  1. How is it possible that an unmarried single person can adopt a child??? In my country, that's simply impossible. Perhaps she went to Wisconsin and married herself. I think you have been misinformed. You can not marry yourself, even in WI. Now if you develop strong feelings about your favorite Hereford - arrangements might be able to be worked out. I read that 10% of people that grew up on a working farm have sodomized a barnyard animal at least once. So if you know 10 peoploe that grew up on a farm with livestock; look around. Chances are one of them was banging the beef. That is my gross, irreverent Heartland Daily Factoid. Red Skelton

I grew up watching him too, mostly because my parents watched him. (I am 54). Hell, everybody seemed to watch him, he was right up there with Lucy and Hope and the other greats of the time. I don't understand the point of someone dragging his memory into a current politically-driven debate. It is completely out of context. For the recotd, this posters favorite skits were Gertrude and Heathcliff. 3. what word do you use? Not gonna bite on that one... Still waiting for you to tell us why so many blacks don't graduate. i thought the answer was obvious - the us of a is a deeply racist country
  4. If they are smart, they will avoid candidates with a goofy and/or extremist slant, such as Palin, Gingrich, Cheney, Paul, etc. They go with somebody like that and even with an Obama backlash (if there is one) they hand him the election. They need an intelligent, non-goofy, centrist; not another cartoonish caricature with 8th grade language skills. 5. And the problem with that is? Gods come and go - always have done, always will. What's so special about your flavour of God anyway? You can keep your Christian heritage (all of it Crusades, Inquisition and all) - just dont push it at me, I'm not interested. Call your holidays what ever you like (so will I) - most were hijacked from earlier ones anyway. If your religion is not strong enough to stand up on it's own 'merits' and so few of it's claims prooven, then too bad. A lot of people are not so easily taken in by mythology anymore. Put up or shut up, I think applies here. Good luck - you may need it. Exactly. The more people have access to information, knowledge, freedom of thought, etc; the less likely they are to buy into the oogie-boogie parts of organized religion. Individual spirituality continues to flourish, but more and more people are seeing organized religion for what it is - just another political power structure. Literal adherence to talking snakes, virgin births, Jewish zombies and all that other hoo-hah can be easily cast aside without taking anything away from the desire or the ability to live a fulfilling life, respect others, be kind, etc. The oogie-boogie parts of organized religion are severely outdated and serve no purpose; other than to motivate those that need a dark ages flavor of motivation. Feeling a kindred spirit to all living things is way cool - and does not in any way require religion as it exists today. 7. This must be a trick question; but let me take a stab. Because they are committing more crimes (per capita)? Tell us what you think the answer is. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  8. Exactly. Kids, in general, emulate the behavior of the adults in their lives. It is most unfortunate that young black men have a much higher chance of emulating criminal behavior. 9. Some hairshirt liberals tried that in MN a few years back; mandating generous benfit packages along with a ridiculously low rate cap (way lower than actual claims cost). When confronted with the impossible arithmetic the insurers werre faced with they (I believe it was a Wellstone led coalition) flat out stated their goal was to put the insurers out of business. Reasonable people prevailed and it died on the vine. 10. For mine too. I love conspiracy theory in the same way I loved X-files. Were you more inclined to root for Scully or Mulder to be correct? 11. Some pretty decent guy way back when walked around and told people how nice it would be if we'd all be decent to each other. Douglas Adams noted that this guy got nailed to a tree for his trouble. Like many others, a power structure rose up around this terrible event in order to manipulate the ignorant (instead of just a bunch of people following the advice to be nice to each other). thousands of years later, they are still exploiting the people oh, and a few other groups said "me too" and started their own brand of exploitation with pretty much the same story and different levels of aggression and intolerance of the other power structures the neat thing is that like 90% of the human race wants to be exploited the other 10% are completely under control of similar religions called political parties - many are under control of combinations of several Very good summation; except you forgot to make room for the portion that takes The Path Of X. 12. Funny how every generation thinks they invented being rebellious; at least until they get old enough to bone up on a little history. 13. Easy solution: Just print up a wheelbarrow of $100 bills for every citizen. What could go wrong? