If Kerry does happen to win, there will be one positive side effect: tunaplanet will pretty much be a gone-ass from Speaker's Corner. Are you kidding me? With all the things that Kerry would no doubt fuck up to write about?! We'd be entrenched here! My point is that tunaplanet has stated that Kerry will lose so many times and in so many ways in the last few months, that if Kerry does win (God forbid), he's going to be pretty much laughed off the forums. There is no way anyone can factually state that any candidate is going to win or lose an election but according to tuna, it is a fact that Bush will be winning in a landslide. But who knows, maybe he really does have a window into the future. Or maybe it's just a lot of arrogant fluff. Exactly. He won't be laughed off anywhere even if Kerry wins (*shudder*) because there never was any reason for anyone to take his claims to "know" the outcome seriously, and both he and everyone else here have always known it. If I threatened to blow up your mailbox with a tactical nuke tomorrow, and a week later I still hadn't done it, would you laugh at my failure, or realize that I never could have done that in the first place, so it wasn't really much of a failure. Even the laws on assault hinge on whether a threat delivered is credible. If a six-year-old threatens to beat the shit out of a 25-year-old, the police won't believe that an actual assault was committed. (Don't think of the common misconceived definition of assault, it's not a physical thing.) - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

The poster in Mulder's office says volumes about UFO theorists: "I want to believe" (emphasis added) It presupposes a bias toward believing. A more scientific approach would have the poster read, "I'm open to seeing what's out there." That would mean you are objective about whether it's likely "something's out there" or not. - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

You're thinking like a human, and ascribing human interests and thought processes to potential alien sentient beings. Maybe what they're interested in is NOT "intelligent" life forms, but, oh, hydrogen, or crystal, or iron ore...now, why they'd be interested in that I dunno, but it's possible they're not looking for someone to communicate with...just explore, just see, just find out what's out there. I think that's Tom's point, as well as we have NO real idea what something like that would really be like, let alone life span, ability to handle mechanical items, and so forth. That's human judgment about humans, not about aliens. Ciels- Michele So they got here decades ago, and want our resources, but have not been seen conducting operations to remove them from our planet? Is it "thinking like a human" again to fail to realize they might be realllly lethargic and might take eons before they begin to break the earth into chunks for their use? I just think that people, when they believe this stuff is LIKELY, instead of just POSSIBLY, are making a huge, unjustified leap. I remember a great expression I once heard: "When you hear hoofbeats, first think horses, not zebras." It means, don't go suspecting the least likely proposition before you suspect the more likely ones. - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Modest, too I have to be the most modest person you, or anyone you know, will ever meet. In fact, no one even dares challenge my modesty because they know that my modesty kicks the ass of their modesty, hands down. My modesty is superior!! Blue skies, - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" -
Our EARTH is more than billions of years old, bill. I think stars last a bit longer than planets like earth do. My big reason for discounting Tom's hypothesis is that at a time when this race would have detected earth and set out to reach it, mankind would not have been anything near existing yet. Would these creatures have been summoned by dinosaurs? Or by one-celled protozoa? What would have been the draw for creatures that live for billions of years to come here across millions of miles at sub-light speeds, if intelligent civilization was not even around on earth yet? - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Why? I mean, what if they live for billions of years? Slower than light travel wouldn't be a real big impediment to someone with a lifespan like that. No, but maintaining a craft that could do it, while successfully navigating around all the myriad lethal threats that must surely exist throughout space, all the way specifically to come to our tiny little sun and our tiny little planet... that's too hard for me to believe is likely. Do you mean they picked us specifically, all the way from a star that has to be at least millions of years distant at sub-light speeds? And why do you seem to find it not unlikely for creatures to be able to live for billions of years? Do you frequently play the apologist for wildly unlikely premises? This sure sounds like it. - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Bulls%$t, PJ. It's venom pure and simple. At least cop to it. Dude, I opened with this: "I don't wish illness on anyone, and feel it's karmically dangerous even to be glad for Clinton, whom I hate very much, suffering heart disease... " I don't really give a shit how much credibility I have with you. I know what I know, and I don't tend to come here and say one thing while I mean another. I don't feel comfortable wishing medical ills on other people, and so I don't do it. That has nothing to do with the fact that I would not be upset if something I did not will on him took Kerry out of the race and sewed up a win for Bush, so that we'd have 4 more years of relative protection of our gun rights. (In case you haven't been tuned in, that's about the biggest issue I vote on right now.) But if you detect a cynical desire on my part to see someone get sick, you're off base. My mom died of cancer in 2001 and I cannot in my heart wish something even half as bad as that on anyone. Shit, I don't even delight in Janet Reno's Parkinson's disease. Cripes, what is wrong with me?! Now... car accidents I have no problem being happy about. (But not plane crashes. I abhor when something that flies crashes.) - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

