First BASE jump from World Trade Center
JerryBaumchen replied to Guru312's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hi Nick, I seem to remember some guy who jumped out of a plane, landed on the WTC and then jumped from it with his reserve. Does that one mean anything to you? JerryBaumchen -
I hope I'm making the right decision
JerryBaumchen replied to ladyhawke's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hi hawke, Just for some info; about 12-13 yrs ago I had RWS (now UPT) put a new, larger main container on a Vector Tandem rig. It cost me about $150 back then; can't say what it would be now. When I got it back, you could not tell that it was not built that way originally and it REALLY looked great. I would strongly suggest that you contact them. Bill does his best to make customers happy (within reason, of course ). JerryBaumchen -
Jumping a Wings at more than 254lbs?
JerryBaumchen replied to SEREJumper's topic in Gear and Rigging
Hi ryoder, That chart is simply wrong. There are no placard requirements, as to weight and/or strength, on any component TSO'd under C23b. In fact, you do not have to placard/state/label or anything else ( except for the 'normal' marking req'ments ) when mfg under TSO C23b in the Standard category. Placarding/labeling, with certain info, is req'd if under the Low Speed category in TSO C23b. Hope that this helps, JerryBaumchen PS) Only TSO C23c has the upper weight limitations, TSO C23d has no maximum weight limitations. One could test and get the TSO approval for 10,000 lbs if one wanted to. -
Hi sky, I made my own canopy once. I just took it out to the dz and jumped it. Of course, I had a bunch of reserve rides until I 'learned' how to pack it. If you are really wanting to do it, then I strongly recommend you give it a try. You might want to buy just a small amount of fabric and make a 1-cell canopy before you spend a lot of money on materials. Once you have completed the 1-cell project you might decide that you do not want to do an entire canopy. Oh, and the manufacturing standards are what you call them. Have fun, I did, JerryBaumchen

Regarding ParaCommanders (PC's)
JerryBaumchen replied to Usetawuz's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia

American military folks, a question, if you please
JerryBaumchen replied to shropshire's topic in The Bonfire
Hi shrop, I was in the US military back in the late '50's / early '60's and when I got sent to France we called it clicks. It is just a slang term, same as flick for the cinema; I never used the term flick until after I got into the military. Now, I want to know about this term WANKER????? JerryBaumchen -

Hi poe, Remember this: You were looking for a job when you found the one you have. Might want to try looking again, JerryBaumchen

Hi howard, Well, that is probably before they went to the keyhole pattern; that is a typical diamond pattern; very popular back then. The 'keyhole' pattern was that the entire canopy was black except for the very top panels ( all around the canopy ) were gold and then the entire rear gores ( where the mod would be at ), in their case 7 gores, were also all gold. If you were to look at it from the bottom or jumper viewpoint, the gold looked like a keyhole; as in very old-timey keyhole. JerryBaumchen

Hi drjump, No, Security's Lo-Po canopies were made of a 1.1 oz. fabric. Howard, I do not think that is a Golden Knight's canopy because theirs were black with a gold 'keyhole.' Do you remember what the keyhole descriptor was for? JerryBaumchen

Hi mama, I remember reading a column by the late Herb Caen, who wrote for one of the San Franciso newspapers, and he was wondering just what QQQQ on a plate meant. One other bit of trivia, here in Oregon the state can stop what you want to put on the plates. This went all the way to the State Supreme Court and the robes ruled that the plates do belong to the DMV. JerryBaumchen Also known as JUS TSN

What is a pizza puke ParaCommander?
JerryBaumchen replied to pchapman's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hi Peter, You should understand that the 'pizza puke' was not any 'official' designation by Pioneer; jumpers came up with the descriptor. However, that one is not a 'pizza puke' canopy. The 'puke' had a lot more colors in it. You did not want to own one. JerryBaumchen -
Hi Terry, As others have said, 1.6 Lo-Po's. I am not sure what you mean by 'wierd' skirt. When we modified cheapo's, we usually cut them right to the skirt; whereas Pioneer usually left about 12" of fabric right at the skirt. They were available from Pioneer with mods or you could order them uncut and mod them yourself. That tan color does not look correct in the first photo as I do not remember any 'tan' color. It might be white or the yellow from the 2nd photo. You were some hot-sh*t jumper if you had a 1.6. JerryBaumchen

Hi John, As I mentioned in the email, this is the article that I wrote for PARACHUTIST back in ~'71 on my jumpsuit. Howard White, who posts here somewhat, still has a copy of the magazine that the article appeared in. Contact him if you might want to read about my travails. JerryBaumchen

Hi Strato, Now that Pioneer link was interesting. Seems odd, at least to me, that they are still making the Mk. I, however I did notice that it is now made out of 2.0 oz ripstop. Anyone for going down Memory Lane???? JerryBaumchen

How long have your parents been married?
JerryBaumchen replied to SkydiveStMarys's topic in The Bonfire
Hi StMarys, Interesting question; my Mom & Step-Dad were married for 52 yrs, he died back in '97 at 89 y/o. Now for the other side of that inquiry: My Father (the biological one) was married 14 times, to 11 women; yup, married three of them twice. WHAT A MAN!!!!! JerryBaumchen -
Hi Gary, I cannot speak (type?) for anyone else but when I make reference to a domed slider I am meaning a domed slider that when it is a finished product the grommets are at the same spacing as the original slider. Now given that, I have read some of the stuff that you have posted here and it would seem that the most effective single change to slow down an opening is to increase the slider size in the front-to-back dimension only. Yes? No? Other? JerryBaumchen
