  1. Hi howard & Hoop, For a great read on those days read AMERICAN CAESAR: Biography of Douglas MacArthur by Manchester. One of the best books I have ever read; and I still have it on my bookshelf. JerryBaumchen
  2. Hi Tower, Going from very old memory here: #1, #2 & #3 are for stowing lines in keeper loops ( i.e, not elastics ). #4 I recognize but cannot remember what it is for. #5 is for pulling the end tab ( which is sewn to the side flap of a chest reserve container ) up and over the cone(s). JerryBaumchen
  3. Hi low, why was he so pissed at the uspa?? *** Think it might have something to do with upndownshop's mother firing him? JerryBaumchen
  4. Neener, neener, neener. The old mind is not as gone as I thought it was. JerryBaumchen
  5. No bank robbery for Ted; a Mom & Pop grocery store but not a bank. BTW, his real, given first name is Teddie. JerryBaumchen PS) I stand by my previous statement that Ted is not DB.
  6. Hi howard, Heck, I just went to the Academy Awards web-site and it lists the film as 1960, produced by Leslie Winik (yes?). Just the facts, ma'am. JerryBaumchen
  7. Hi howard, I would appreciate your keeping me posted on what you find on the dates. As I have said numerous time, my memory is not what it once was. Also, if nominated in '61 would that not mean a release date in '60? At least that is how I think the Academy works. JerryBaumchen PS) I got an old service pal who is a movie nut-type, I'll see what info he can find.
  8. Hi howard, Re: A Sport is Born was filmed between July 12 and 20, 1960 Are you sure about these dates? If my memory serves me correctly ( and it does not do so well these days ), I recall seeing the movie when I was in Basic Training which began 26 Dec 59 and went to about mid-March 1960. I have a memory of seeing the film at a theater on Lackland AFB. Just wondering, JerryBaumchen PS) If your dates are correct, then I would have to have seen it at Edwards AFB and I have no memory of that.
  9. Hey Zing, Your site has some nice photos. I've been out of Ramblin' Rose. I heard Spiva died earlier this year; he was still living down in southern Oregon somewhere. I also was on the first DC-3 load ever to fly out of Sheridan. Douris was the pilot. During the briefing he said that we had to understand that once we started rolling, there was no room to stop, we were going to go no matter what we had. That got a lot folks to think for a moment. 10. Hi Sailmo, I just got an email & that photo from Charlie and sent him back the info on Ray. Ray Lowe is third from right in that photo. JerryBaumchen PS) I mentioned that he tweaked his knee just before getting out. He still gets a disability check from the VA every month. And he continued to sport jump for a year or so after he got out; go figure.
  11. Hi jon, Nope, from Astoria, Oregon via Oregon State University skydivers. He now is once again living in Astoria, OR. Sorry JerryBaumchen PS) His brother is Gary Lowe, a real 'Richard Cranium' if I ever met one.
  12. Hi david, The old friend of mine is Ray Lowe. He got drafted sometime in 1969 and since he had a college degree ended up in Germany as some type of clerk in an Orderly Room. I saw a notice in PARACHUTIST that the 7th APT was looking for people who had a D license & wrote to him. He got on the team I 'think' sometime about mid-1970. He tweaked a knee and had to stand down for about the last three months of his hitch; he got out sometime in '71. JerryBaumchen
  13. Hi howard, Back in '67 I decided I wanted to get in touch with Luis about a camera mount. So I call INFORMATION and get a phone number. I give a call and some guy named Luis Melendez answers, but he is some old guy and says he gets a lot of calls for this 'skyjumper' guy. Cameron finally put me onto him. JerryBaumchen
  14. Hi phil, I'm not from that part of the world, so no-go on recognition. However, in the photo 'kevin' that SST needs the reserve pilot chute loops shortened. JerryBaumchen
  15. Hi Zig & Mark, Yup, it is T-12 w/red thread. I told you I was too lazy to go look. And I should never trust my memory. JerryBaumchen
  16. Hi Zig, You are correct, different color is used on different types of webbing; i.e., I think Type 8 is red but I am too lazy to go get some out. JerryBaumchen
  17. Hi SyN1c4L, Drop me an email at: jerrybaumchen (at) verizon (dot) net I have an old friend from the 7th APT who now lives in Astoria, Oregon. JerryBaumchen
  18. Hi Guys, That yellow thread is not a binding thread or a structural thread. It is a tracer thread and it is there to tell the weavers that all is well in the weaving process. If the yellow moves to some other location in the webbing it tells them that all is not well and to stop and make corrections with the weaving machine. JerryBaumchen
  19. Hi Twin, Do a search for PEEK, he posts here and has done a very good article on sliders / hard openings. JerryBaumchen
  20. Hi howard, After Kari came out west & jumping at Issaquah, he built a rig for himself; very different kind of thing. He then went to get it FAA-approved under some type of EXPERIMENTAL category. We used to spend a lot of time discussing rig design. I thought that was him but you know how it is getting old . . . JerryBaumchen
  21. Hi quade, I'm glad you put the 'smiley' there. Having lived and worked in the metric system (the proper term is SI), I find that those who bash it are those who know nothing about it. They just hate change. When Australia went to the SI system they had two years to completely eliminate the old English system. It can be done easily, successfully and at very little cost. JerryBaumchen PS) Yes, I am a very strong proponent of the SI system.
  22. It's a REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT cockpit. Heck, anyone knows that. JerryBaumchen
  23. Hi piper17 & lekstrom, If I remember correctly, the guy who was sitting in the plane and was hit by the prop was the guy who sued. I do not recall the 'jumper' sueing anyone. JerryBaumchen
  24. Hi peckerhead, You ask a lot. Being the complete computer guru that I am I have to have my daughter do all of this stuff for me. Maybe in a month or so when I can get her to help. JerryBaumchen PS) The interesting part is, if you look, that after 3 months and being on the dz at least one day of every weekend for those 3 months I had the grand sum of 4 jumps. Times have changed.
  25. Hi Jim, Wasn't that the one where one of the jumpers just jumped out, thinking she going over, and into a cornfield? As I recall he was only really bruised a bunch. Jerry Baumchen