True, he doesn't sit well with me. He is not pro-gun. And he sponsored that abomination against the First Amendment that he tried to call "campaign finance reform." He's as much a Republican as Zell Miller is a Democrat. I'm surprised he wasn't a keynote speaker at the dem convention, he's got his nose so far up their asses. - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

So many liberals these days eschew personal responsibility; support suing gun manufacturers for the actions of criminals; support suing fast food companies for purveying "unhealthy" food... I wonder if Clinton is mulling suing McDonald's for making tasty food that clogged his arteries. It would be in keeping with the liberal credo of, "Never take responsibility for anything that you can blame someone else for, and always make excuses for anyone who does something harmful to himself or others -- someone else undoubtedly made them do it." - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

It's a question of do you think Kerry would be robbed of support if he was forced to undergo heart surgery. Most Americans, I figure, don't like the idea of a president being physically infirmed. It undermines confidence, and does not provide for a figurehead of strength. If you want to speculate on how Bush's support would erode under similar circumstances, please feel free to start such a thread. - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

I don't wish illness on anyone, and feel it's karmically dangerous even to be glad for Clinton, whom I hate very much, suffering heart disease... But if I could put John Kerry in his place, I think I'd rather the current threat to liberty and the future of this country, as opposed to the former threat, were forced to go under the knife, if it meant he was that much less likely to be elected president. Do you think that if Kerry had to have coronary bypass surgery, that would erode enough support to make Bush an almost certain win in November? Add your comments as you see fit. Blue skies, - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

You missed what Kalled was saying, Jeffrey. Store up a bunch of diesel and a bunch of ammonia nitrate then wait. One is stable, the other isn't and can, in certain instances, react all on its own. Okay. Is that the danger that Chuck Schumer and his fellow hand-wringing liberals are trying to address via requiring background checks?? Can we stay on point, here?! - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Exactly. There are those of us who are not willing to act as someone we're not, just to get laid. It explains why some of us wait a good long time between girlfriends. Like you said, it comes more easily to guys who find themselves willing to put out whatever "vibe" girls pick up on and want in the short term. But what of substance is left behind after that first fling and an attempt to see if it will all last? Not much. Often, not anything. So I continue to wait for a quality girl to discover the value of the fact that with me, you get an honest, loyal, trustworthy, intelligent, funny, interesting, exciting guy who just doesn't care to show that off like an idiot at every opportunity, just to get some action. Blue skies, - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" -
I think that her secret is she's not keeping her fingers balled into a fist (did I really just say "balled"?) as she puts her whole hand in. I think she's actually extending her fingers down her throat a bit, and suppressing the gag-reflex. Um... not that that's a bad thing... - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Oh my god, I hope you are not expecting Kallend to reply with a concession that you're right. You are gonna be disappointed. He's not even likely to refer in good faith to anything you said. He'll probably introduce George H.W. Bush claiming, "No new taxes!" - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Well, some things GWB has said -have- been white-washed from the White House web site. Try finding -all- of his inaugural addresses for instance. Wasn't Bush inaugurated only once? Shouldn't there be only one "inaugural address"?? I notice that they've taken down all the speeches he gave after things that never happened, like when we developed cold fusion, found intelligent life on Venus, and cured spinal paralysis. I can't find transcripts of the speeches he never gave, for events that never happened, anywhere! - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Well, where is Kallend to tell us that diesel fuel is not flammable? Isn't that the crux of what he was saying to me a few posts ago, trying to make fertilizer seem so dangerous? I guess he's got to do something to defend the latest crusade by his idol, Chuck Schumer... - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

A fresh minty smell...just like the tractor trailer on 610 in Houston today, no flames, no huge fire, nothing the matter except a clean minty feeling. Huh? You're either being serious, or very sarcastic. - -Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"
