  1. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by the Antarctic ice sheet, a sheet of ice averaging at least 1.6 km (1.0 mi) thick. The continent has about 90% of the world's ice (and thereby about 70% of the world's fresh water). If all of this ice were melted, sea levels would rise about 60 m (200 ft). 2. Believe me, I don't try. Manifesting tandems ahead, and if needed "bumping fun jumpers up", as opposed to pushing loads down is one thing we do. For the most part, we do a great job with the customers paying $200 a jump, and the "twenty three dollar guys", are on they're own. A small drop zone can be profitable, believe me if my DZ were breaking even I'd have sold out years ago! Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else. AC DZ
  3. 2 HOURS? Wow. What is the reason for this long a wait anyway Exactly what others mentioned. The DZ was really only that backed up through the peak season, and only on Saturdays from 10:00 am till 3:00 pm, and only when it was a really pretty day. So, if I had a second airplane, it would sit 50% of the time on the days when the DZ was really busy, and 90+% of the time over all. I compromised, and spent a bunch of money on the one airplane I have, speeding it up. We went from flying 16 to 18 loads a day, to doing up to 24. Those additional loads are for the most part going to the fun jumpers and progressing students, since our tandem business is limited by the number of instructors (two) on staff. So, still one airplane, one pilot, one to maintain, but considerable more lift capacity. Also, the amount of fun jumper traffic is an eb and flow kind of thing. Right now it seems we have fewer fun jumpers, I blame it on all the carbon in the atmosphere. I'm doing my part though, trying to recycle all the beer and pop cans around the place. It may not help, but it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else. AC DZ
  4. Especially at a Mexican or other "foreign language" restaurant, and apparently because people aren't comfortable with their ability to pronounce Spanish correctly they'll point at the menu so the wait staff can see, and say "I'll have the number two." Maybe it's so the waiter knows which "number 2" they want, just in case the menu has multiple "#2" items. The majority of people do it, just watch next time you're out with a group! Here's a fun one, next time you see someone look at their watch ask them what time it is. They'll always have to look at the watch again. This one though is because we're not generally making a mental note of the time, but rather how much time until something, or since something, etc. Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else. 5. "There's iron in your words." If you're starting from zero in an area that's never had a DZ, or you're going to compete with an established DZ, then you will have do do it all! If you're in an area which has had a DZ close down and there's a vacuum, you'll most likely be able to use existing talent. It'll require a minimum of two years to really grow the staff to run a small one Cessna DZ if starting from zero, probably more like five years. I had a tandem student ask me last weekend what the minimum staff is to run my DZ. That was a first from a tandem student, the answer is three. Got'a have a pilot, and need two multi discipline instructors. For the traffic we do on a typical summer weekend, we need two TIs, one or two IAD Instructors, a Coach or two help but can operate without them, and someone to cover packing the tandem rigs. Fun jumpers and instructional staff assist with the manifest, answering the phone, and getting tandem students going on video and paperwork as they walk in. I like this story and have posted it before. I think it was the first year I owned the DZ, the other TI was looking for me, the airplane was about to land and we had two tandem students going up. He found me in the rest room, tandem rig on my back plunging a load of shit down the toilet. He later told me that this was the point he came to understand what being DZO actually meant. On the other side of that coin, I had a fun jumper upset with me that his load had been bumped up while he was gone to get lunch, he'd missed it, and was again on a two hour wait. He shit on the floor in the rest room and left. I was up at the time, and one of the fun jumpers did the nasty and cleaned up the mess (thanks again Dan!). I have a great bunch of fun jumpers and part time staff! I guess the point is that as DZO you need to be prepaired to deal with the shit, figuratively and literally! 6. I think maybe DZ.com is only for when the porn is loading slow. Something to do while waiting. Well, and it's a real problem to do the porn thing while at work. Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else. AC DZ
  7. I think that the bleeding will stop in 24 hours or so. I was awake for mine, local, and a general but awake, and one was really impacted. They removed two in about 30 seconds each, then worked on the impacted one for 15 minutes, or as it seemed, drilling, chiseling, prying, more drilling, chiseling, prying, etc. About 6 months ago I had an implant done, again with local only. To do that, they drill like half an inch into the bone, and screw the implant in. They gave me Percocet I think, I took maybe a couple of the pills. When I broke my arm rollerskating, the left over pain med was really handy. The doctor asked "do you feel any pain", I said "not much, I took a couple of these." then showed her the bottle. She said "You have that?!" Ironic I think that dental surgeons prescribe pain med like it's nothing. But my MD will tell me to take Ibuprofen for some shit that actually does hurt. 8. Ding ding ding!!! We have a winner. "Looks different", as in shopping, and social networking? Not that women or at least some women are not stimulated by visual, but not like typical guys. It would make my day if a average or better woman walked up to me, opened a trench coat to reveal full frontal nudity. Were I to go out and do that I'd find myself in jail with my face on the internet as a sexual predator! Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else. AC DZ
  9. Sears does price matching, so if you find something else cheaper, just ask Sears to match the price. I'm fairly sure that they'll only match against brick and mortar stores, they'll even pull Lowe's, Home Depot, Target on the internet to confirm pricing if you ask. 10. You live in a village and all you have seen today are white swans, from which you conclude all swans are white. A little rash perhaps, but logical. Now this isn’t yet a convincing theory, so we wander down to the village pond and look for swans. We are not looking for white swans though, we are looking for non-white ones. This assymetry is important, because although more white swans advance our case only a little, a single black swan will kill it stone dead. Because the threat to our theory is so devastating, every time it survives it increases our confidence. If we want to pursuade the world that our theory is correct we want to attack it as often as possible. Ideally we will search high and low for black swans, but fail to find any. We want to test the theory in as many novel ways as possible, and with notoriety others will test it too and they will think differently from us. And so collectively we never prove it, but we do get ever more confident. All the GW "scientists" ever search for are white swans. From what little I know on the issue, these emails, etc seem to indicate that they are not only looking for only white swans, but killing any black swans and burying them as deep as possible. Anyone searching for swans of a color other than white are criticized and ridiculed. GW has nothing to do about global warming or climate change, it's about redistribution of wealth. Follow the money. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/60/Black_Swans.jpg/685px-Black_Swans.jpg Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else. 12. I have the hartzell 82in super simitar on my 182 as well, but it went on with the new Texas Skyways O520U/TS engine. Removed a O470 with 82" Mc prop, I needed the third blade and couldn't go longer two blade. Climb time in cold weather at GTOW is 13 to 14 min (1300 msl to 11,500 msl). Edit to add: we did the engine and prop, flew some in the dead of winter, then installed the ART Wing-X extensions which shaved another 1 to 2 min off the climb at the same weight (from 15 to 13 min). This STC also made me legal to 2950 lbs, as opposed to 2650. Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else. AC DZ
  13. Sure they do. Mirage and Sunrise offer a number of stock combinations with a larger reserve container. Flite Line used to sell Reflexes with reserve containers 3-4 sizes larger, like an R300 for a 150 reserve and 97 main. At one point I talked to Sunrise and they said they'd build a Wings in any combination but "won't promise it'll look good". Jump Shack will build any combination. Sun Path and UPT don't want our money but there are other options. FWIW, I have a PD143 and Samurai 105. I stand corrected. I have seen rigs with what looks like a small main container "stuck" below a large reserve. I also think that people are overly hung up on having the smallest possible rig, and a "easy packing" main. 14. Very nice and much improved. You are not allowed to smile so facial recognition software will more likely make a positive match. Irony is that no software will ever match you because you're walking around grinning all the time. Martin Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else. AC DZ
  15. This isn't only a problem for big guys, anyone who is wants to maintain a conservative reserve loading, with a main loaded up a bit has the container issue. I have a V358 with a PD218 reserve. My main is an Icarus Crossfire 159. It does not slop around in the container, I refer to it as "easy pack'n!" Long-story-short, the manufactures do not build rigs for "mismatched" canopies. My thought on this guy's first main would be to go with a PD Student canopy. It'll be very easy to find a DZ to purchase a slightly used 260 (or 280) student main! And, they fly really nice, turn relatively fast especially considering the loading, and have a powerful flair. I weigh 230 geared up, and was really impressed with how a PD260 student preformed with me under it. Martin Myrtle DZO Air Capital Drop Zone 6'8" 210 lbs (I have to watch my calories to keep the weight there. It's a tandem loading issue.) Edit to add: I weigh in the 230 range geared up with sport gear. I'll buy a used PD 260 Student main, I need another. Prefer the standard color scheme, which is also discounted (maybe just to DZs and Schools), last I knew anyway, check with your dealer. http://www.performancedesigns.com/store_files/colorpic.asp?c_pattern=CP9-0045 Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else. 16. That's too bad. Of all the things skyride does, who the heck cares about stickers? Sounds like a waste of time... Dave As I understand the fine would be $50/day per sticker/sign, and that there are in excess of 500 of them out there. It doesn't take much of a math-a-magician to see $25,000 a day adding up fairly quickly! Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else. AC DZ