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  14. Last I checked free speech had a relationship between the government and all citizens. The AMA and the Hypcratic oath are administrative.....too bad, so sad. So yes, the government could not prosecute him for hanging that sign, however the AMA or whoever licenses doctors in his state could act. As well, if alib was already being seen by him, that lib entered his office for an ongoing care issue and then he toild that doctor he voted for Obama and hopes for the HC Bill, there is a, "Just add water" conflict of interest that could lead to big lawsuits. I mean, that doc could hardly keep seeing him on a doc-patient basis, so would that doc have to pay for his transfer to another doctor? The doctor is an idiot, I wouldn't want any pro or anti HC Bill BS posted on my docs door....of course this is hypothetical as I'm not in teh class that gets to have the luxury of HC. What do you mean by "transfer"; do they charge a fee to change doctors where you live? 15. If he was worried about what might be found; why would he be calling for release of the information? That doesn't make sense. It is more logical that those that do not want the information released are worried about what might be there. 16. You are using logic to try to shed light on a subject for someone with deeply engrained emotive based paranoid delusions. Rhys needs genuine help; these internet debates just serve as a positive feedback loop for his delusions. 17. That is why my chief complaint in general is that they have not enacted reform; they just extended the mess w/o really addressing root causes. Most of the specifics addressed were already in place in the states that have tried to take action. In not addressing overall cost of care they are sending in a marshmallow to put out a forest fire. 18. Spending almost a trillion to reduce the deficit by 145 million hardly results in a savings. Sounds like the logic my wife uses when shopping. 19. No insurer adds kid in utero. That would be silly. Everywhere that I know of kids are only added after they are born, and to do so w/o health history review requires that they are being added as a dependent to their parent's/guardian's existing contract. The idea is that providing continuous coverage to entire families reduces anti-selection, broadens the pool, and spreads costs. Newborns are high risk, and these parents were doing exactly what insurer try to avoid; selecting out low risk individuals and selecting in for high risk. This is basically another call for guarantee issue/mandatory coverage. One w/o the other simply does not work; or you get all kinds of anti-selection issues/fraud. As far as pre-x; that is an irrelevant term until you have coverage. What this child did not pass was a health history review to obtain coverage to begin with. The rules can be confusing, though it only takes a small amount of reading to gain the necessary understanding; and they are quite logical once you think thru the issues of risk, loss, and selection. An expanded government program is going to be no less confusing than the commercial market. ACTUARIAL JOKE: 2 actuaries go out deer hunting. They spot a buck across a clearing. The first one takes a shot and misses 5 feet to the left. "Rats!" The second one takes a shot and misses 5 feet to the right, and exclaims "We got him!" 20. I added it to my movie queue about a month ago, but the kids keep putting other stuff ahead of it. Have read Fast Food Nation and Why Things Bite Back. And did enjoy Supersize Me a couple weeks back. Anybody here familiar with Baracka, or is it Baraka? 21. Yes, there will always be a place for faith. Even if we figure out why things have mass, or for that matter why matter exists at all, there will still be the "Then what before that?" question. Faith has it's purpose, and that purpose is for accepting what we can not know. Unfortunately, a certain (hopefully shrinking) segment of the population refuses to acknowledge our increasing knowledge. 22. Jumping? "White Men Can't Jump" Did you see the piece on The Daily Show about the whites only basketball league in Atlanta. Absolutely freakin hilarious. Three middle-aged white guys with a typical Bubba build, playing a little half-court against one very talented young black man. No contest. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  23. I think it should be properly named ATOM CRASHER. If I ever achieve superhero status I want to be named ADAM CRASHER. But seriously, too lazy to look; anybody remember the necessary energy level previously theorized to expose the Higgs? Is 7 TeV getting in the ballpark? 24. Doctor’s salaries are not the culprit of exorbitant healthcare costs...many other factors are driving the costs, i.e. frivolous lawsuits and medical malpractice, uninsured people not paying for their treatment, etc. Add to this state mandated coverages and no ablility for companies to compete across state lines They can compete across state lines, and many do. But it is an administrative nightmare, and adds to cost. Having the business regulated at the state level is a remnant from when delivery of care and the financing of it were both very local affairs. Doesn't work anymore though. There is also the little snafu that some states mandate HCF companies to be not-for-profit (IMO a good thing) and some do not. So a lot of the big companies either need to have a NFP division or forego doing business in those states. In that respect, the recent bill is a step in the right direction. It does have many good points, most of which are already in place in many states. But it ignores cost issues entirely, guaranteeing it will be a further economic drain right when we do not need another. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  25. Lucky economics, everyone. Let's go get heart surgery from the guy making 50k instead! I no longer have access to the data, but trust me on this one. There is little correlation between what providers charge (or more accurately, where they are in the range of prices charged) and quality of outcomes. Yes, if you look at the extremes (Mayo on the one end and Bob's Speedy Care on the other) there is a pattern. But for the vast bulk of providers and the care they deliver - price does not correlate to quality of care.
