  1. oh!! I know... http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3765676;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread -- Rob
  2. I was laughing at the contractor dollars I got paid to update some people's systems (using vendor patches) remotely. They couldn't RTFM and paid me insane $$ to do it for them. Of course now, with kids and a wife, I'm wishing I hadn't spent it all... But I sure had fun spending it!! -- Rob
  3. http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=washington+dc+crime+rate+vs+dallas Excuse me . . . you were saying? here... added one word to that search for you http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=washington+dc+violent+crime+rate+vs+dallas I won't speak for others, but my position has always been that guns deter violent crime. the other crimes listed in your URL (larceny, burglary, vehicle theft, property crimes) are committed when there is nobody present (thus the presence of a gun won't deter that crime). So I prefer to compare violent crime rates. After all, I'm not going to use my handgun to prevent someone from stealing my stuff, if I'm not there. Hell, I'd let them have it even if I saw them taking it. It's stuff. I have too much of it as it is. -- Rob
  4. The authorities ask the manufacturer who they sold gun XXXXX to. That FFL then has a file of all the ownership transfers that they access to see who that weapon was sold to. The authorities have access to the data based on the serial number, not the name. -- Rob
  5. Though it could imply that being in a situation where you might be shot dead might make you want to go buy a gun. Mere ownership of that weapon does not make you safer. Just like owning a car doesn't mean you know how to drive it or having a baby means you know how to parent. -- Rob
  6. A prime example of a war where the political desires and military requirements did not match. -- Rob
  7. Nice bit of backpedaling there. you don't have to be a dick about it. He noted that he understood your point and amended his original statement. You've done something rare. Made someone on the internet recognize an opinion different from their own and change their original statement. http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/duty_calls.png -- Rob
  8. so this is interesting. (and in some cases humorous) here's the first link images.google.com found for the following what's doubly interesting with regards to this discussion, is that they all look pretty stereotypical except for the "Muslim" image. (well... ok, the "Cowboy" result isn't very stereotypical either) However, if that search is changed to "Muslim Man" the results become more stereotypical. Muslim Man -- Rob
  9. now there might actually be some reasoning behind that... Orthodox Jews tend to marry and mate with only other Orthodox Jews. This limits their genetic diversity and would tend to make certain features more prominent. They also tend to live in tight-knit communities and have similar behaviors. This also would make them distinguishable in a group. -- Rob
  10. a wonderful story about interaction with the TSA: http://www.pennandteller.com/03/coolstuff/penniphile/roadpennfederalvip.html -- Rob
  11. Says who? When did referring to a foreign national by their nationality become offensive? -- Rob
  12. ick. I quit doing tandems because the place I did tandems only put me on the board for a few a weekend (because I didn't come work EVERY weekend) and I didn't feel I could keep current that way. The alternative was to work every weekend, which would have ruined the sport for me. I'd have done enough tandems frequently enough to feel more comfortable, but wouldn't have had any time to have fun. -- Rob
  13. It's an opinion piece that has some truth (in my experience) in it regarding Japanese and Chinese attitudes towards each other, and Americans. I don't know how big a deal it is, or if it's even the case in this incidence. But some of it is true. -- Rob
  14. Just like the people have won the 4th issues? Or the 8th issues? Altho I don't think there will be a mass collection of firearms, mass registration could be an issue and think of all the firearms that won't be registered and become felonies to the bearers of them. nope. I sold those the other week... cash deal. nope, didn't get the guys name. He had a Dallas address on his license. Smith I think. yeah.. bill smith. that's it. -- Rob
  15. and battery disposal? what happens when you swap them out? Any ideas on how much the replacements cost and how long they last? -- Rob
  16. guns are inanimate objects. -- Rob
  17. I suppose that counts as justice in the heavily CHRISTIAN BIBLE BELT... its the conservative thing to do. depends... is the point of a prison sentence to rehabilitate, deter, or to simply remove from society the convicts. Also then what is the point of the death sentence, to allow for a feeling of retribution or closure, or just to permanently remove them from society. And if by "conservative" you mean not touchy-feely emotional, then ok. -- Rob
  18. I think if you were to dig beyond the surface (which might prevent your glib remarks) you'd see that it's not that they want the government to execute them, but they want them killed. I still say once the death penalty has been handed down by the courts (meaning in some states the jury decided on the sentence), that the family of the victims should be given the option to carry out the sentence, or it reverts to life without parole. -- Rob
  19. how about this as an alternative: if someone was given a death sentence, restrain them in a chair, with a hood so they can't see what's happening to them. Then put a family member of the victim in the same place with their choice of implements of death for the convict. If they can't bring themselves to kill the guy, he gets life without parole instead. -- Rob
  20. depending on the methods used and average sentence before execution, that changes from time to time. 20 years ago when I did a paper on that very topic, it was indeed cheaper to imprison someone for the rest of their lives (based on average age of incarceration and average age of death in prison) as opposed to the appeals and incarceration until execution. However, about 8 years ago, that had changed. The number of appeals had dropped, and the age of initial incarceration had dropped to the point that life imprisonment was more expensive than execution. These were all Texas numbers, not national. -- Rob
  21. You succeeded in getting me my warning. And it was pointed out that calling someone ignorant (no matter the actual state of that persons ignorance) is a PA according to the link at the top of the page. So let me re-phrase myself... I believe you are incorrect as to the intentions and beliefs of the Libertarian party. However I do not believe that you will listen to reason, nor to sensible argument on this matter, so I will not waste my time trying to correct you. If you are interested in my opinion on this matter I'm sure you will be able to contact me privately to discuss this away from this public forum. I don't expect to hear from you soon. -- Rob
  22. well since "ignorant" is specifically called out in the rules, I suppose it qualifies. don't agree with it explicitly, but by continuing to post here I suppose there is implicit agreement. -- Rob
  23. ignorance is lack of knowledge. it is not an insult. It's not as if I called him stupid. He's not stupid, if he was he couldn't put together the arguments that he does (however flawed some may believe they are). I just want to be sure why I'm being warned. because I don't see a PA in my post. Clearly you do, and I want your greenie opinion of what my PA was. -- Rob
  24. wow... you really think that about the L? well it's clear you're not interested in learning anything in these forums, nor changing your viewpoint. So I won't bother to attempt to educate you. Enjoy your ignorance. Enjoy your ignorance Enjoy your Personal Attack. wow... you really think calling someone ignorant is a PA? Yes, in my opinion you are ignorant. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ignorant I chose a common word to describe what I perceive as your lack of knowledge. Rather than show me I'm wrong, you chose to declare a PA. Nice debate skills. Though clearly I struck a nerve. -- Rob
