  1. (a+b)(a-b) = a^2 -ab +ab -b^2 = a^2 - b^2 My bad. I had not seen that little puzzle in a long time and jumped too quickly. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  2. Absolutely everywhere! Haven't you heard about the "god particle". But my most important point of contact is spiritual, with the goal of spiritual regeneration. That would make the location . . . in your head (or mind). Not a bad thing, but not something "found" as in I found my keys in the flowerpot. More of a self created thing, as in a feeling. Yes, familiar with The God Particle; book by Lederman. Great read. 3. Because it is, in the end, an individual issue? The taxes I pay are pretty significant to me, as an individual. I'm sure they are to other individuals, too. Unless you want to form a group that will take care of my taxes for me? And thereby convert this into a group issue? Covered elsewhere, but worth expounding on. I think it is easy to relate to individuals. and hard to not like most people when you know them personally, or at least are aquainted. Even if you do not like them, chances are slim that you would drop bombs on them so that you could get cheap resources so every family could have 2 cars, 4 TV's, and a jacuzzi. But when people act as a group on another group they can not identify at all, being a glutton regardless of the impact on them is easy. What do we consume? Roughly 20 to 25% of the world's resources IIRC; and we are what? 5% of the population? Does anybody think the rest of the world provides us lots of cheap resources just because they think we are such swell folks? Those on the giving end, take solace in knowing things will change. They always do. 200 years of existence, with only 50 years of domination ain't shit in the long run of even just recorded history. Somebody else will get a turn, and guaranfuckingteed they will walk all over everybody that robs them of their beastly right to be a glutton. 4. That nobody gets much of anything for nothing, or is willing to give up much of anything for nothing. Also that most if not all individuals, and certainly all groups of people large enough to call what we term a nation take advantage of in the least, and abuse as a norm, whatever power they happen to accrue. The standards appear to be self interest and greed; survival remnants in my opinion. Tempered in direct relationships by proximity (as in people are generally nice to neighbors because not to might be bad for survival), but unfurled relentlessly by large groups. There are nice people, lots and lots of them I'm sure; but no group of people has ever come to power that did not unswervingly wield their dominance in blatant disregard for the rights of "other" groups of humans. We relentlessly slaughter each other over this speck of land or that, slavery was only recently abandoned in general but is still practiced in small pockets, women have no or severely reduced rights in many places, etc. We call it our civilized world but under the thin veil of civility it really is still a dog eat dog world. Quite beastly when you think about it. Maybe someday we'll evolve beyond our hoarding, selfish, greedy state of being. In the meantime, KEEP YOUR FUCKING PAWS OFF OF WHAT I'VE WORKED FOR! 5. My take on their statements is that they are not claiming to have helped 3 billion people in one year with their $15 billion annual budget. The logistics of helping half the world's population just do not fit. Maybe they've helped 3 billion different people (many of them multiple times?) over 50 years. At any rate, what other country gives more than the U.S.? And I'm not interested in percentages; people do not deposit (or eat) percentages. It's absolute dollars (or other denominations) and the food it buys that count. Who gives more than the U.S.? 6. Skydive Twin Cities (Baldwin WI) has run an Otter for 15 years on a grass runway (a PAC 750 this year though). Doesn't seem to hurt the grass at all. Stays green all summer. 7. Well, this past weekend there was a load of women in lingerie and men in dresses ... But were they having sex? In plain view of the public? We are Wisconsinites, but not Amish. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  8. Very sound approach. Half the kids in Middle School are already cussing like a truck driver; so no purpose in pretending it's not out there and they never hear it. My daughter finds it awkward that some of the adults they meet think they never hear cursing. Not that gratuitous profanity around kids is my habit; just that the fact is that some people are unable or unwilling to check their language based on present company, regardless of where they are at. As far as the family friendliness of the DZ, or the family friendliness of anyplace, or any attribute of any place; it is determined by the population and their norms. If the local crowd feels it should be no holds barred 24X7 then it will be a completely different feel from a place where people practice some sort of moderation. I like our DZ. Ther bulk of the adult shenanigans happen either away from the common areas or after pre-teen bedtime. Guess we don't have many people that have the need for sex and drugs in public in the middle of the day. But then again, it is Wisconsin. 9. Ah! We need to seek God before we acquire the wisdom to weed out the flotsam shoveled in our direction. