, but I am going to go ahead and assume that I am good after 5 years of unprotected ninja coitus. Edit:(same partner, protection worn post cut for the first month and every time there was more than two players)

I asked him if he could make mine "especially irreversible". He did not find it funny.
