Hi miller, Well, I have seen guys welding here in the USA by only holding up their hand to protect their eyes. And in Brazil I have seen guys caring ladels of molten aluminum wearing only thongs ( the kind you wear on your feet into the shower, not what the women wore at the beach ). JerryBaumchen

Hi mama, I voted OTHER. I think each of us defines it uniquely. For me it was at ~ 200 jumps & when I got my D license. At that point, all of the earlier anxiety had gone away. I usually slept about 1/2 the trip to altitude; ~ about 2500 feet before we would get to altitude, my inner clock would go off and I would start getting ready (get helmet on, check altimeters with others on the load, door going up ); sometimes ( often ) I would be the one spotting. It was just as if this was another thing to do, sort of like putting on my pants in the morning; just another normal thing to do. I can really remember this time very well, it was if I had crossed a threshold and would never go back. But that was just me, JerryBaumchen

Volleyball; took my first class in '65. I still play twice a week. I cannot jump as high or hit as hard as I used to; but I can still make the young ones earn their points. JerryBaumchen

Once when Scotty Hamilton was the Pres. of USPA, he was asked who was the nicest person in skydiving that he had ever met: He said Lowell. And if you ever had the opportunity to meet Lowell you would know why. My very best to his family, JerryBaumchen

About 1967 at the US Nationals, someone 'made' up a chest pack that they sealed with small wire rope. Dan Poynter was doing the gear checks and he caught it. After all, he is Dan Poynter. JerryBaumchen

1st malfunction--probably due to hard inserts in pillows
JerryBaumchen replied to robconway's topic in Safety and Training
Hi bill, The story of that photo is in comparing the ripcords of the guy at the far left ( yellow pud ) to the lowest guy ( metal handle ). Guess which one is in place? JerryBaumchen -
Hi stuw, What is it you do not understand? The drawing seems to be clear to me. Send me an email and I'll try to help, JerryBaumchen

What is this canopy release? #2
JerryBaumchen replied to howardwhite's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hi howard, Looks like the answer has been determined. Now a question: Did he not also develop one called an 'R-4' (???) that used a single handle & cabling like the 3-ring system? I seem to have some memory of something like that. JerryBaumchen -

Hi Air, Most freefall photos that I have seen show the soft handles flopping to the outside. That is why I do not like them. JerryBaumchen -
Ralph did a lot of photography work at the old Lancaster dz. Mjosparky has posted a number of his photos on this website of Ken Rounds unpacking over Lancaster. Ralph also shot the 3-photo series of Ken unpacking a chest pack at terminal that appeared in Skydiver magazine in the summer of '64. Quite a number of years ago Ralph donated all of his skydiving photos to USPA for their museum. JerryBaumchen

Hi howard, They first appeared in Spring '64 on the CrossBow rig. OK, give me another point. JerryBaumchen
-
Hi howard, Note they both have their main ripcords just dangling. Probably had ripcord stops on them. JerryBaumchen

Hi dum, cross bow was introduced in 1964 or 1965. it is what was referred to as a life raft handle. i dont think i have seen them on anything but the pioneer rig back then*** They are used on a Strong tandem rig; L/H outside mounted reserve handle if I 'remember' correctly. JerryBaumchen

Anybody live in Portland, Klamath Falls or Ashland, Oregon?
JerryBaumchen replied to skybytch's topic in The Bonfire
Hi Lisa, I live in a suburb of PDX; shoot me an email and let's see what can be accomodated. JerryBaumchen -
Hi howard, Wasn't he the guy who jumped into the hot-air baloon just as it was lifting off for a cross-Atlantic flight? Not quite in the flight-plan, as I recall. JerryBaumchen

Hi sky, Well, given that, it might be Daryl Henry since that canopy photo is of a 1.6; I think Chuck Embury came along after 1.6's were well into history. Daryl now lives in Santa Barbara and Chuck died last year. JerryBaumchen

Hi howard, I've been to two of them and would call them an 'unusual' get together. However, for those interested, Jim Arender ( The USA's first World Champion ) was at both of them that I was at. I do not know if he will make this one. JerryBaumchen PS) However, is anyone is looking for VERY low D-license signatures for their logbook(s), that would be an event to show up at.

Hi jimmy & Hoop, The first piggyback, the Security CrossBow, came on the market in the Spring of '64. It had the 3-pin main container; they converted the main container to a diagonal 2-pin in about '66. That rig with the 'Camels' in his hand is a Pioneer Para-Twin; the give-away is the ripcords. The Army Team got theirs in about '65 ( I believe that they had them for the Army-Marine Corp jump-off at Elsinore in '65 ). The Para-Twin came on the retail market in about '66 or so. That would make it not Arender; as I 'think' he was out of jumping by then. Now who it is? I have no idea. JerryBaumchen

Hi 377, I think a V-9 is 450 cu in or 500 cu in reserve tray; I cannot see why a CYPRES would not fit. Also, are you sure on the Raven 2 and not a Raven 3? I would think that a Raven 2 would be very loose in there. Just a thought, JerryBaumchen

Hi Bones, Yes, that is him. Gary Olson, better known as Elevator or Otis ( as the name of an elevator company ) because he went up & down; with a plane is what I mean. JerryBaumchen PS) I once watched him buzz the Sheridan dz at about 100 ft, pullup & do a barrel-roll in his 180. Veeerrryyy impressive watching it that close.

Hi Rob, Excellent, I can only hope people read, understand and follow this one. I think you mean ball & shank. JerryBaumchen

How many riggers still pack round reserves
JerryBaumchen replied to riggerrob's topic in Gear and Rigging
Hi Andy, Put me down for that, only change it to twice, JerryBaumchen -
Hi Zing, It's been a couple of years ( ~2 ) since I have seen Elevator but he was still in very good health then; lots of laughing and joking around, typical Elevator. He ran an aircraft maintenance shop on the MacMinnville airport for a lot of years. He got divorced about 2 yrs ago, sold everything and is now flying cargo in the Phillipines. JerryBaumchen