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  10. And so we do. If we self deify, we reject God and elevate ourselves. If we humble ourselves and seek God, we easily find Him. ... Where exactly did you find him? Location please. 11. Ask any mathemaetician worth their weight in chalk dust and it is an equals sign; not a congruency, not approximately equals; but equals. .9 repetend 9 does equal 1. Not intuitive to normal thinking, but then a lot of math past Algebra and Geometry isn't. 12. Factoring error. (a+b)(a-b) is not a square minus b square. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  13. Perhaps the world would be better off with governments and behaviors modeled after that used in say Somalia, or Afghanistan, or North Korea, or . . . . Yes, some of the behaviors are not very healthy long-term; and perhaps it is a sad statement on current affairs; but when looking at both sides of the balance sheet, we appear to stack up on the positive side. It would be nice to have a perfect record and not play situational ethics with foreign policy while continuing to give away 10's of billions to other countries. Know any country that has pulled that off? Actually, it sounds really boring from the get go. I'd also add that I don't think I get it, but I don't want to sound dense. 15. I don't know about YOUR nation, but the one I live in isn't dead by any means no matter what the lunatics on the fringes or the talking heads they listen to say. We've survived huge mistakes on both sides of the aisle, we've gone on unnecessary adventures abroad and we've been the victims of our own greed, but we'll get over it just like we have in the past. That calls for a quote from despair.com: "Until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore, you will not know the terror of being forever lost at sea." " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  16. Does anybody know, without doing a lot of research, if the price of alcohol to the consumer was more or less during prohibition? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  17. Sounds like a couple people I know. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  18. Agree heartily. Health care financing, and maybe even health care itself needs to be not-for-profit. But if it goes that way completely, then single-payor is a big mistake. If we engage in not-for-profit AND we eliminate competition, hold on to your hats because then we will see either outrageous jumps in price or intolerable rationing. It is one of the combinations that need to be avoided. Another is guarantee issue and voluntary enrollment. If coverage is available for the asking without regard to existing conditions, then enrollment can not be voluntary. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  19. I think the key is that a certain minimal level ought to be provided - not an everybody-gets-to-go-to-Mayo program. Same with food and shelter. I believe anybody who needs the most basic survival level of asistance can get it if they go to the right place. We are pretty much there already, just not doing it in a very efficient manner. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  20. If I would yet again spend the time to find the studies and opinions of Drs and others, yes, I could give specific answers. you know the studies as to most all here. In the end, in many cases it leads to other drugs for an example. Dont tell that is BS either because I saw MJ destroy my best friend life and carreer until he turned it aroung at age 45. IMO he had the potenial to be one of the best high school and college athletes in his sport. He lost that chance in high school once he smoke the stuff. Me? I lost a best friend and not because of me... Point is, you believe you got it pinned. dont you.... By that logic, alcoholic beverages, guns, pretty much all motorized vehicles, skydiving, downhill skiing (we could leave cross-country alone I suppose), and a whole multitude of other stuff ought to be illegal. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  21. What that other person said about 1st one, next few, and continuing. I considered there to be 3 options - learn to fly, race a car, or skydive. Flying would be cool but the cost of a plane would not be doable until my kids finish college, and by then I'll be 70. Racing at a level I'd find challenging would also be expensive, plus it's a pretty rigid schedule. I do want additional rigidity. Skydiving is relatively cheap, satisfies my need for speed, can be done when I want and am able, and fits my character. I continue because I still get and dig the rush, and even more so enjoy the totally surreal experience of playing in the sky. There is nothing like it that I have ever tried - though I've still not done the pilot thing. 22. Read the original post ... that's the question. If it's being issued it should be right about now, or soon. Or are you asking about D-20000, the one that Bush got as an honorary license? I think that his honorary D was the only D-20000 issued. Ah yes, good catch. I did mean 20000. 23. Both most of the time; only very occasionally am I just a parachutist. People can call me either one and I will not kill them. 24. Could have been. I woke up on monday morning with man-flu and I've felt like I'm dead ever since To stay on topic, is that internally dead, or externally dead?
