Hi tdog, This post is not addressed at you; yours is just the last post that I see here at this moment. I wish we could keep this discussion on point and quit mixing in regs/ideas/experience with certificated canopies. The thread line is: FAA: Altering Main Canopies Personally, I wish that the PIA would petition the FAA to quit trying to impose ANYTHING regarding non-certificated parts. On one hand the FAA 'seems' to be saying 'We will regulate main canopies.' ( ) but they say nothing about the main bag, the main risers, etc. Does anyone else see the absurdity in this? JerryBaumchen

Hi Roger, And Booth's SkyHook licensing agreement requires five jumps with an intention bag-lock. JerryBaumchen

Hi Safe, Nope, a 26 ft Navy conical was designed as a high-speed canopy for Navy pilots. They were/are heavily re-inforced. We used to remove a lot of the re-inforcing when we used them for reserves in our sport rigs. JerryBaumchen -

Hey skyjack, Because no one here is paying any attention to you. Get it? Go away with your idiocy. JerryBaumchen -
Hi ryoder, Tom Classen, a friend back in those days, was in the Loadstar and was ultimately thrown out of it. He told me that when she stalled the tail went down/nose went up. Then she rolled clockwise ( if you were to be looking up from the ground ) around this vertical axis, onto her back. At that point, she was upside-down, then the pilots tried to bring her around but did not have enough altitude and she went in nose first. Just what I was told, and the difference maybe in just how one person describes things vs someone else. JerryBaumchen

Hi riggerpaul, First, there is no such thing as a Major Change in this industry. Everything is done as a Minor Change. If not, you have to go through the entire TSO test program again; and to the latest version of the TSO. I 'think' that probably Sunpath had determined that it is not a modification. And I accept that this is theirs to determine, not you or I. To me, this is the real grey area. If two mfrs say that it is not a change and no documentation submitted to the FAA; they why cannot some rigger ( or his wife/gf/etc ) add the SkyHook???? Think this will get some comments? Hi walt, D J Associates in Ft. Smith, Arkansas; the best company I have ever purchased from. Use Google and you'll find them, JerryBaumchen

Hi mark, I try my best to stay out of interest arguments. I absolutely agree with this position. I have been a licensed rigger for over 42 yrs and I have always advocated that ANYONE should be allowed to work/maintain/alter any piece of equipment that is not manufactured under a TSO-authorization. There are no standards for the manufacture so how can one impose a standard on the work/maintenance/alteration of the device. Just my old opinion, JerryBaumchen PS) I worked for the federal gov't for 30 yrs in Contract Management. Our legal dep't always told us that only the feds get to interpret the federal regs/standards/documents. The courts of this nation have reinforced that for over 200 yrs.

It has been that description for me since early '64 when I made my first jump. And I have seen at least one ParaCommander do it. Streamered to about a grand then opened; he had his thumbs in the shot'n'halfs when she took air. JerryBaumchen

Hi ChrisL, Well, we put dogs & monkeys in space without asking them what they thought about it. JerryBaumchen -
Hi riggerpaul, This reply is NOT to cast any aspersions on you. Last year, in Reno, Bill Booth stated that he did not submit any documentation regarding the SkyHook to the FAA as a Minor Change. Also, when I asked Derek Thomas ( also, last year in Reno ) about whether he had submitted the SkyHook as a Minor Change ( I had noticed that they had added an inner top reserve flap to the Javelin where there had not been one prior ) and he said that they added the flap as a Minor Change saying something about it being there to 'control' the reserve bridle. People seem to continue to think that the SkyHook is part of the TSO'd rig; and I do not believe that it is. This is just to, hopefully, clarify this. Now, if I am wrong, I will gladly admit it. The above is based upon two face-to-face conversations that I had in Reno. JerryBaumchen

1st Jump of the year...Para-Plane
JerryBaumchen replied to Beatnik's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hi S1, Wasn't Shapansky the first person to jump one at the Nationals? I do not remember what year, though. If I 'remember' correctly, he had been jumping an original Para-Plane ( later to be known as the Baby-Plane ) and went to Snyder and told him that it was too small. Thus, Snyder built the Para-Plane Silver Cloud that Shapansky jumped at the Nationals. Your photo looks like a Silver Cloud; later to be known as the Delta Cloud. JerryBaumchen -
Back when I was a worker-type I used to have this on the wall of my office: THE HUMAN SPIRIT IS BEST DEFINED AS THE OPTIMISIM OF A SECOND MARRIAGE RATHER THAN THE PESSIMISM OF A FAILED FIRST MARRIAGE. JerryBaumchen

Hi Michael, I'm going to take this as a serious inquiry. I met my one & only wife at a skydiver New Year's Eve party. Took us 24 years & two kids to finally find out that we really weren't meant for each other. But sometime it works out.

Anyone recongize these old Idaho jumpers?
JerryBaumchen replied to steve1's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hi Jeff, No 'thinking' about it; I Caught up with Rozzo out at the dz in Jean, NV a good many years ago (his last day of owning the dz) and we spent a full afternoon kicking the old days around. It was his Beech and crazy Joe did her in. JerryBaumchen -
Hi slot, Well, since I are one; the great thing is that ME's enjoy a, historically, very low unemployment rate. That means he will be able to support you in your old age. JerryBaumchen

It reminds me of two true stories. Art Linkletter (who most of you are too young to remember) used to have a daytime tv show called HOUSE PARTY and every now and then he would have little kiddies on the show. One day he was talking with this little kiddie and he asked him who was the better driver, Dad or Mom. And the little kiddie said he really didn't know but whenever they were out riding with Mom they never saw any of those fucking bastards. And then one show during the Korean War he asked the little kiddie what his Daddy did. The little kiddie said that his Daddy was a pilot in Korea. So Art asks him if this meant that he got to sleep with his mother. He said, Yes except for Tuesday nights when Uncle Charlie slept with her. JerryBaumchen

JerryBaumchen replied to grannyinthesky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hi Granny, There are no dzs in eastern Oregon but there is one in central Oregon: Central Oregon SkySports (or something like that) located on the airport in Madras, Oregon. It is ran by Bob Daughs; and mention my name when you get there. He is old friend of well over 30 yrs; and a helluva nice guy. JerryBaumchen -

D B Cooper Unsolved Skyjacking
JerryBaumchen replied to skyjack71's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hi low, First, I try to not offer 'what I think' on the internet. I do try (at least I think that I try) to only offer what I know or very strongly believe in. I have absolutely no idea who did it; before or after reading all of this BS. I am convinced that Mayfield did not do it. Why? Because he (IMO) does not fit the sketch, he really is not that bright of a person (could not rob a Mon'n'Pop grocery store & get away with it), and has never had that much money to his name. Oh, did I mention that I have known him since 1964? As I have mentioned before, not too long after the skyjacking, the FBI interviewed me at work for about an hour or so. I came away from that interview with one conclusion; the FBI had NO IDEA who did it. I think that conclusion is still valid. I consider all of this to be a real waste of time; unless one is in it for the fun & games. JerryBaumchen -

I think you 'heard' wrong. In 1972 Ted LEASED the then abandoned airport at Sheridan, OR for his dz business. It was some time in the late '80's that he entered into a sales contract with the owner. He was not able to continue to make the req'd payments and the property reverted back to the seller. JerryBaumchen