  18. Reminded me of the American Graffiti cars, I remembered reading (in the 80s) that a guy in Wichita had owned two of them. A little google work found this: Steve Fitch of Wichita, Kansas bought the Graffiti '55 from Crawford in the late 1970s. Fitch later bought the yellow '32 Ford Coupe driven by Paul LeMat's character "John Milner" in a sealed bid sale from the studio after More American Graffiti was completed. He owned both cars when he and the two most famous cars from American Graffiti were profiled in an October 1983 Car Craft magazine article. Fitch did a meticulous, detailed restoration of the '55 to American Graffiti trim, and is credited with preserving the Coupe in as-is condition from the filming. Now there's some cool shit! He did end up selling them. More: http://kathyschrock.net/graffiti/55.htm Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else. AC DZ

  20. But if you get laid by a reakl chick she will want you to call her the next day. If you get a real sex doll you won't have to call her afterwards or worry about her feelings. A rubber doll can't stalk you, forget to take BC pills etc. Will never get a headach etc Damn this is sounding better the more I think about it.

  23. I started something worthy of a "sticky!" I was not aware of the change to 60 months, and aparrently mistaken that they expire at age 40 if over 24 months old at that point. For some folks, it would ge a good idea to go get a flight physical even if unexpired a few days before your 40th birthday. You wouldn't need to do it again until age 45 (otherwise maybe at 41, 43, and again at 45), if this is correct. Logically if required to be every 24 months at age 40, why would they let you go to age 45? I guess it could be because "logical government" is way to often an oxymoron. It seems that a third issued at 39 years and 29 days of age is good until your 45th birthday. http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/medical_certification/faq/response4/ Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else.
